Gerber: 24 tests. 19 tries. Try scoring ratio of ≈80%. Show me ANYONE who has that stat. And if you can find one, I bet you that they weren't playing outside centre.
No outside centre in the game of rugby is close to 80% . To put things in context. At his peak. on a rugby field. I dont know who was. Quicker Habanna or Danie Gerber. Would have close over a lenght of a rugby field
I have to say as a non-expert from the US it seems there is maybe recency bias? All players seem to be from the last 20 years on the list, and I know South Africa has a long history in the game, and they must have had all timers in the old days as well... But again I could very well be wrong, and it's not like I can question it or give you an alternative name for any of the chosen players 🤣
Fair point, well made. I largely agree with the list, but the most glaring omission is Danie Gerber (1988-1992) who should have taken outside center. Joost van de Westhuzen (1993-2003) could just as easily have taken the scrumhalf position. I'm also not convinced by Siya Kolisi's inclusion (although his captaincy is the most significant). Finally, I believe that our current fullback, Damian Willemse, is more talented than Andre Joubert.
No way. Anything before 20 years ago is nowhere the modern level.
@@stephenpaul7499Fourie vs Joost could go either way. Daniel Gerber only played 24 games, so it’s tough to include him. Fullback has to be Percy Montgomery, Willie would be the second choice.

The problem is during apartheid witch was around 30 years ago there were sactions againt south africa so we couldn't play against the best internatinal teams thus the level of competition was not that high in that time plus modern rugby players are on average more skilled and better athletes
Siya Kolisi is an openside flanker and Du Toit is Blindside. The numbers are the opposite in SA

are from the professional era - post 1996.
It's difficult to imagine a Springbok greatest team without Frans Steyn included, also Schalk Burger was an absolute legend at 6, but It is very difficult to pick only 15 when there are SO many greats to choose from.
I know, it was pretty hard to choose this list but I gave it a go! 😅

I think this author only started watching rugby a few years ago. In my opinion the Boks from the eighties were the best era.
Naas, Carel du Plessis, Ray Mordt and Danie Gerber will make my honour list.
I would agree that Habana is probably better but only marginally so. Cheslin is amazing but Mordt was such a beast

@@rugbybuzz Danie Gerber not making a greatest of all time is ludicrous. Unfortunately, he was playing during isolation so very limited international games, but I think he is widely considered not only the best center of SA but one of the best to ever play the game. Joost instead of Fourie Du Preez, Naas Botha (Arguable - Probable the best kicker in the game ever) instead of Handre Pollard. Wings, with the likes of Ray Mord, Carel Duplessis. Forwards....I don't know, lots of disputes over there. Frik Du Preez was a lock that kicked a drop goal, kicked a conversion and scored a try in the same match. None of your locks could come close to claiming that.
Best in last 20 year...still debatable, but more accurate. Best of all time....hmmm not.

We won two back to back world cups with The loose trio of siya,pstd and Duane. Siya is extremely underrated, i personally think he is the best 6 flank we ever had.I would start Him and have schalk burger coming off the bench as part of the bomb squad.
Carel du Plessis, Danie Gerber, Mannetjies Roux, HO de Villiers, Naas Botha, Frik du Preez, Uli Scmidt. from a different era and different regime😮

I have seen Du Pont, Gareth Edwards (yes him too) and Du Preez in action and for me Joost Van Der Westhuizen would be my pick as the best (to date) that the world has seen. He is the stand out Springbok and epitomized courage, creativity and skill.
Irishman here. Like to say pretty good. Joist Van Der Westhuisen might be my 9, Danie Gerber at 12 but all in all pretty good. Glad Siya got picked.

This list is impossible to choose and to please everyone with your choice too! Every player you named is an amazing player and there are so many more amazing players to choose from in the same positions. At the end of the day it comes day to who the supporter favours.

Great team but I'd have Percy Montgomery at 15 and Joost at 9 . I know people may say there is recency bias here but the fact is most of your selections are double world cup winners (which happened recently) so it's hard to disagree with this list. This team would destroy every team that has ever existed!

I agree with the team, except for 13 and 6 where I believe Danie Gerber would have been a better choice - he has incredible speed of a wing and the power of Lomu to push through tackles. At his best Am is brilliant but Jesse Kriel may have the edge right now. And let’s not forget Marius Joubert and Jacques Fourie, both brilliat players.
No. 6 is Schalk Burger where he won IRB breakthrough - and IRB Player of the Year. Only choice.

Siya Kolisi is an open side flanker. SA uses 6 an 7 diufferently
Wrong at 6, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14. Beast Mtwirara should be in there. Then Schalk Burger, Joost van der Westhuizen, Naas Botha, Michael de Plessis, Danie Gerber and Ray Mordt.
Rugby only became professional in 1995. You cant include non professionals, they’re nowhere near the current players.
Beast will even admit that he is nowhere near to Os. Os is the best loosehead to have played the game. His scrummaging would have destroyed Beast plus he was incredible around the park. Joost and FDP are equal. Personally like FDP more for his rugby IQ

Danie Gerber looked like a modern professional player but in amateur times. He was a freak. I remember him playing in his 40s and made fully pros look like shite. Rightly one of the best players ever

Let’s not forget Uli Schmidt at hooker, Karel du Plessis at wing. And Naas Botha, why does he not even get a mention? He was the greatest flyhalf the world ever had. Subjective, I know, and also depends on your age, I guess. Go Bokke!
Nice team. All but 15 is correct. Should, for sure be Frans Steyn, He's the best ever Bok. 2 world cups, 2 Lions series, French championships and the list goes on. He had flair and could kick better than most of the GOATs.
