fun fact: the siren head sound is actually from a malfunctioning tornado warning siren in Chicago
More fun fact, that's not a malfunctioning siren, that's the intended siren sound.
@@beanguyensonr this sound was intended to scare tornado away
The constant dissonant notes never resolving were chosen because it prevents the human ear from getting used to them, it isn't malfunctioning.
And the sounds from Number stations, specifically the Swedish Rhapsody,
czcams.com/video/GUQUD3IMbb4/video.html
Why did you say malfunctioning? It's not true at all, and I've never heard that so it doesn't seem to be a common disbelief. And learnt to look shit up, this just proved that you just create beliefs based on shit anyone says and don't care about if it might be real or not, that's both dangerous and highly idiotic.
The "Aggressive Hula Hoops" are actually based off of one depiction of an Angel in the Bible. A lot of angels in the book are actually described as looking like eldritch nightmares, thus why they always announce their presence with "Be not Afraid".
They're known as the Ophanim.
"Be not afraid"
"Oh good, I was completely terrified but now that you said that we're cool"
@kevin willems Well, they at least look like humans with wings, there angels with 6 wings that hide everything but their faces - if you see six winged something with a human face you would freak out. And it gets more and more strange from there
Well they a atleast have common sence
Yeah, that’s a deliberate misinterpretation. Angels have many forms and ‘be not afraid’ is said because those who encounter them are in the presence of one the Lord’s most powerful servants.
Thank you so much for playing! It was a blast to watch this live, too.
Right now we're tweaking a lot and also revamping the levels you're talking, but it's good to see that you enjoyed it so much!
We're hoping that once we've ironed out these last few things we can begin porting it over to Steam like I did for Shrine 1.
oh shit its the dev guys!
Scumhead, you are a god, and I wish I had money to make it into an actual game...
have to know, are the floating enemies inspired by The Hanging Balloons story by junji ito?
@@yamaddie Yep, a lot of the enemies in the game are inspired by creatures that I like from pop culture- with my own twist ofc
@@scumhead0 What do you think youll name the heat axe once you do?
"Have you ever played an organ constructed out of human meat?"
"What?"
"A meat organ Sam!"
"That isn't even possible!"
"Yes it is! I've played one... Sounds terrible"
An organ... made of organs? Ahahahaha...
The art direction in this mod is THE best I’ve ever seen from a Doom mod. Bravo.
Eh... It's one of the ugliest I've seen.
You don't speak shit about Hue Shading
@@mugwump7049 Damn. I know everything's objective and all that, but calling this one of the ugliest mods you've seen? I'd love to see what you like.
@@DracXBelmont See my main comment for the reasons why. As for what I like, I'm afraid that I'm much more knowledgeable in custom content for Quake than for Doom, but Eviternity is a good example of beautiful.
@@mugwump7049 Okay, I'll give you that. I've just recently started getting into custom wads and Eviternity was the first one that really struck me. The music is fantastic.
I still think that this mod looks visually striking and very Not Doom-Like, which works in its favor. The shading and colors give it a very comic book feel while maintaining the overall dark atmosphere of its predecessor.
0:42 "It's the Dark Souls of doom mods. Really makes you *feel* like Sekiro" - IGN, probably
icarus, the Hula Hoop boss
its a biblical angel
thats what they look like
It's a seraph. Seraphs are said to take the form of a single eye surrounded by a wheel.
@@MechagirlSachiko Ophanim are the ones that look like wheels. Seraphim have three pairs of wings.
Yeah I was about to mention that tho I think this is meant to be an evil one, note how it looks like an upside down cross in some frames
Not a seraph, what you are referring to is the thrones (third in the angels hierarchy). The seraph is more of a multiple pair of wing with eyes on it
There's a good reason that angels tend to introduce themselves with 'be not afraid'. They were supposed to be terrifying, mind-bending creatures that are difficult to visually understand. In that sense, they really have more in common with creatures of the Cthulhu mythos than with the modern conception of them.
Hey I love the presentation of this. Disturbing mildly alien medieval but drawn as stylised pastel, that's new but also vaguely reminiscent of 80's scrollers.
Noticed at 10:48 the horseman boss's theme is actually the theme for Beelzebub's fight in SMT Nocturne.
Funny cuz I just remembered how big into smt the coder for shrine is
Yep!
Sadly v1.5 will replace the music.
13:31: That's actually a Throne, one of the weirder kinds of angel in the Bible. Look them up sometime; they'll make you realize exactly why the first thing they say to humans is invariably "Don't be afraid."
Thankyou I would have gone on a rant about the Paradiso from the Divine Comedy (btw that's where all the angel imagery comes from Bayonetta too). The Divine Comedy is one of my favorite books for reasons unknown to even myself, I just have this attraction to a hell, purgatory, and heaven that combine Greek mythology and other mythologies into it. It's such a cool blend
Don't know about you guys but Spinning Ring Bible is my favorite representation of God.
So the atom looking dude is a throne angel? Is canon that thrones can transform?
@@PGESTELAR it's base upon interpretation. Some saw them as more traditional angels but many came to know them as wheels due to gods throne being made of wheels and a line where a description of a chariot was construed as calling the wheels angels. So essentially blame the fact that the Bible is a text that has been hand copied thousands of times, translated into every language, and been rewritten a bunch. Things get lost, and misconceptions form.
@@zoidsfan12 oh... So with this "description" in theory I can have a vehicle with angel wheels...
But most important question.... Could be that an angel is made of onion rings? Think about it, onion rings appear as wheels, and if angels can transform that means there could be an angel made of onion ring, or... Something worse...
Icarus: "A very aggressive series of Hula Hoops."
Me: Taking notes for DnD campaign bosses.
Absolutely Grotesque,
*Absolutely Glamorous.*
6:10 heh I get it, cause it's an organ...
Oh hey, I recognize the lighthouse's siren sound there! that's a broken tornado siren that malfunctioned in Chicago a couple years back. Excellent use of it!
Thought Icarus was about to start banging "1000 Ways To Get Paid" by NxxxxxS
@@audiosurfarchive Same. Excellent song
@@cartoonhead9222 ayyyyyyy, nice.
Pro tip: There's more than one spawn for the Bone Mortar! There's a soul secret containing it in the first level. Good luck using it for a long while though.
I think I found the gore blaster in the first level but that
That's something
So the intro to this mod is basically dark souls 1's undead asylum?
@Randy Burton ancient souls.
I love how the Bloodrail is literally just a reskin of the Quake 2 railgun.
The thicc boi in this mod looks alot like the pure flood forms from halo 3
"Time to go the pub..." is the best response to defeating an ancient god that resides at the center of existence that I've ever heard.
This is like the visual design from Agony paired up with game design that's actually competent.
The airdash mechanic with the boneblade imo looks strongly inspired by Wrath: Aeons of Ruin, it's a nice touch.
While making it I didn't even know what wrath was
Shrine II is for sure a shoe-in for the 2020 Cacowards. This has been a great year for Doom, what with the Console Doom patches and remaster of Doom 64, the release of Doom Eternal and all these phenomenal Doom mods like Jazz Jackrabbit II and Shrine.
Love that one of the enemies is actually just a meaty Pac-Man, dying animation and everything. The enemies in general are great - everything from references over horrifying hanged men balloons, all very "Biblically Accurate Angel"-esque, with one straight up being one.
And killing the organ by destroying its main organ is a pretty fun pun!
The spritework is stellar
The buglike weapon in this mod makes me think of a similar weapon in Half-Life, you get it from alien grunts and it fires homing alien bees
Infact i think that might be where this mod got the idea for that weapon
Guy who programmed the weapon here, and yeah. I saw the graphics for a bug gun and I kinda forced scumhead to let me rip off the hivehand.
@@mengo329 I don't think it counts as a rip off if it's better than the original, and quite honestly the original isn't half as fun, so good job on it, and on the guns across the board.
30% of comments: *talking about the hoola hoop angel and why they always say "be not be afraid"*
The Goreblaster is EASILY my favorite weapon in Shrine 2. All the other weapons are nice too, but the Goreblaster has that sheer, raw power that feels so good to fire.
"A camel type creature with a scentient hump" LOL
Alright, you sold me with the bee gun. Love me a good weaponized bee.
14:59 Well, the level's name is Lust, so semen?
15:06 Ah, so it's Xenomorph -blood- semen. Gotcha.
I do not want to know what creature produced all that coom
@@ghoulbuster1: Think of it like it's spirituality taken to its most absurd lengths: whenever a sperm cell dies, its spirit ascends to that lake. ANY. SPERM CELL. AT ALL.

Doom but instead of demons it's old testament angels which ironically is much more menacing
“Aggressive hula hoops” clearly you haven’t seen a biblically accurate angel *smug Robert Downey Jr. image*
Looks like someone got tired of waiting for Scorn so they made it in doom.
This TC has excellent visuals, gameplay, atmosphere -- their is clearly quite a bit of skill and talent here. It's really inspirational from a creative means. I'm interested in seeing what will come next.
Well I'm working on an expansion as a solo job, but we're working on patches to improve and add on to Shrine II itself.
That's really awesome, man. Can't wait :D
Update: Shrine 2's expansion is cancelled and is being made into Shrine 3 lol
Got a preview up on my channel
This is an astonishing new visual paradigma.
EDIT: Back when I first made this comment two years ago, I was one of the many who held the erroneous belief that Azathoth's dreams have created reality as we know it. I won't delete this comment to pretend that I never held this belief, but I don't want anyone uninformed to see my previous statement and take it to be true.
What better way to smite those who wronged you.
no, it isn't
@@ikaiju-eu9wn You're right. I admit when I first wrote this I was one of the many who believed that long held misconception. Since then I learned that this is a conflation of Azathoth with a deity created by one of Lovecraft's contemporaries. I forgot about this comment, and while I won't claim I never held this belief, as erroneous as it was and still is, I'm going to blank this comment so anyone who doesn't know better won't take this as a fact.
Man, these folks really improved on the first form, I really couldn't g et through the first one, but, this one looks like it's never a dull moment.
I've been watching yt vids about doom mods for over a year now (kinda just for some inspiration) and this is probably the coolest and most beautiful looking one I've seen.
It’s Amazing How One Game Spawned Decades Of Non Stop Inspiration
For Shrine and Shrine II being free on steam it's well worth your money. A little short, first one only has 13 or so levels and the second 32.
If i recall, the boss that looks like rings or hula hoops is a visual representation of what an angel is described to look like in ezekial's part of the Bible.
@Michael Persico well you're not wrong.
Finally another edition of Doom mod madness
I've played this game for over 90 hours & from what I've come across is this. You actually can unlock Secret Mode where you can use Shrine 1 weapons which is fun, but even harder than previous difficulty why? I think you either have to beat this game on Nightmare Mode or Tusk Will Die Mode I really can't tell. I'm surprised so far no one has ever notice that Secret mode yet and post it here on CZcams. It's to bad because I can't do video gameplay to show it off because I have no knowledge of how to do all this CZcams stuff properly.
Still, I hope you all had a great time playing this game & actually beat this in Hardest Difficulty of them all. :)
I had no idea there was a sequel. The crucifix and angels seem like an odd theme here because this game feels way more cosmic/inter dimensional rather than heaven VS Hell.
I haven't been creeped out or scared by a video game for 20+ years, when I was 11 playing AVP2. But this mod and the first one genuinely creep me out, probably even more than Scorn; something about the ambience and low-fi look must contribute to that
Good to hear! I was trying to put some more spooky sections in, like the carnival maze, tryptophobe hell tunnel, and that section in Map02.
Style-wise, it's like a 2D version of Scorn.
i can't get over the "you some found ice mana" at 2:59
The most obvious soul-borne ref is a guy tossing you a key to your freedom from a hole in the ceiling
Why does this look better than so many of those retro shooters that pop up on Steam? Are you sure this is a mod?
Zombie Gandhi
Easy answer, this is released for free. The mod author isn’t concerned with robbing people of their money with nostalgia bait.
@@chrism1518 wich "retro" fps is a nostalgic cashgrab?
@@valentinom.4292 Strafe.
This really showcases some serious talent. I just started playing through it.
It's amazing the amount of incredible mods are out there... makes buying a new video game seem like a waste of money. (...although I would buy a Scumhead game, pay back for such an amazing mod.)
There's a sequel to one of the most epic TCs for Doom‽ 👍😲
And the original got a remastered release that fixed all of the problems Mr. Icarus brought up in his review, and it has a new ambient soundtrack. Free on Steam!
But no _FILMMAKER,_ OST for Shrine II..
creepy yet unique
Uh, Project Warlock! That's what this mod reminds me of, visually. It's those sprites that stand out against the 3D environments. Black outlines and such. Like they were never meant to be in a 3D space.
It's a cool look, by the way
That's the exact vibe I get. Definitely going to check this out.
There are actually two secrets that you can get the mortar in before the Gates of Seraphim chapter. Actually, there are ways to obtain pretty much every weapon several levels early if you look around.
The art style really reminds me of old RPG Maker horror games like OFF or Yume Nikki
Your use of the word mercifully is merciless!
The mod's intro gave me strong Dark Souls flashbacks.
so the axe is named dy-lon...
cus it spits hot fire
pagb666 just finished the whole mod and now you uploaded the video of it
Fun fact; the Hula Hoop boss is actually a Throne Angel. To quote Hellhorror.com's article on angel varieties;
The Thrones serve as God’s chariot and "dispense his judgment" to carry out his desires for us. The Thrones are considered "heavenly governors, attempting to strike a balance between matter and spirit, good and bad."
I took the time to thumbs up for noting a weapon warms-up instead of cooling down.
13:36 So some medieval depictions of Angels had them as a set of Hoops with eyes centered around a Flame. You sir are fighting a Biblically accurate angel
I just got done playing this and I am so happy it got a sequel
6:53 Nxxxxxs: 1000 ways to get paid.
@19:44 I will always appreciate the use of Raul Julia Bison memes *chef kiss
So the hiveslayer is the hive hand with its primary and secondary reversed and no ammo regen
That was my main influence, yeah.
Originally it was just a hitscan weapon
Also finally a bug gun that doesn't suck
Give it a reload animation of you consuming the maggots for hp.
@@ghoulbuster1 lol yeah that might be a good idea, there's always that bit in FPS I don't like where you're pinned down with 13 HP desparately scrounging for health. It would need to be balanced though, a lot of bugs for a small amount of HP. And a potential problem might be people not using the bughand as a weapon, instead using it as a health reservoir.
I like how in Death Fortold (a Doom 4 in Doom 2 mod) you can glory kill / siphon grenade enemies for a bit of HP back. I haven't played Shrine 2 yet so I don't know what the balance is like. The first one like Icarus said, was a bit too generous with its lines of health armour and ammo.
@@mengo329 Hivehand was the MVP of Half Life tho, it's the only safe way of killing hgrunts on hard difficulty, and the regen meant that running out of ammo just slowed the fire rate.
Angels in popular culture: *a baby with wings*
Angels in the Old Testament: 13:32
The Hula Hoop boss that turns into a burning angel is actually a Bible reference because that's what it said angels look like at one point
11:13~ I dont know why but those errant fireballs going upwards in sort of circle pattern makes me think of the Madness series from Newgrounds (and specifically how hands work in that universe.) X3
The gladiator arena goes by a LOT easier if you have the mortar and you use one of the damage multiplier powerups. You can flatten the big guys in just a few seconds each.
Thanks for covering this. Very interesting. Will be putting this full conversion mod at the top of that particular to do list.
Take a shot every time he says "mercifully"
10/10 game lets me pet the demon doggos i summon.
Wow first civvie then decino then you I love today
that moment when a mod for a 20+ yr old game is better than many current AAA game
half way through the video i forgot that this was a doom mod
Nice texture work.
That hollahoop was an Ezekiel's Wheel.
Looks great. I enjoyed the first one for free on Steam, although it was a bit linear and the secrets were easy to find and not nearly enough of them. Recent Doom conversions have been great! Including Blade of Agony. Takes us old schoolers back!
This looks very interesting.
The hulahoops are an actual angel described in dantes inferno. They are called thrones if I remember correctly
The lighthouse also emits a tune this is actually part of a numbers station.
Very satisfying review. I'd like to the Aliens mod that is pictured on the back of the Doom: Tricks of the Doom Programming Gurus book.
Wasnt in the original Shrine that Icarus just ignored the whole "You need to start without weapons, every level starts with a weapon drop..." the reason to why he thought it was so short and easy.... That's really half-assed imo
18:36 Hey, I've seen those yeti things in EarthBound!
9:33 "While crossing..." Unintended pun?
that hive slayer is defo inspired by the hive hand in half life 1 lol, even shoots bugs and has the same firing modes (slow fire that homes in on target vs full auto non-homing)
Fun fact: the game is now it's own game!
The wall patterns in this game hurt my eyes!!!!
The hoola hoops may be the way Angels were depicted? I know from memes.
A crucifix specifically has an image of Jesus affixed to it. Without, it's just a cross.
the pod bombs look like kelp shakes
You can get bloodrail earlier by one of the secrets
Yes I’ve been waiting for you to do this episode for weeks
13:36 old testament angels be like:
I like the part where you fought the camel 🐫 lol 😂
I enjoyed Shrine 2, but I have to say that I wasn't fond of the levels from chapter 3 to the end. It's not that they are bad, but they are too short. They go like "kill ten enemies, get key, exit". Overall it was a fun mod.
Now we're talking! Fascinating. Hope that it will be put on Steam, too. I'd pay for it.
The hand drawn art style reminds me a bit of Marathon.
3:36 that gun would trigger trypophobia (the fear of many holes in one spot or something like that)
