      @Matt Beardsworth I've never heard or seen Tommy Svensson, the swedish manager then, say anything like that about the referee. He did think the red card for Thern was too harsh (together with every other swede in the world), but he hasn't claimed he was biased.

      guidc, I remember, Sweden was a very tough team to play against. Tall and very well structured defensively. Keneth Anderson, Larson and others were a nightmare to deal with.
      Fortunately, we had Romario which for me was the best player I have ever seen play inside the "area". That " little"man carried the ofensive load for Brazil in many games and with Taffarel was the main REASON why I saw Brazil winning that world cup in 1994. Great memories.

    I think Sweden was great in this USA 94 World Cup. As they said, they were the top scoring in the tournament. Kennet Andersson made 5 goals, as Romario who was the king of this World Cup. But Salenko and Stoichkov were the top scorers with 6 goals each. And they brilliantly finished it with the 3rd place. I think this was their best result since 1958 Sweden World Cup, isn´t? Long live to the Vikings!

    • @okyouknowwhatever
      @okyouknowwhatever Před 3 lety +6

      Salenko's goal scoring title is a bit phony since he scored 5 of the goals against a relatively mediocre opponent (Cameroon) in a game that meant absolutely nothing (both teams were already out). Kennet Andersson was twice the player Salenko was in the 1994 World Cup.

    • @danyoutube7491
      @danyoutube7491 Před 4 lety +8

      I don't think it was meant to be an insult to the Saudi team so much as to emphasise how big an issue the heat was. 40 degrees centigrade is not something most northern Europeans ever experience, let alone contemplate exerting themselves in. There was a lot of concern over the heat expressed by many sides during that world cup. I like to see football played in bright sunshine though, and USA 94 remains my favourite world cup (perhaps largely because I was turning 13 and it was the first world cup I really paid attention to).

    I've been watching world cups since 1986 and I must say that of the other than usual semi-finalists in World Cups since then, I'd have to say this team has been the most impressive. Why? Mainly because of what this guys said about the heat in Dallas. Sweden is a Nordic country and these guys were not used to our American summers yet they had a fantastic world cup scoring all them goals and finishing in 3rd place. They are in the quarter finals now and are scheduled to play England. Lycka till Sverige!

    Fair play to Sweden. They deserved their 3rd place. For me the most frustrating game in the whole tournament was the match for the 3rd place and I was mad on our players. But being at age of 10 and following a world cup championship for a first (and last) time, I couldn't realize the great achievement of our team. A country that had never won a single game in a world cup so far, Bulgaria suddenly reached a semi-final by eliminating the world champion Germany. Sadly the loss from Italy with the decisive intervention of the referee, obviously broke the spirit of our team and the Swedes had no problem to defeat us.

    This is the world cup that is the closest to my heart. I remember that scorching summer so vividly, being out playing football every day between games and tuning in to every Sweden match and seeing the magic of that team's run through the cup. Brazil was a beast, Italy too were very feared, but you had exciting "wildcard" teams beyond those as well; Romania, Bulgaria, Nigeria, Cameroon..the list goes on and I think it's safe to say that the games we saw that summer were exciting and fun to watch even when the teams playing wasn't "your team". No tournament in football since then has engaged me in the same way, I'm not even sure it can. To all who tuned in from all over the world that summer I can only hope you enjoyed yourself just as much as I did from my little corner of Sweden.

    94 was an interesting year. The Swedes weren't THAT big of a surprise. They were ranked third in the world heading in. The biggest disappointment? Maybe Norway. Thay had all the tools that year... Columbia being the other major flop.

      @@Juhaliza Jan Eriksson made 7 matches in qualifying (more than both Andersson and Björklund) and Zetterberg 6 matches in qualifying. I doubt that they wouldnt play. At least some matches. And against Brazil in the semifinal they would probably have been in the starting lineup due to injurys and tired players. Zetterberg where not popular in Söderberg/Lagerbäcks team, but in Tommy Svenssons team he was an obvious choise. Zetterberg didnt fit Lagerbäcks defensive strategy (he was probebly to lazy) but he was a brilliant free kick specialist (like a swedish Hagi but maybe not up to his standard). Jan Erikssons career came to a sudden stop due to injurys just like Brolin.

    It really saddens me what happened to Tomas Brolin after WC in 94: He was amazing from 92-94, but in late 94, he got injured, and though he recovered from injury, he was never able to recover his full fitness, and had weight issues, , and was sadly never the same player again.
    By 1998, only 4 years later, he was totally unrecognisable from the 94 WC: , Overweight, slow, and at times a laughing stock at Leeds and Crystal Palace, really sad.

      nanaglo4545 its been stagnant,, u could just list a scoop of teams who have been consistently flushing up the opposotion and being in the semis,, The germans the dutch etc... It comes down to a 3 or 4 horse race in the world cup,, u dont win a world cup with a team like iceland nd thats where tradition and roots come into play,, the home grown talents,, the chemistry of keepin them in the home leagues,,,that being the reason why teams like Sweden, Chile nd other nations struggle in the world cup while we see teams like germany storming anything on their way

    • @antoineha13
      @antoineha13 Před 6 lety +1

      FIFA would never allow an underdog win the world cup,not even making it to the final in fact..it's a lot of marketing going on there..that is the real disappointment,knowing that the same countries will run for the trophy every time.
