      But his reasoning didn't make sense, yes they are the same attack power, however they are only the same JUST because of their tier, there was no reason that makes logical sense. There is not ever a situation where there will be a lance and a gun lance that both do the same exact damage in the same tier, so this whole video is pretty trivial. If you have the hard bone lance II vs the bone cannon II however, then the lance would perform better in the opening potential, making it a superior weapon. But even still, I don't think you should decide your weapon based of stats.

      Don't get me wrong, I love the Lance, but the gunlance has shelling damage which is an x-factor in of itself with its ignorance of weak spots. Gunlance shelling types aren't all the same. For example normal type gun lances are great at the shelling combo but not so great at charged shelling like long type gun lances. If you were to compare shelling to a lance then you would need to factor in the lances ability to sustain itself in a head on fight. Personally I don't think those two things (shelling combo vs sustained and consistent damage) are comparable. If they were comparable it wouldn't get the bigger picture imo.

The biggest advantage it has is that it's the most offensive weapon in the game and that you can attack monsters constantly with next to no downtime if you're good enough. I am a lance player, but I discovered the gunlance a while ago for myself. As a lance-main I can say, that the lance is a very good weapon for beginners or for someone who want to play safe. The counter attack of the lance can be made after each hit, so its possible to counter monster attacks that surprise you while you are making your attack combos (even when its only ramming the lance into the monster i call it a combo :D).
    The gunlance is a very good weapon for players who already can read monster attacks and behaviour, because its a weapon that is very slow to take back and if you are making a combo, you have no protection when the monster suddenly attacks you. Its also very effective to break hard parts of monsters (like the horns of diablos and nergigante) because of the explosive attacks of the gunlance.
    Finally I can say: lance for more safety, gunlance for more damage (through hard monster parts). At the end you can play the weapon that is more fun to play for you guys =)

    I don't think the some of the criteria you used to compare both weapons are fair. Why make an analisys of the draw attack if neither of those weapons use it much? It's also hard to compare both because of the different type of shelling. One can say lance has a better vertical moveset than most of gunlances because of the vertical poke bein superior to gunlance's vertical poke behind the shield, but you can use something like Zorah's GL and deal 100 blast damage upwards by (R2+ triangle) -> charged shell. Each type of shelling is a sub-weapon class of it's own.
    And about the guarding capabilites, I would like to add that lance's guarding capabilities much better because you can easily cancel the trust attacks recovery animation into the counter move (R2 + Circle). With gunlance you can only cancel the recovery animation of the trusts into a leap. Not by blocking unfortunately.
    Edit: Grammar

      @EbonMaster Před 6 lety +5

      Gunlace uses the charging scoop a lot. It's a great gap-closer for short distances and it allows you to transition into a slide on slopes, couple that with the fact that you can immediately transition into a downwards slam and it's pretty much essential for your damage loop. It's the arguably most universal move in the Gunalance's kit.

  • @Aitenass
    @Aitenass Před 6 lety +3

    I was wondering about your combo choice for the "opening damage" category. With the Gunlance, after the quick reload, you can directly go into the slam attack. It shortens the loop, but allows to go into the harder hitting moves quicker. It's also great for Burst builds based on Normal shelling.
    Edit: I also disagree with the long reload procedure for the Burst loop. After unloading the shells, you can go into the sweep attack, a quick reload, and start over. This does eat through sharpness very fast, however, so you'll need to break the loop every few repetitions to sharpen.

    I've really been loving both of these weapons this past week and both are extremely offensive. Lance can stick to enemies like glue without ever having to sheath, making the "lower" damage it does higher since you never take a break. The gun lance lacks some movement options the lance has so sometimes you do have to sheath, but the ridiculous damage you can do more than makes up for that. IMO both have their shining points and monsters they're better with. Both are amazing.

    Thx for the video! I think it is very informative to people who are new to these two type of weapons. However, I think you can include more discussions about play styles and combos. Lance allows you to continuously dish out damage, while Gunlance allows you to deal burst damage in short amount of time. There are many different factors that could affect a Gunlance's damage output. That being said, I think you could do an in-depth discussion about Gunlance shelling types and play style (Just like what you did with the damage boost and defense boost items.) As a veteran of both weapons (Lance and Gunlance,) I am more than happy to tell you more about the machanics of the two weapons.

    I think while the full guard is properly compared in the defense portion, the counter guard would more be an 'X-factor' in which case we also need to consider the Shells and Wyrmstake as other X-factors in the case of the gunlance. These two give as said a counter attack, and some super high burst damage. Including the quick reload combo reset, you could quite easily slip in a burst fire (depending on the gunlance shelling type as that determines ammo which subsequently is the power of burst fire).

      @Jeikobu Před 6 lety +1

      Any form of melee damage while actively in the air can mount, but it’s not what the gunlance is good at. Gunlance has 3 types of shells. Normal, which is weakest but has by far the most ammo, which burst fire which empties the whole clip is strongest. Wide is the strongest, but shoots like a shotgun, it’s the best and normal shelling, but it looses out in the added up damage of burst fire as it only has 2 shots. The final is long which has the longest range, makes it typically better at charged shelling, but it only has 3 shots.
      Anyway the quick reload will reload the shells, but not the stake. Another thing to remember is the wyrmfire which is a long charge up for big damage and a long cooldown, good when a monster is down or asleep.
      One final thing, all shelling attacks are unblockable, which means they will always do max damage regardless of where on a monster you hit. As I said in my first post, all the shelling and stake should be included in its x-factor, which this video only mentioned in general dps, when they are purely for burst potential, and considering quick reload is one of the most common resets for gunlance, It’s not like you would be without ammo for those attacks often.

    and here i thought that the lances x factor was it that dealt both weapon damage types or have they changed it?
    cause as far as I remember lances used to deal both slashing and impact damage depending upon which one was better that allowed lances to not only cut parts but build up concussion or shatter parts

    Nice video, but it's difficult to compare the gunlance to lance since the main dps from the gunlance is...well...the gun. There are a lot of combos that drastically change depending on the type of shells. Also, it is poss I'll ble to do the burst with the gunlance and reload mid combo and refresh it. It would have taken more time, but obviously more damage that also ignores armor

  • @seantaylor1568
    @seantaylor1568 Před 5 lety

    How you gonna get the dps of the normal swing combo with GL when you're not doing it right? After the quick reload, you skip rising slash and go straight into downward as it does far more damage. The whole point of the combo is for the wide swing for it's huge damage and wide sweep. Also you can't really compare damage with these weapons as shelling is the main feature of GL and is super complicated.

    About the guard there is also the fact that lance can guard during the combo by pressing back or left or right + triangle. Which make it so much more safe to play than GL. You can follow that back/side step block by a shield bash with triangle which can stun or a lance attack with circle to start your combo.

    The Gunlance loop actually uses full burst after overhead slam and the damage there varries significantly between GL's but full burst is the 2nd hardest hitting move in the GL's moveset(next to big ekkusplosion). Since you can use quick reload after wide sweep and imidiatly do an overhead slam after that the time becomes shorter and the damage significantly higher

    I think the lance is overall better. The reach combined with the guard makes it an aggressive weapon, with very consistent dps. Its (rather surprising) mobility and charge also help with sustaining damage or being more evasive.
    The lance is, imo, the ultimate no-nonsense weapon in this game. There aren't flashy explosions or spins or twirls or flips:
    You just have a big ass shield that can block 95% of the attacks in the game (the full 100 with Guard Up), so you don't have to worry about dying any time soon (and unless they've fought a tempered Jho recently, any lance main worth his salt would struggle to remember the last time they fainted).
    You have a long stick that simply pokes and pokes until whatever you're poking is dead (however long this takes depends solely on the lance you pick for that monster, as well as what part you're poking).
    You have a long reach, which can be used to hit precise points on a monster (dealing either impact and cutting, depending on what does more damage), so tall or flying monsters aren't too big a deal.
    You have a simple but quick hop that can be used for re-positioning or evading if you want it that way.
    You have a charge which can chase down monsters, faster than a sprint, whilst being safe behind a shield too.
    You have an easy to abuse mounting attack.
    You have a counter attack to avoid damage, chain attacks and keep up the dps.
    You have an ultimate shield which provides that extra layer of protection, whilst giving you more options to attack after countering.
    It's just the most consistent weapon in the game. I always say, if you've hit a wall and there's a monster that keeps beating you, learn lance. If you already play lance and the monster is still beating you, learn lance better. You'll kill it in no time.

      Wellington This right here explains exactly the true greatness of Lance. High survivability, with good mobility and decent DPS. IMO GL while being able to deal more damage feels more like a defensive lance do to the less aggressive options you have and overall less mobilty and easy to lose sharpness along with less DPS than lance

    idk if there's anyone mention about how you measure weapon's reach , but do you know that Gunlance's poke behind the shield is kind of upward thrust(am i call it correctly tho?) hence the distance between gunlance and the target pole is way more significant. if you were to combine a thrust then make sure it s the same kind of thrust i.e. just compare vertical poke , or upward poke reaches.
    P.s. i'm not saying that normally GL without shelling has the exact same reach as Lance because i don't know.

  • @jultud29940
    @jultud29940 Před 6 lety +5

    I'm a GL lover ever since I tried it back in MH4U :^)
    The main thing that makes me prefer GL over Lance is that GL is way more offensive with the same guard as the Lance. The counter and the perfect block are nice but the simple guard with Guard boost lv3 is just enough for me.
    And the fact that GL have 3 different types of cannon makes it even more interesting. This aspect of the weapon isn't as good in this MH because there isn't much variety in the cannon type. For instance, want to play Normal GL --> Go Pink Rathian royal burst, there isn't a better one. Want to play frag ones ? Jyuratodus is my favorite (and probably one of the strongest) but it has water element :-/

    • @ryokoshii

      Actually the counter is the thing that makes the lance more aggressive then any other weapon.
      You can counter guard mid combo and it's fairly quick so you have more time to damage while a gun lance have to stop their attack and guard first.

    I feel like not mentioning the jump attack out of charge with Lance is a huge oversight. As someone who has mained Lance in MHW for over 1300 hours, a huge part of my play style especially in group play is getting those mounts at the start of a hunt. if you are aiming for it, this weapon is one of the best weapons in the game for getting mounts. It's also worth mentioning the Lance is more mobile then the GL with it's ability to Guard Advance, simply triple hop forward into Guard Advance and finish with lunge if need be. Guard Advance can also be used to guard while jumping down ledges which is very useful in Elder's Recess.
