  • A test of 28 different colored pencil brands to see which had the best and worst white pencil! Brands tested include Prismacolor Premier, Faber-Castell Polychromos, Caran d'Ache Luminance & Pablo, Tombow, Crayola, Cra-Z-Art, ColorIt, Marco Raffine, Koh-i-Noor Polycolor, Artist's Loft, Prang, Staedtler, Sargent Art and more!
    I tested how well each pencil colors on black paper-how bright of a white they get, and how good of a gradient they lay down. Based on these results I picked my 3 best, 3 honorable mentions and 3 worst white pencils for coloring. There were some surprises-both good and bad!

    I think there might be some user bias sticking the Prismacolors into the top 3. The Caran D'Ache Pablo has both a nicer gradient and a more even colour by the look of your swatches.

    Thanks for another informative video I kinda discovered blending with a white pencil on my own accidentally and I use it sometimes more than a colorless blender due to the fact that the blender pencil does more of pushing the pigment deeper into the paper than mellowing the color out. Some information on Bruynzeel pencils. Bruynzeel pencils is owned by Sakura, the company that makes GellyRoll pens and Pigma Micron pens.The Bruynzeel pencil that you tested is from the Super Sixties set which are the same pencils as Marco Raffine. The Bruynzeel Design pencils are the same as Marco Renior pencils. But the Marco pencils are available in larger sets than the Bruynzeel,.

    • @ColoringBliss
      @ColoringBliss  Před 6 lety +3

      +Melissa Fisk, wow! Where did you find all that awesome information? Thanks.

    • @melissafisk5941
      @melissafisk5941 Před 6 lety +4

      I actually found out when I was poking around the internet, researching the Marco Renoir pencils before I bought them. The Marco Renoir pencils have the same numbering, font, barrel and core as the 48 (largest) set of Bruynzeel Design , plus of course, the Renoir pencils come with an extended amount of pencils, up to 100 ct. I got the Marco Renoir 100 ct set from Amazon. The Bruynzeel Pencils are marketed as more high end, with smaller more targeted pallets, with an upscale box on the Design pencils, its a sturdy cardboard box like the Caran d'Ache Luminance box, but has drawers with foam inserts with spots for each pencil, cradling them in the drawers. But, they are sourced from the same manufacturer of pencils as the Marco Renoir pencils. Also, the same goes for the Super Sixties set matching the colors, barrel and cores of the Raffine pencils, 44 of the 72 colors available in the Marco Raffine line and the set of 12 Marco metallic pencils, plus 2 graphite drawing pencils, a sharpener and eraser bringing the set up to 60 items in the Bruynzeel Super Sixties tin.

    • @ColoringBliss
      @ColoringBliss  Před 6 lety +5

      +Melissa Fisk makes me wonder if the China company Marco was copying the Sakura Bruynzeel company or are they indeed affiliated? Hmmmm. China has a habit of knocking off products.

    • @melissafisk5941
      @melissafisk5941 Před 6 lety +1

      The Bruynzeel pencils are now made in China, but still bear the Holland name on them because that's where Royal Talens, the original owner of Bruynzeel pencils, is from. I am guessing for some reason Sakura was allowed to keep the Holland name. Maybe because Holland is now a nick name/historical name for The Netherlands and not it's actual place name? The new pencils, made in China, are still widely available in The Netherlands and is still a favored local brand. They are the same pencils as the Marco pencils, as they are sourced from the same manufacturer in China. That particular manufacturer of pencils in China sources a lot of cheaper pencil sets (Raffines) that you see on Amazon. And, I suspect, the Crayola Escapes pencils are also re-branded Marco Raffines. Although, I haven't bought a set of Crayola Escapes to test this out since I have enough sets of cheaper color pencil sets, as I am sure a lot of us do..lol.
      It is not uncommon for a manufacturer of colored pencils to make them for more than one brand. I have tested and confirmed ,for myself, that Koh-I-Noor pencils are the same pencils as Blick Studio colored pencils from Dick Blick.
      ETA: Some of the Bruynzeel pencils sets are available on the Dick Blick website, and some of the Bruynzeel Design pencils are available as open stock.

    • @kabluey5971
      @kabluey5971 Před 6 lety +2

      Actually, Sukura acquired this with Royal Talens in 1991. They also own Rembrandt (as in oil paints, water colors and pastels) as well as many other brands. You can check their history on the website. The following is from Royal Talens website. (I always believe in giving credit where credit is due.) Check them out: www.royaltalens.com/en-gb/

    Thanks so much for this test...it is a much needed comparison. I had to laugh, because my "lists" were identical to yours, except for one...I switched the Prisma Premiere and the CD Pablo. I had been using Prismas since I was a teenager and first got started (I'm 60 now) and I always loved them passionately! However, when the company changed hands and the pencils I bought to replace my original set started to constantly and consistently break.( I put them in the microwave, I put them in the freezer..grrr)...my love affair was OVER. Yes, the intensity is nice...but I was spending twice what I would have before because of the unbelievable waste when the pencils would break. So...I switched and now have a set of Polychromos AND a set of Coloursoft. Yes...the rest of the Coloursoft pencils are as beautiful as the white..you will totally enjoy them. I have heard wonderful things about the Caran D'ache Lumi's....and although there is no way I can afford a full set (yea, right....waaaay out of my budget right now! lol) I think I WILL purchase one of the white pencils. I use white for so many things. Again...thank you for helping me to make that "white pencil" decision! lol God Bless!!! One of my favorite channels! (FYI....I still do USE my Prismas....when I color in books and need to take something with me, I know that I will get a nice result with the constant worry about accidentally breaking my loved Polychromos! I will continue to use them until I use them up. No need to waste a good colored pencil!

    Great comparisons. I'm planning to invest into the Polychromos. I don't like Prisma, they break too easily and I have had the leads fall out of the body of the pencil. I heard from another source that the Caran d Ache white was a great white pencil. I'll probably do what you said, invest into a small set of the Caran d Ache to get the white pencil.

    I would've picked the caran d' ache over the prismacolor. I don't like their waxy build up. Just my opinion.

      Yeah, I have a bunch of prismacolors. I like their pigmentation, but the waxy surface means a lot of work to blend them. Needs a solvent or a blending pencil and a lot of elbow grease.

    I have the Prismacolor Premier 132qty. I’ve been using Prismacolor for at least 20 years. I’ve had at least 3-4 sets. I want Caran d’Ache Luminance, Derwent Inktense and Faber Castel Polychromos. I really love watching your comparison videos. I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon/pencil.

    Damn I wish we had the prices you guys get in the US. Australia is very expensive in comparison except strangely the Luminance. Usually double unless I buy 150 set of Prismas from Amazon US where I pay a third of what we price them here. Then often add ridiculous postage. 😏 Can't wait for Amazon to come here in a few months.
    I have the Luminance and Prismas along with a few others you have and while Luminance is fabulous I have to say you guys are spot on saying for the price difference I'd go Prismacolor white. I've been using it as you did Jennifer to blend my colours for a while now and it's great isn't it?

    Oddly enough, I though of a good use for the low picks. If you use black cardstock or lay down some black gesso or chalkboard paint, you can use them to create a chalkboard effect. A layer of lighter color around the edges, and lettering or designs in the center. That translucent, rough quality would be perfect for it.

    Do you think that the Spectrum color blend didn't work so well is because its really to be used for blending and not over power the colors it is to blend? You should definitely do the blackest black of colored pencils.

    • @BeardedBarley1
      @BeardedBarley1 Před 3 lety

      I was thinking of asking the same thing but not just with spectrum. Obviously when how it lays down is poor quality, the softer white pencils won’t do so well for blending. And when it’s really creamy, it seems evident that blending it would be much easier. So maybe that’s why Prismacolor white is a goto for blending pencil colors. However, I know that when I use my prisma colorless blending pencil, it just doesn’t blend the colors as well as the white prisma pencil does though supposedly it would seem that the creaminess minus the color would be optimal. But it’s just not. So some discussion on blending with colorless blending pencils vs. white pencils might be enlightening.

    I'm surprised you didn't use the Derwent Drawing white, it's a very nice pencil. It almost feels like an oil pastel but I like it a lot for final highlights. Although it's very thick and soft, so you wouldn't want to use it for very fine details. The Luminance pencil is my pencil of choice for that. :)
