An observation I noticed is that when you use the clutch counter though you are unable to be knocked off for a moment you still take damage while you're on during an attack. Notice when he grabbed on during the snowball attack at around 2:50 he still lost some health while he was doing the clutch attack. Not super big but definitely something to keep in mind when you decide to use it.
The Dodo lance in the beta might just be monster bits slapped onto an iron frame, but ya gotta admit that the spinning drill tip is pretty dope

I wish they would add a feature that allowed things like lance and gun lance to give some sort of cover for players behind you.
Currently you can only do this vs xino beam attack
Yeah i kinda wish they have that feature, so we can experience what feel to have a "tanker" in mhw

It really isn't needed
Being a "healer" causes people to be lazy, sloppy and rigid.
A "tank" can't activate a spell that forces a monster to attack you.
All rolls from any other rpg element will disrupt a hunter.
The world of monster hunter is unique for players. There's no rules or rolls.
It's all about the hunt

Learned this the hard way when I clutched to a Brachydios and he dipped his head on the ground and blew me up.
What would happen if you do a slinger burst when clutched on his face while he's charging up his nova? Anyone care to test it?
Attack only works if they hit you with their bodies
You cant counter Claw non physical attacks
Wolverine, Paul. I think you misread my comment. I said Teo would nova while I was on his face, aka after I clutch claw countered another move.
Lance main here, be very careful when you decide to use Counter Claw - YES you absolutely stay rooted on the monster to wound and it's my main anti-Tigrex tactic BUT when a monster is enraged, shell up or counter thrust only. If you counter claw onto Tigrex's head while he's charging and enraged, chip damage can and will eventually kill you, so position yourself in such a way that the arms hit you
The new lance moves really made the weapon feel more mobile. It’s usually one of my least used weapons, but I’m definitely going to give it some more love come iceborne.
I think guard skill should reduce stamina consumption of power guard too.
A change I noticed was that when you first enter a normal counter thrust stance, your shield now has the same sound and visual effect on it as the power guard. I haven't personally figured out if this change actually has any tangible effects on the guard though. Have you managed to find a difference in the normal counter thrust guard?
Arekkz seems to be saving the best (HH) for last...

And they are adding some sort of offense guard skill, really gonna use Lance into iceborne.
Switching to regular slinger mode is useful for clutch clawing onto a stunned monster. I think that will be used quite a bit.

*IMPORTANT NOTE* you can still strafe guard (hold R2 -> hold R2+L2) to regen stamina while blocking and not messing up your positioning (i asked a streamer to test in the beta)
for those of you who don't know why this is a big deal. While guarding and standing still you don't regenerate stamina, but if you move you can regenerate your stamina. However this normally faces in the direction are moving which forces you to either move towards the monster or expose your back/sides to it. but using the strafe guard your hunter will face whatever direction your camera is pointing allowing you to move in any direction while keeping your shield between you and the monster. this is helpful against attacks that have many hits that would normally overwhelm you eg kulve taroths lava pool attack (requires guard up) or when you just need to regenerate stamina or move to the side while guarding.
It also applies to gunlance

I've been getting into trouble with this in Iceborne. I tend to hold (L2 + R2) all the time as you say makes your hunter face camera direction. I also like to dash guard (triangle) when a monster attacks to help move hunter to where I anticipate the monster's weak spot will be.
However now with Iceborne, L2 + triangle is the Clutch Claw Dive Thrust so I would stupidly try to press (L2 + R2 + triangle) hoping to strafed Dash Guard facing the monster and more often than not Dive Thrust straight into a monster's attack. Gonna need to train myself out of this habit. :/

that guard up move just made my day. Now there's actually a difference between using lance and CB and completely makes sense the best shield weapon in the game gets this for free. I love the GL and the CB but I always thought Lance should have guard up as part of the moves to make it truly impenetrable. Now all I need is a rework of the Challenger Mantle so that it taunts the monster and maybe gives you defense up and I would be set for Iceborne, be a true true tank for mp
I'm confused, I always thought the Power Guard had a Guard Up effect...
@@AlpacaZ nope, it simply had a 360° radius, didn't proc a counter inmediately so it could block multiple hits and while it depleted stamina continuously, stamina drop was negated on hit. You receive more chip damage tho.
I wonder if that new guard up boost will activate faster if you have focus.
Counter claw is amazing against Tigrex! He so aggressive he basically beat himself hahah!!
Lance is dope as hell I have a clip of cutting off glavs tail blade with the clutch claw counter in the guiding lands
The ,lance had a lot of new additions in World, even before Iceborne. The amazing Power Guard, as well as the Leaping Thrust, both of which are super useful and have become staples of the weapon.
did you get a dmg buff on the guard up stance as well? or oist it only for true block
I think light and nimble weapons like SnS or Bow can Tenderize with the clutch claw attack too, but is not always like the heavier ones.
There're times where with a light weapon I could apply wound damage and make it drop pods.

I think that if you clutch-claw attack a spot enough with a light weapon it builds up into a wounded area

I know it's a deco/armor skill but the existence of Offensive Guard is going to change everything for a couple weapons.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem like Offensive Gaurd procs off of the normal counter block (R2 + 0)

Not only it is already popular and overused. GP is damn easy to do and OP already.
Variety is nice but 80% of players will be LS/ CB Mains.
Claw guard is awesome but you can still take damage so watch that health.

Guard up is one of the few gems i'm missing. so happy i don't need it anymore.

To anyone who runs wide range who has a lance main as a friend help them practice the new guard point. Best way is to consume a stamina restoring item whilst they practice against monsters. Might sound like a waste of resources but if your friend can become better with it, I think it is TOTALLY worth the investment
Relevant story but semi-off topic I had a lance main in my squad against Kulve. She ended up getting double lava breath corner pinned. I run Mushroommancer lvl 3 religiously when not using a stamina use reduction horn, popped a devil's blight and she managed to survive that situation.
is it possible to set the default firing mode in guard shot to the normal slingershot mode?
Hey, how do I unlock the optional quests of arena special HR? , I have captured all the possible monsters but some of the quest don't show up
I find myself using r2+l2 to guard and strafe is this still possible in iceborn?
What is the new "wound" thing that was mentioned? Something about heavy weapons creating weak points? If so, how does it work?
After you grapple a monster you can press y (Xbox top button) to wound the monster. This softens the spot giving your more damage (In many cases making a tough exterior very vulnerable).
This interacts with weakness exploit which was changed for iceborne. Now it gives 30% on weakspots and 50% on wounded weakspots. Between the upped affinity and damage you can see why clutch claw is so nice

But i think there are some unguardable attacks in the beta, like Rathalos flying grapple spin and Anjanath grab/bite thing...🤔 it is going to be a pain to pull it off though 😅
You cant guard those because they're specifically meant to get around guard.
You put up a shield, they grab your shield and smash you around like hull while you'rr still strapped to it.

Since I got guard up I never been hit out of my guard by any monster

It's correct from what I've seen, it will have it's limits though. KT's attack will still need guard up, and monsters like deviljho have an unblockable attack that's too quick to use that power guard. But for monsters like vaal and teostra where it's only 1 hit and an obvious tell, it'll work good if it's timed right.

It is really nice when the monster is moving and you are not sure to touch him with basic attack and you don't move with this attack so if there is danger in front of you use that
Does anyone know if the beta will come to Xbox? I've played it on PS4, But my main is on Xbox. Also I don't have a PS4 Pro and compared to the Xbox One X, it just isn't as smooth.
Yah I saw that guard up think I was like it that new what it does? I really REALLY hope it block onblockable the move cost a tone of stamina already and I alwas felt like it should block unblockable just the way the move felt AKA YOU put yourself grounded whit your sheild up and you charge the sheild and it cost a tone of stamina so you can't spam it yah sure the counter is good but it alwas felt like it was kinda just ok insteed of being that move that just block all
It's still worth geming in guard-up bc it allows you to block unblocksbles with a regular guard as opposed to having to use the counter guard stance
It really depends on what monster with unblockables we're fighting
there are some moves that are so easily telegraphed, i think i wouldn't gem in guard up for those
and some might not even be punishable with counter anyways

how the actual do you play with KB&M? that seems like WAAAAAAAY too much work for this game. I Play on PC too but controller is so much easier. I guess its muscle memory from my Freedom Unite days.

Kent in tri and tri ultimate I was never with out dash juice in world I never use it. But now I will have to farm it for sure
lance is better than sword and shield since have better pin point weak spot also the guard is more powerful

it has guardadvance out of combo
and in 4 directions
forward step
the leaping thrust
and the powerguard mechanic which really changed up the playstyle on top of all the other changes
in World's powerguard lancing you thrust -> powerguard -> counter, repeat
+ you have 3 steps and guardadvances into any direction with leaping thrust to do major repositioning really fast out of combo

HBG with Guard up and Shield mods x3 pretty much becomes lance on steroids, can block any move in the game by standing still lmao. Using it just seems cheap and that you can easily steamroll any monster 1v1, imagine 4 ppl using it in a team like dark side does, gamebreaking lmao
