Especially during the season (from about April to July annually), mangoes are one of the most popular fruits in Thailand - Bangkok is sometimes known as the Big Mango. When it’s mango season, you’ll find mangoes all over Bangkok, and you’ll discover lots and lots of both street food carts and stalls at local markets that serve mango sticky rice. It’s not only one of the most famou Thai desserts outside of Thailand, but it’s also one of the most popular desserts in Thailand - during mango season.
In this video recipe, you’re going to learn how to make an authentic Bangkok street food style of mango sticky rice. When you show up to a food party or a family gathering with a big pan of coconut milk sticky rice and a few kilos of juicy ripe yellow mangoes, you’re going to be the star of the party!
Here are the ingredients you'll need for this recipe:
For the sticky rice:
1 kg. Thai sticky rice (ข้าวเหนียว)
800 ml. coconut cream (หัวกะทิ)
150 g. sugar (น้ำตาลทราย)
1 tsp. salt (เกลือ)
For the toppings:
200 ml. coconut cream (หัวกะทิ)
1/3 tsp. salt (เกลือ)
Sweet yellow mangoes (มะม่วงนำ้ดอกไม้)
100 g. yellow mung beans (ถั่วเหลือง) - optional
Make sure you watch this entire video for all the steps and methods of making this mango sticky rice, and also be sure to go to the full blog post for more details (www.eatingthaifood.com/2016/04.... But overall, it’s a very easy recipe to make. You first need to rinse and soak the rice, to remove all of the starch from the sticky rice. This will make it cook and look better when it’s served. Once you’ve soaked the rice for 6 hours, steam it for about 15 minutes, and then set aside. To prepare the coconut cream, cook 800 ml with sugar and salt, stirring gently until the sugar is fully dissolved, and the coconut cream comes to a boil - then immediately remove and start to assemble the rice. Put the fresh sticky rice into a mixing bowl, and start adding in, slowly by slowly, the coconut cream. Mix it in, until you’ve finished all the coconut cream into the rice, and you should have a consistency that’s kind of like a grain filled pudding. The sticky rice is now ready.
For the toppings, you’ll need to take the remaining coconut cream, cook it on low heat with salt, bring to a boil, and then set it aside for a topping. Lastly, dry fry the mung beans on a low heat to toast them and make them crispy for another common topping (this is optional for this recipe but common in Thailand).
The last part of making Thai mango sticky rice is to assemble everything together. Put a portion of the sweet sticky rice on a plate, peel and slice a mango to go right on top, sprinkle with a handful of crispy mung beans, and serve with the extra coconut cream on top. That’s all for this recipe, it’s pretty easy to make, and it’s one of the most common and most loved Thai desserts!

I'm from Puerto Rico and we love rice with coconut and cinnamon and we love fresh mangoes!! This recipe I will most definately try!!!
Arroz con dulces mmmmmm 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
We are in Thailand for Christmas. My goal is to have mango sticky rice every day. So far so good. Today I ordered mango sticky rice at terminal 21 Pattaya. They also put toasted Black and Tan sesame seeds on theirs. The combo with the crispy mung beans was just delightful!
My wife is from Thailand and I also knows how to cook. For the coconut milk toppings for the mango sticky rice, we will thicken the coconut milk by adding with corn starch mix with a little water to improve the shinning texture of the coconut cream.
for another sticky rice fragrant, you can also add in pandan leaf juice to the sticky rice before steaming to make it more fragrant. .
THANK YOU!!!!🙏🙏🙏
Thank you sir
I thought the same thing.
I thought about corn starch to thicken the gravy on top of mango but wasn’t sure. Thank you for sharing.

In the Philippines we have a similar mango sticky rice except for the mung beans. We cook it in pandan leaves or lemon grass and coconut milk. It's called puto maya but it's eaten often with mango as breakfast food. You can sprinkle brown sugar as toppings. The entire cooking process is a bit different but the concept is the same. It's been a decade since I had one of those.
+avarice seven i like the puto maya w/ muscovado and grated coconut on top its like eating palitaw w/o the sesame seed
avarice seven im from philippines but i never try that puto maya .. maybe cause i grew up in cavite and laguna .. but the taste of sticky rice w. mango its so familiar to me and your right the procedure is just different :)
In indonesia, we have sticky rice with durian gravy (durian flesh cooked with brown sugar n coconut milk) and sprinkled grated tender coconut flesh on the top, yummm
LOL! He's so excited! His giggle is hilarious!
Im making this tomorrow because of you! Love your personality and technique!

TNP CMF it's the eyes.he has deep set eyes like mine. People always mistakenly think too that I'm tired or lack sleep. I just hv naturally deep set eyes nd under eye circles even if I sleep for 15 hours.lol
Found this video of yours and have been a fan since. Keep doing what you love!
5:17 - I can't believe that coconut cream with sugar and salt would taste like this! Mind. Blown.

I am for sure making this tomorrow, would love to see more Thai dishes Mark
Thank you so much! I just made this recipe for my daughter. It's delicious and the advice to stir the coconut cream/sugar mixture slowly into the steamed rice made the texture perfect! 👍🏼 Love all your shows. 😀
That looks delicious Mark,I'm going to try it.
Know I can't get the same mango here in the state
But i we'll definitely make this.thank you
Take care.
Wow, this man's recipe literally made my mouth water the whole time in this video. It looks so very delicious. The best sticky rice dessert recipe. Yes, in this video, he used sugar. In another video, there was no sugar nowhere. This is the best sticky rice video that I watched. Great job. Thank you. One last thing but very important. I would not eat sticky rice dessert with mango for sure. I would eat it with avocado. That is how I first ate sticky rice in a thai restaurant and that is how I am used to eating and I like. And frankly, mango doesn't go well with this dessert at all. Avocado goes very well. Mmm, delicious.
wow the color size and the form of that mango very enticing...
Watching your videos for years and I love the food you eat
+adam beydoun Thank you Adam!
amazing! My fav thai dish! i eat this everyday when i was in Thailand!Miss it!!
