Di Marzio Ultra Jazz vs Fender Stock Pickups

- Comparing the stock pickups on the Made in Japan Geddy Lee Jazz Bass with the Di Marzio Ultra Jazz pickups. These pickups offer a double configuration: series and parallel and I've covered both in the demo.
Series: Coils in each pickup are connected to each other, much like the pickup in a Precision Bass
Parallel: The two coils aren't connected to each other but simply connected to ground and the output signal, resulting in a thinner sound.
I used 500k volume pots with the Di Marzio pickups, as recommended by Di Marzio themselves, as the pickups have more of a darker tone and the higher resistance value helps retain some of the brightness. 250k pots were used with the stock pickups

Great playing and demo!!! I really like the Ultra Jazz pickups!!!!!
Thanx pal! Content as always great!
Thank you so much!
Ultra Jazz have such a massive mid scoop- not a fan. Thanks for the demo!
DiMarzio makes the best Jazz Bass pick ups.
Excellent video
Thank you for this

You mean these:

Sounds good, I changed mine out for a set of EMG Jazz pickups and a BTC control and will never give it up!
What would you say sound wise what do you live ke more about the EMG pickups? Also are the passive?
@@Idontlikethisever I like the sharp, crisp tone of the EMG active pickups, plus the BQC control gives a little more output as far as volume and tone.(and all the EMG pickups have solderless connects between the pickups and eq. Try them!
Which set did you get. I'm always been an EMG guy but haven't decided which ones to get. I wanna pair those with a bassmods preamp
@@josegalindo1262 I have an EMG TWX at the bridge, an EMG TWR at the neck position and the EMG BTC control with 18 volt circuitry. Both pickups can be humbuckers or single coil. The one at the bridge, in single coil mode, it is closer to the bridge, and the one at the neck, in single coil mode, is closer to the neck. If that all make since.
The Fenders are more even and fuller to my ears. Except for Rush, I would use the Di Marzio. Thanks for the demo!
A little more warmth and highs from the Fender but the Dimarzios have much more output and bass in series mode. I had these Ultras back in 99 but don't remember them being this hot. Probably because I had another bass with the Model Js which are also pretty hot and bassy. You should do a video comparing these to the Model Js. You should also review the Custom Shop 60's Jazz pickups. Those have been my choice lately.
Its because he put 500 pots.
Are they split coil? Do they not hum individually?
Hi. I noticed you also demoed the Duncan SJB-3 set. How would you say the Ultra Jazz set compares to the quarter pounders? Thanks for your time and great playing as well.
Thank you! I'd say that the Ultra Jazz is more "fine tuned" and has better dynamics. It's overall more focused as a pickup but still has quite a beefy sound since it's a split coil. The SJB3 is a very loud pickup, with tremendous attack and loads of low end but overall has a blurrier, and dirtier sound
ultrajazz bridge pu sounds a bit harsh, maybe a model J dimarzio would suite an even closer to the bridge pickup better ?
I have a Fender J bass and have thought about buying these on and off for years. Can someone help me though? When I buy these and have a tech install them, do I ask the tech to do Series or Parallel? Sorry for the dumb question as my I still have a difficult time understanding what that means and how it affects any humbucking qualities.
They usually wire them in series, that's the standard. I'd go with that, as parallel can sometimes be too thin sounding
I bought these pickups in my custom built Jazz bass to replace the Fender AVRI that were in there. I wanted noiseless pickups but still keeps some of the single coil characteristics. I must say, I was very disappointed. Not that these are bad pickups but not for me. I will say that they are bright and have a punch low end but a very sterile scooped midrange. I definitely prefer the AVRI's growly midrange as these are very clean. If you like slapping than these are great pickups for that but for fingerstyle rock and funk, the sound kind of disappears and even boosting the mids on my GK amp didn't really help.
Did you wire them in series or parallel? I find they are quite thin if wired in parallel, but have a nice clear and well-balanced sound in series. Not as much punch or midrange as the model Js, but still nice enough
@@OliverTobyn I wired them in Series. They were too scooped to my liking. The Model Js are too dark, even with 500k pots. If you turn up the treble to compensate, they sound kinda strange.
I think vintage spec Alnico 5 pickups are my favorite. The Fender American vintage are my favorite set and they come stock in the Geddy Lee.
Dimarzio Ultra Jazz: Splitcoil in disguise :D
I have someone do my installs for me. Need I specify which way I want them wired? Are there instructions supplied with the product to show wiring both ways? Sorry if the question sounds elementary but that type of work is foreign to me! Thanks.
No worries, we are all ignorant at some point :)
There are some instructions on the website if I'm not mistaken, but I honestly find the parallel setting pretty useless, the series sounds much fuller.
Just specify you want them wired in series, and the guy should know how to do it
@@OliverTobyn thank you kind sir! So........if I'm being snoopy(no, not the dog) I should ask him how he has wired my other basses in the past?!?!?!? I have been looking for a replacement pickup for my MIJ GL bass.....great video, new subscriber as of now!
@@shawnray2941 that would depend on which pickups you have installed, not all of them have the series/parallel option. Each Di Marzio pickup has two coils inside (like a Precision Bass pickup) which can be wired in both ways. But traditionally Jazz pickups are single coils which can be wired one way only
@@OliverTobyn I'm tracking....and I read that. He has installed Fender Classic Vibes on another jazz I have so, no need to ask! Thanks brother. I appreciate your answering, patience and expertise. I hit you on FB.....lol
hey man😁Is the wire of ultra jazz humcancelling by two wire (left and righ or up&down). i have a duncan stk-j
2, it is up&down humcancelling, but it's tone like hotter than fender stock. So i wander if the ultra J is seried like p bass? after all, had you tried to combine one hum
j with single coil j, i am curious about this couple.😝😝
Yes the Ultra Jazz is wired just like a P bass in series mode, and it's hum canceling. The hot stack is different, it has two coils stacked onto each other
thank you man!
sorry for another question, did you use two switches to control both pickup separately or ones for them?I gonna load a ultra j on my bass now
Do you use new flats or round Rotos in this video?
Round Rotos, I forgot to mention it. They are a few months old so they aren't as bright
Hi are you using b500k for vol pots and 0.033 cap?
250k for the stock and 500k for the Di Marzio. 0.047 cap
Wohhaaa. Have you tried 250k in there? Maybe the highs can be tamed
Found the one! 500k linear pots for volumes, 250k log pots for tone and 0.033 cap search is over!
Awesome video. Very useful. I was consindering these for passive replacement but don't think they are as good in passive mode.
I used them in a mod with Fender's deluxe active jazz bass preamp back around 20 years ago and it had such a thick & punchy tone. But now in a passive setting, they somehow sound really thin.
I had kind of the same experience. The midrange is almost non existant in these pickups.
How do you switch between parallel and serial connection?
I wanted to use a couple of push/pull pots but they were too big to fit comfortably in the cavity, so I rewired the connection first in series then in parallel. Best to use a 4PDT switch in my opinion
Interesting. Maybe once I build this option on a less expensive J Bass.
With a couple you mean one 4PDT for each split coil pickup?
@@szrnkabela no each push pull pot was DPDT, and you would need one for each pickup. With a 4PDT switch you can switch both pickups at the same time
@@OliverTobyn I wouldn’t open the cavity on a MIJ GL either, humanity thanks you! You seem to know your wiring, I have a 4 hole MJT JB, looking at a set o f DP123’s. Is the ultra jazz 4 lead like the DP123?
Excuse me, if I conect electronic in parallel or serial mode does de sound change??? Id like to put some ultra jazz in a Squier j 70 classic vibe but I Can't Feel any diference. Thanks so much!
Yes, in parallel it sounds thinner, less bass and mids and lower volume overall. In series more punch and midrange
Are Jazz basses normally set as Series or Parallel?
Careful, Jazz Basses normally have single coils, which are wired in parallel. In this case each pickup has two coils, which can also be wired in series and parallel which is what I demonstrated here. Each pickup was wired both in series and parallel to itself (because of the two coils) but always in parallel to the other one
@@OliverTobyn oh I see. That’s very interesting. The coils themselves are wired parallel or in series, not the bass. The bass is wired in parallel.
I'd definitely take any Precision bass over the best jazz bass... I don't get the jazz sound... It's kinda of weaker
I agree, I never really got it either. You can play a little faster on the skinny neck though...
Di marzio are Humbukers? Or single?
They are linear humbuckers, like a single coil but split into two smaller coils
a lot of high end definition and sting. and more presence
Parallel mode is absolute rubbish, Dimarzio series all the way.
The dimarzios in series sound good, in parallel they sound like shrill dog shit.
The org pickups are pretty good.
Adjust the volumes of the two to the same output and there will be almost no difference between the two pickups under consideration, this demo makes no sense done this way..The ear will always prefer the one with the loudest volume!
I disagree, there is a difference. Fenders have more balance and mids, Dimarzio, more scooped and hifi
The Fenders sound so much better.
Madò i fender stock secondo me sono i migliori D: (DE GUSTIBUS)
Male non sono, e non mi dispiacciono tutto sommato. Trovo solo che siano poco cicci, infatti mi ritrovo sempre ad alzare le basse sui 200hz che è dove peccano di più
@@OliverTobyn Infatti amp (fisico o digitale) abbastanza obbligatorio.. Non a caso lo chiamano basso elettrico :3
Sounds like a ukulele
Hard to compare when half the sound you hear is direct sound from the strings and not the amp.
Adding an amp would make it a demo of pickups + that particular amp instead of just the pickups
It's the whole freaking point. Listening to the pickups themselves.
