    In the very early 80's my live rig was 2 full JCM 800 stacks. Todays 800's have way more gain then I remember my original 800's had. The first 800's gain was way closer to the SV20H in this video.
    I think there's a myth about old Marshall amps- they weren't distortion monsters, they were just plain loud.

    • @donadams5094
      @donadams5094 Před rokem +7

      Exactly. We all needed sd1/ds1s... modded marshalls wasn"t really an option. Basic marshall and a basic boss maxed on output, low on drive, was how we rocked. Even my jubilees don't sound as gainy as videos of the jube reissues do.

      My 1983 jcm 800 has nowhere near the amount of gain the reissues have. It's more of a crunch amp. Great for ac dc, it also does a great van halen 1 (if your ears can take it) with the volume cranked, but it never really gets beyond that. Definitely not going to give you any sort of metal tone without a pedal.

    The SV20 is my favorite of the bunch. The gainer amps sound a bit congested to me and can’t get as clean as the SV20. There’s always a compromise when gain is added to the classic plexi circuit.

    I'm so glad andertons are featuring out of their fender-esc amps. Given they said all these amps where given, I'm sure it opened their eyes to what rock and roll (post 70s) was all about! One thing I can say all these high gain amps are different animal with just a few overdrive or boost pedals (most folks can't even gun 20 watts in most settings) or putting them through a power soak, it really opens up them up at comfortable levels! Pick up any tube screamer (the bugera vintage clone is an awesome cheap option) or boss sd1! Given we don't see much of raber or rob, the high gains tones are a sight for sore eyes or I should says ears

  • @corpse-in-orbit
    @corpse-in-orbit Před rokem +8

    In case you guys are interested: "JCM800" did indeed come from a license plate, but there's more to it. Those amps were originally released in the mid/late ’70s as the Master Model Lead (2203 for 100 watts, 2204 for 50), but they flopped, because people expected the master volume to give them automatic cranked Plexi tones, not a new sound altogether. Jim Marshall believed in the design, though, so after a few years of the Master Model not doing so well, he decided that it should be re-released with a whole new name and self-consciously marketed to hard rockers and punks - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, all them sorts. And with the new name and reputation, the 800 became the New, Scary, Not Your Daddy's Marshall, and all was well.

    I think everything here sounded really good but if I had to pick my favourite here it’s the Victory with the Friedman Pink Taco a close second. I like the extra highs that cut from the Victory and it kinda kills me because as a Smallbox owner, I like to see my brand win. I live in Canada though and Friedman has fabulous customer service even here in Canada and it’s hard for Victory to match that level of customer service due to geography alone. But I love my Smallbox , I love that Dave Friedman himself has answered every single question I have sent to customer service, including asking for more detail on a crazy complicated pedalboard question of all things. I wouldn’t change allegiance for the world. There are all winners here though, every amp sounds really usable to me.

    I am playing the SV20H with my Who Tribute Magic Buzz with a 2x12 DV Mark Cabinet. I changed the speakers with 2 Jensen Neo Tornado that tame the high end perfectly. For Effects and Master Volume purposes I am using a Line6 Pod Go (4cable method). This way I can turn up the Amp Volume to 8 and use the Volume Knob on the Pod as a Master. It sounds truly great. Sometimes you have to try things out. At first I thought it was ridiculous to have an effects loop in an amp like this. But it is perfect. I use the Pod only for boost, Delay, Reverb and Fuzz purposes. Works perfect. I am a big fan of this amp. Perfect for classic rock.
    The preamp gain is most of the time enough for me.
    I have 3 Marshalls from the 60s at my house that are my absolute favorite Amps, but since this little sucker only weighs 9 kilo (and the cabinet 12 kilo) there is no real reason to use the other amps. Of course they sound a little different, a little more growl, more deep end, but on the whole the SV20 is almost perfectly the character of the old amps.

      I've got the Sheriff 25 running into to 2x12 Victory creamback cab and it's killer! The only soud that's hard to dial in is nice clean tone, because it's a real amp and you need to be at ridiculous volumes to get a nice clean sound from it. My neighbours gave me noise complaints. Worth every penny. I use it with an Orange BHinds Terror, which is also a great amp.

    • @burt2800
      @burt2800 Před rokem

      @TybudX Really, about the clean tone? Doesn't the master volume do the trick? Was thinking of getting the 100w version, especially for loads of headroom to use pedals with. Only for rehearsals, though.

    • @TybudX
      @TybudX Před rokem

      @@burt2800 It's just the reality of "that" clean sound. The Sheriffs are stilll wired like old amps. They need to be wide open to get that nice glassy sound. You can get all the sounds at lower volumes than a typical Marhsall but there is only so much a master volume can do. If you have a decent volume pedal that doesn't roll off high end or a multi effects box in the loop you should be good to go.
      I wish I'd bought the 100w one sometimes, but I don't play live anymore and I don't think I can write it off on my taxes. Maybe I'll sell a few things and get a good attenuator.

    If you crank the marshall past 3-4, you wont get more volume. it hits the maximum dB there. everything else is introducing gain in the power section. Also the volume pot has a bright cap. So between 6 and 7 on the Sc20 or sv20, you start to have less effect from the bright cap and the tone will sound less shrill.

    • @VintageRadius
      @VintageRadius Před rokem +2

      Yeah that’s the thing with most Marshalls, they want to be loud. More so than the Friedmans that do want to be loud too but manage better tones at lower volume.

      This x 1000! Old Marshalls, and their newer reissues, are built to be CRANKED. The power amp distortion is part of the sound, and it thickens the sound as the compression and collapse of the amp begins and the bright cap begins to fade out. You have to run the masters on these, even the JCM 800s and Jubilees, at 6-7 to start getting the goods.

    The Pink Taco gain structure is a 3 way switch I dont think they explored all 3 settings in this video just the high gain. There is a lower gain setting which takes you more into the vintage Marshall gain territory, it is certainly more hot rodden JCM800 in style but on the lower setting you can back the gain off and go for a more vintage type of sound.

From what I understand it is basically Marshall's version of a modded JCM800. It's been my favorite amp that I hope to own one day. :)
    It would be interesting to do a "hot rodded Marshall" comparison with the Silver Jubilee, the Sheriff hot rod mode, the Pink Taco, and a few other amps. I believe the Bogner amps are basically modded Marshall amps, and I know Orange isn't based on a Marshall (as far as I know), but to me they seem to still have that "British" tone to them but with more bass and mid-range giving them a bit fuzzier drive sound.
