  • On January 1, 1942, the Rose Bowl was played at Duke University's Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. For decades, the 1942 game was the only Rose Bowl played outside of Pasadena, California. After Pearl Harbor, the game was nearly canceled in fear of a security risk with a crowded west coast stadium. However, former legendary football coach Wallace Wade offered to host the game at Duke. Despite the rain, 56,000 fans filled the stadium. Ultimately, Oregon State defeated Duke 20-16.
