Does anyone realize how awsome it was to be alive in America in 1980? The great Howard Cosell announcing, Ray Charles singing, Olympic champion Sugar Ray getting revenge on the unlikable Roberto Duran who supposedly had a steak and quart of milk in his belly. I was 12 and knew times were good. Angelo Dundee in Rays corner too.
My dad took me to this fight, on closed circuit TV. It was weird. I walked out of there, confused. Usually, a fight has a winner and a loser, or a draw, but not a quitter.
The tough old fighters from the 50s never said "No Mas". Can't imagine Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio or Sugar Ray Robinson saying such a thing. Basilio almost lost an eye against Robinson. I can't imagine that Duran felt more pain than Basilio felt that night. So what if Leonard showed disrespect? Ali showed disrespect against Frazier and Foreman, yet those guys didn't say "No mas". Ali himself continued to fight Kenny Norton with a broken jaw! The pain must have been epic in the history of boxing! The only other quitter that I can remember is Sonny Liston, who lay down twice against Ali.
Hundreds of pro boxer's have quit or there trainer's thrown in the towel! Chisora quit on his stool against Fury after getting a beating a boxing lesson 🥊 Present day you can't blame a boxer who quits as their health is at stake. We now know from medical science repeated hits to the head can lead to brain damage, parkinsons etc
@@C--A Duran didn't look like he was in bad shape. Check out the Basilio v Robinson fight. Basilio looked like he was going to lose an eye, but he didn't quit. He lost anyway. I would've quit if I was losing and taking the kind of beating he was taking. But I'm not a pro fighter. Ali almost quit when he got something in his eye in his first fight with Sonny Liston, but Dundee told him this is your big fight, you can't quit. Ali stayed in the fight, cleared his eye and it was Liston who quit. You quit once, it makes it that much easier to quit again, which is what Liston did in his second fight with Ali. Ali never quit again, though he admitted that he thought he was going to die in one of his fights with Frazier. Frazier never quit in his fights against Foreman, and those fights had to be stopped by the ref.
@@joep8787 May not have looked in bad shape to the people watching but Duran took some heavy shot's to the head. Inside his body he would be hurting and it must of just got to much for him to continue. I've watched the Clay (he wasn't Mohamed Ali yet) vs Liston first fight several times. Clay wasn't trying to quit, they say Liston put something on his glove to irritate Clay's eye, boxing back then was more dirty! Clay weathered the storm didn't let it get under his skin then went on to win the fight. Though admittedly Liston wasn't in the best physical condition for the fight plus he underestimated the young Cassius Clay.
@@joep8787 Duran lost something like 30 pounds in the space of a month for this fight. Losing that much weight that quickly has a huge impact on the body. Not saying he would have beaten leonard if Duran was in peak shape like leonard was but the fight would be way more intense and closer than it already was
@@Kimbo67 Yes, a lot of fighters gain weight between fights. Never could understand why they do that. They're supposed to be professionals, not to mention their lives are on the line like no other athlete. A split second can mean the difference between being alert and being unconscious. No doctor would ever stop keeping up with the latest developments in the medical field. You never see tennis or basketball players gain weight in their off seasons. It's hard to lose weight. Your body doesn't want to do it. It's much easier to stay in shape than get into shape. A boxer should be concentrating on timing and studying his next opponent. I like food, but I know enough to stop eating before I stop feeling hungry. Your brain is always 15-20 minutes behind your stomach. My weight hasn't fluctuated by more than 5 pounds either way in the past 30 years, and my income isn't dependent on a stable weight.

People crying about Leonard when Duran knew what Leonard liked to do dance around the ring. It was Duran saying he was going ko SR. He quit plan and simple
They where both amazing fighters!!! But.... Leonard did a lot of smack talking for his rematch, lets not forget Leonard demanded a rematch just months shortly after his whupping in the 1st match (claiming that if Duran didn't take the fight he'd fight someone else) Duran (who barely managed to shed the weight and train b4 the rematch) entered the ring expecting a brawl and all he got was a dancing ballerina for the 1st 6 rounds. But...I agree he shouldn't of quit.
Well that's a shit referee because if that ref would've done his job correctly then Tyson would've won when he dropped that Buster. The ref is suppose to pick the standing 8 count up off of the time keeper, but he didn't and actually gave Buster 2 extra secs to recover. That was a MAJOR,career altering BLUNDER!!
***** Well, maybe. It appears to me that Douglas was fully alert and ready to rise earlier. He simply waited till the count reached nine but could have gotten up two seconds earlier. We'll never know, I don't guess. What we can know is that Douglas beat Tyson's eye shut and when he dropped Tyson, the champ was in no condition to continue the fight.
andan04 Dude, what the fuck do you know?! Tyson and Douglas BOTH took the same time to raise up off of the canvas. If you still don't believe me ,them look up Tyson vs Douglas - identical 10 counts! Mike Tyson got "Jobbed" if you know what I mean. That ref has made THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN MODERN-DAY BOXING HISTORY! Tyson was the king of all kings at that time and the biggest money making attraction( love him or hate him) and that ref straight fucked us all!
I know Buster Douglas beat Tyson's eye shut but finished that fight without a visible mark on him. I know that when Douglas went down, he pounded the canvas in frustration and then looked, fully alert, at the ref, waiting for the count to reach nine before he rose. I know that when Tyson went down, he was fumbling around for his mouthpiece, which he put in backward, and obviously had no idea where he was. I know that if the ref had stopped the fight when Douglas got up, there would have been a huge controversy. I know that when the ref stopped the fight after Tyson got up, nobody wondered why. And I know that Douglas won that fight.
What I'm denying is the notion that Douglas was out and couldn't possibly have risen two seconds earlier. I believe he could have and that the same video you're referring to indicates that. I don't deny that Douglas was hurt when Tyson dropped him, which is why he used the full time allotted to him, but as he would prove just minutes later, he was clearly able to continue. I'm also denying the suggestion that Douglas didn't deserve to win that fight. He clearly took the fight to Tyson the entire night and landed the cleaner, harder shots throughout. In fact he landed more punches than Tyson threw.
Leonard the much better fighter. The first fight was more of a wrestling match. Leonard frustrated Durant and embrassed him so he just flat out quit. Was getting that butt whipped.
He was hurt & turned away, caught that big shot to midsection. I think he couldn't breath & got confused for a moment. No fighter of his caliber would quit. I'm sure he wished he could do it differently. But no matter what, Ray beat his asd

I cant hate on Leonard for fighting his fight. However, there was no need for the showmanship that he did in the ring. I guess it was mental warfare and a great tactic. Duran did not understand it. This was a different time. Duran thought boxing was two men standing in the center of the ring and slugging it out. Like I said, im not a fan of what Leonard did but I am certain that Leonard knew it would mentally screw Duran. It was genious, just not for me if that makes sense.
Leonard said that it WAS intentional. His brother had suggested that it would piss Duran off and hurt his confidence. All is fair in war. In a seige you might play loud music to keep the defenders awake in their bed. It's music but that is still warfare. With so much on the line nothing is truly off the table. Like how Duran taunted Ray before their first fight. Duran can't truly feel offended by Leonard's actions,... He can only be pissed that he did not think to do that first...
Cris Bonilla your making excuses. “Your not playing the way I want you too so I’m taking my ball and going home” is what your saying. It’s a fucking fight! I know you guys hate Floyd and sugar. 😂
The fancy leg work and froufrou only goes so far. Strategy is one thing, running away is a whole 'nother. Sugar Ray, like Mayweather today, gets much credit for "technique" when it's more like a method: the "Tag you're it! Now chase me! Chase me!" method.
Tell me how it is different? He went into the fight to box and he ducked around to piss Duran off... That's sports to get into your opponents head please tell me how it's different

I was 12 and knew times were good. Angelo Dundee in Rays corner too.
Why unlikable, tho? Hmmm...
My dad took me to this fight, on closed circuit TV. It was weird. I walked out of there, confused. Usually, a fight has a winner and a loser, or a draw, but not a quitter.
Fight of the decade.
Best ever in my book ...
Chisora quit on his stool against Fury after getting a beating a boxing lesson 🥊
Present day you can't blame a boxer who quits as their health is at stake.
If I'm not mistaken, this ref also worked the Tyson vs Douglas fight.
🎵"I'm tryin to hit u then quit u in the middle of the round like I'm Roberto Duran.
No mas."🎵 -- Jay Z on Missy Elliott's One Minute Man remix.
What a luxury ali shuffle!!👍💪❤ and then NO MAS!!!..
The most complete fighter of all times
what about his offensive? how many steps forward he did in this fight? 2? 1? 0?
i just can't like a fighter that all his steps are backwards (Aka "running")
I think I read some where that Ray Leonard was named AFTER Ray Charles :) (Rest In Peace Ray Charles)
Getrealpeeps
Thank goodness it wasn’t Ray Robinson.
what weight is this????
Durans dad is Mexican and his.mother is Panamanian.
who cares. he's a guy.
@@fastfootedone He's trying to make the point that A Mexican Boxer would never quit
One of the greatest fights ever.
It was a boring fucking fight
@@hari-cg9lb would not say boring but I agree it's not know as a great fight like thete first fight was. It mote known as a exraordnery fight for the way during quit.
Good fight. They just don't make em like they used to. Two warriors. Even with duran quitting he still fight like a warrior.
4:03 Most Hillarious Showboating 🤣🥊
Sugar Ray Leonard totally outplayed Duran,Duran quit because clearly he was exausted and couldn't even touch the fast and energetic sugar Ray even if he continued.
Prince Hamed would steal many of the moves that Leonard used here. (Leonard of course admitting to stealing from his hero, Ali much of his career.) Especially the head fakes in the 7th.
Leonard was a welterweight Ali. Same trainer, same style.
all leaonards moves were ALI... Still a great fighter... just not an original one..
Man, I miss Howard Cosell.
The GREATEST

🙂👍
Best boxing commentator, no question.
Ray Leonard before the torn retina is the best fighter in history.
Aquí duran simplemente en buen panameño, estaba bien cabriao' se dejo llevar y se olvido de todo su conocimiento tecnico y experiencia. Igual es probablemente el mejor boxeador latinoamericano de todos los tiempos
Cmon now hes not Julio Caesar Chavez that man was a GLADIATOR
He is the pride of Mexico. Probably the pride of the entire boxing world to be honest
he said he don’t want anymore 😂😂😂😂
He beat SSL ass in that first fight and he didn't quit because SSL was punishing him ...he just didn't give a fuck no more.
@@sb848 sure, Panamanian 😂
HAHA excuses and xcuses, Leonard didn't just beat Duran, he humiliated and mentally broke him. A brawler can never beat a counter puncher
BoyDanny93 that's not true. The brawler will sometimes win by stoppage
Klefty Ko BARELY!!!!
BoyDanny93 Duran beat Sugar Ray in their first fight, so your argument is flawed.
@csb73 and Leonard humiliated Duran the 2nd and 3rd fight. so your argument is irrelevant.
Exactly
Legendary
People crying about Leonard when Duran knew what Leonard liked to do dance around the ring. It was Duran saying he was going ko SR. He quit plan and simple
Simply sweet science.
They where both amazing fighters!!! But....
Leonard did a lot of smack talking for his rematch, lets not forget Leonard demanded a rematch just months shortly after his whupping in the 1st match (claiming that if Duran didn't take the fight he'd fight someone else)
Duran (who barely managed to shed the weight and train b4 the rematch) entered the ring expecting a brawl and all he got was a dancing ballerina for the 1st 6 rounds.
But...I agree he shouldn't of quit.
Same guy was the ref for the Tyson-Douglas fight. Cheers to Octavio Meyran!
What we can know is that Douglas beat Tyson's eye shut and when he dropped Tyson, the champ was in no condition to continue the fight.
andan04
Dude, what the fuck do you know?!
Hispanics is a term I don't use but what you are saying about the bias is very real.
No mas, or Uno mas?
Duran was seriously pissed off by Leonard's jokes... O_o
well to be fair, Duran expected to fight a man, not a clown
@@fastfootedone that made it worse my G. You sayin he lost to a clown my guy
@@fastfootedone he was getting embarrassed nd wasn't feeling it lmaoooo

One of the sickest combos ive ever seen
Why didn’t you show the 5-10 seconds leading up to the first moments of ‘no mas’? Bad editing
in the hands of stone movie they painted it like duran just didn't care at all... in reality he got his clock cleaned out punched out moved out boxed and he gave up
And Duran would've been kayoed flat on his back within another couple rounds.
glory days of boxing
Leonard couldn’t beat a conditioned Duran that’s why he chose to fight an out of shape Duran
Sugar ray was magic in this match..
Looked like running away to me
Any of these 2 warriors would have handed Mayweather a loss. The talent in the ring was amazing
this what you call great boxing match, not those shitty fights of gayweather
100% truth! Gayweather)))))
Typical ignorant hater. You don't know shit about boxing if you think Mayweather wasn't great. I'm not much of a fan, but I've been a faithful boxing fan since I was 5 years old, so I know where credit is due.
yeah quitting is way better than defensive fighting. how about you educate yourself in regards to technique, speed, and raw skill because Floyd has all of those in absolute spades. there is a reason Floyd is undefeated. doesnt happen by mistake
jeremiah jonh daniel garcia lol someone quit and you call it a great fight.... Go figure.
floyd can be frustrating to watch but take a look at mayweather vs gatti and watch pure genius on display
Cuando mi país era prospero y atractivo a la inversión de todo el mundo. Invierte en Venezuela, decían las esquinas.
Like Jay z said on Missy Elliot song minute man and I quote: Hit u and quit u in the middle of the round like a Roberto Duran No Mas
Still shocked that Duran quit. Some fighters rather die in the ring than to quit.
That's coz Sugar was just running around and not really fighting... Some call it strategy... I say it's running away.
where is NO MAS moment in here?
These where days of boxing
,
Howard Cosell on the call THE GOOD OL DAYS !!
He can only be pissed that he did not think to do that first...
duran was a real fighter my favorite fighter who always wanted to confront without dancing, duran wanted pure skill fighting
Cris Bonilla your making excuses. “Your not playing the way I want you too so I’m taking my ball and going home” is what your saying. It’s a fucking fight! When Latino fighters get their asses handed to them by black fighters, Hispanic dudes be like “he should stand their and fight like a man”...........force him to fight! That’s your job.
That's why you cut off the ring, idiot. It's a tactical approach from outside fighting as opposed to inside fighting.
also known as being a little girl
RobbieJHD Then what does that make you?
Sugar Ray was a smart fighter. He frustrated his opponents by sticking and moving. Mayweather reminds me of Sugar Ray.
im a duran fan but sugar ray much better than mayweather and he does it all with more flair as well, mayweather most boring fighter
Tell me how it is different? He went into the fight to box and he ducked around to piss Duran off... That's sports to get into your opponents head please tell me how it's different
He was over furious. I was a kid when I saw that fight. My 2 favorite boxers. Duran la cagastes still one of the greatest of all time
I'm more shocked he didn't quit after 3:40.. I think i would have just walk into the locker rooms after that like "nope fuck it"
sejlane Leonard will be known as one of the greatest of all time rregardlessif you think he sucks or not. Duran did not throw that fight he quit. After beating him the first time he got relaxed and out of shape. A hungry Leonard came back and got his belt back. Watch the documentary "No mas". He was just above average? You can not ever be half a boxer that man was. Keep crying
