Video 15.1 Distinguishing Raising from Control
The DP subject in raising constructions like "John is likely to leave" starts in the embedded clause and raises to the specifier of TP. This is contrasted with control constructions like "john is reluctant to leave". Where the subject of the main clause appears to get a theta role from both reluctant and leave in violation of the theta criterion. 4 tests are presented to distinguish the two constructions: Evaluating the Theta roles, The availability of Extraposition and Clausal Subject constructions, and the retention of idiomatic meanings. This video also introduces PRO as an explanation of the apparent violation of the theta criterion in Control constructions.
