I graduated from youtube univ
Transmissions have always seemed to me to be much too arcane to ever consider tackling. I have always understood that they are incredibly unforgiving, and very dependent on absolutely perfect reassembly. But watching this video, Shane has done such a thorough job walking the class through this process that it has almost completely cured me the fear of not knowing what I don't know.
So many tutorials or explanations leave so much out leaving me scrambling for an answer and unwilling therefore unable to proceed unless and until I can get more clear guidance. Well, not this one. This one holds nothing back, but doesn't drone on anything.
Truly masterful teaching. 🙏

Good video! At the 12 minute mark - I had exactly this happen, full-throttle on a 210whp bike, 3rd and 4th made friends with each other and decided to work at the same time... It locked the rear wheel for about 2 seconds at which point 4th gear shattered allowing it to start rolling again in 3rd gear and gently got it the 2 miltes to the house safely. Ended up milling larger grooves for oversized snap rings, back-cutting all the gears, shimming everything to be "just right", and rebuilding it myself since OEMs can't even get it right. Bike now makes 260 whp and shifts better than it did new. Do it right! 50 cent snap ring tried to kill me and very easily could have airconditioned an engine that costs more than most 1000cc sport bikes do.

Good video. I'm not a professional mechanic but at 26:00 ish, I would have used a dial indicator instead of a "drop" indicator as demonstrated in the video. The dial indicator is more accurate and doesn't drop into and get caught on splines and what-not if you set it properly.
In my world (machine shop) a "drop" indicator is used for primarily checking depths not the run-out of a shaft.
I think I get what your saying but a bit confused on the terminalogy your using. I did a quick search and saw dail vs test indicator. I see the dial and drop as the same indicatior. I think your referencing the indicator that would lay sideways on the shaft? In a typical shop it would be common to have dial (plunger) indicators but not likely the test (sideways) indicator. I like your idea (and thank you).

Thanks Shane ! Great vid I could only add that with the gearbox inspection u didnt include the kickstarter idle gear which is on the other side of the case but still on the transmission shaft. On my 1988 kx 125 it has somehow welded the kickstarter idle gear to the shaft. Im thinking about getting it machined up or replacing it . the parts are getting hard to find.

hello i´d like to ask about the washers at 6:41. I saw washers like this, but they has inner tooths and three outer tooths. Can you please explain their function to me? I can´t get it.. only thing i know is, that the washer can not rotate and this is realized by the inner tooths..so why i need another three outter tooths?

I have a kfx400 I bout it there's was nothing wrong with it but I was riding it the other day and I went to Frist 2 3 4 5 then went back to frist now it wont shit out 1 it just rebs wide open and my pipe gets red hot what do I need to do to fix

I got a vulcan 1500, ran out of gas on the interstate on a down hill, tried to shift to N to avoid any damage but something happened and (currently) I get a grinding or shuttering sound when no load is being applied (so just clutch pulled in or in between (that brief moment between) acceleration / engine braking). Does not pop out of gear under load or when shifting just a shuttering sound when no load. Does it sound like a sliding gear dog issue?

hi there. I need your help. I recently opened my crank case to replace the bearings. the bearings were CN , but I replaced them with C3 ones. will that effect the engine? because I am now facing a wired roughness when the bike runs. please help
That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. He is overseas training techs until the 19th but is trying to schedule time each day to answer techline orders still.
