Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. While they don't class themselves as a metal band, they don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog mayhem to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

They originally all had similar maid outfits but over the years they have evolved to fit their individual personalities and tastes. Miku, the band's founder, who worked at a maid cafe and came up with the idea of hard rocking band of maids still wears a traditional maid outfit as that is what she likes. Akane is an amazing drummer as you will discover if you continue to listen to them. Freedom, live, is the only official YT video with a drum solo, but try Shambles - MV, or Influencer - MV or From Now On - MV, and listen to what she does.

From what I've heard about the lyrics of this song: Even though Band-Maid's primary lyricist is Miku (Rhythm Guitarist, Primary B/U vocalist), the lyrics for "Hate" were written by Saiki (Lead Vocalist). The explanation that I heard is that a friend of hers was going through an abusive relationship, so she wrote the song to the guy who was treating her friend badly.
As you discover more Band-Maid, you will come to see that their music is consistently awesome.
    Saiki - Lead Vocals
Miku - Rythm Guitar, B/U Vocals, Lead Vocals, Primary Lyricist & Founding Member of Band-Maid
Kanami - Lead Guitar, Primary Music Composer
    MISA - Bass
    Akane - Drums
They all have stage persona's/nicknames too (that I'll let other fans mention).
There's that famous saying "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link." BAND-MAID HAS NO WEAK LINK.

They started out all wearing similar maid outfits. Over the years they have slowly evolved to what they wear now based on their personalities. Their catalog includes some instrumentals, acoustic versions of the electric songs and a few where the backing vocalist sings lead (she also sings pop songs on a side project - Cluppo).

Thank you for reacting to BAND-MAID. Like many others have said they play and mix many different genres of music to create their own style.
And as you suspected they have had some of their songs in anime, I have listed them below.
🔸"Carry on living" ending for Quiz Tokiko-san (2017).
    🔸"Glory" ending for Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS eps 71-95 (2017).
🔸"Sense" opening for Platinum End (2021), you might want to be a little careful with this one if you react to it, I have heard some reactions have been blocked, I think the anime studio has some kind of licensing for this song, but I could be wrong because there are reactions still up for this for a long time.
🔸"Different" opening for Log Horizon: Destruction of the Round Table (2021).
🔸"Shambles" ending for Kengan Ashura Season 2 (2023).
    🔸"Protect You" ending for Grendizer U (2024).
🔸And probably one of the best anime lol, their own anime music video for their song Unleash!!!!!
Putting all that aside though they are truly a unique, fun, uplifting, talented group of musicians with some of the best music IMHO that I have heard in many years.

The background singer and rhythm guitarist is the one you pointed out is wearing the classic maid outfit. She formed the band, and came up with the maid theme. She used to work at a maid cafe and thought it would be a good juxtaposition to have cute maids playing hard rock/punk. In the early days the drummer and lead guitarist wore more classic outfits, but that changed for the drummer pretty quickly. The singer's outfit is more like the hostess at the cafe. The base player went straight to all black outfits and explained that she was an assassin maid. She's also known as the Barefoot Assassin.

Band-Maid is the "Guilty Pleasure" you need not feel any guilt over.
Together for 11 years, they have a huge, deep catalog of music, ranging through punk, pop, metal, prog, fusion, and combining touches of rap and jazz with hints of Broadway show tunes and the occasional dip into folk metal, Band-Maid can be hard to describe as their music goes all over the place. ...all the interesting places.
I've seen them live twice: their goal is to entertain you and have you walk out of the venue with a big smile on your face. They write incredibly catchy tunes and perform them with virtuosic skill. The two vocalists write the lyrics. The lyrics for "Hate?" were written by Saiki, the lead vocalist, but vocalist/ rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato writes lyrics for many of Band-Maid's songs. Everyone in the band is a star.
Just go to their YT channel and pick songs at random: they're all good.

I heard them do this version live in Minneapolis, on a smaller stage, last year. Standing ten feet in front of Kanami (the lead guitarist). It sounded like this, and more.
This performance you watched was from a few months later, the finale to their Tenth Anniversary tour. The bass-guitar middle of the song is built out for live performances, relative to the studio version. HATE? is probably about the 40th best BAND-MAID song, on its own. Obviously, still awesome, but it is incredibly elevated by their live performances. They played this version of the song at Lollapalooza in '23, also.
You'll get lots of other great advice for songs, in the comments. But if you'd like to try a music video, with a slightly different version of their sound, try "Choose Me". Or perhaps "Different", an actual anime song. "From Now On" is an instrumental. Or for young, early period BAND-MAID, at their maid-iest, the excellent "The Non-Fiction Days".
Or for another live performance, I strongly suggest LIVE versions of "Real Existence" or "Puzzle". The joy you can see in their performances is real, I saw it myself. They love what they do.
If you dig a little further, you'll likely discover that Japan is crawling with high level female rock and metal bands. E.g., Lovebites (who were among the crowd at the concert you just watched), Hanabie (who are touring the US with Jinjer, next month), Nemophila, Gacharic Spin, Hagane, Bridear, NEK!, East of Eden, among many others.

@@NvrNrml For me, their positivity is a big part of their appeal. The angst and anger that dominated rock for so long burned me out on it. Band-Maid made rock fun again. Even this song feels fun even though the lyrics are so scathing.
That said, Miku’s lyrics are kind of inscrutable, so be prepared for that. She writes poetically, uses a ton of references and loves word play, so subtitles will always fail you. A lot of their older translations are also pretty bad. They’ve improved recently, but you’d still need a ton of footnotes and stuff to do them justice.
I usually recommend that people just ignore their lyrics to pay more attention to the interesting music writing, until they’re ready to do a deep dive.

    Welcome to Band Maid 🤘🏽
You’re going to get lots of recommendations and even more superlatives. One undeniable fact is the Maids have one of the most diverse musical catalogs in the business. That means there’s a song for every music fan; however, not everyone could possibly love everything they do.
Please give it at least 10-12 songs before you make any final judgments.
“Hate?” is from their 2021 Unseen World album (new release coming next month). It’s an example of their dense, chaotic, complex music. Other ones like this?
    “Black Hole”
However, these musicians deliver wildly different music. Here are some choices for you to consider:

Constant pausing, inane comments, pausing the solos! An amazing performance ruined by a terrible reaction.

Apologies, still new to the react space trying to learn!
Any tips or suggestions (specifically on my "insane comments") would be greatly appreciated!

How much can you chopped a great performance with an excess of annoying pauses?😕

@@COTTERO apologies my reaction rubbed you the wrong way, I use the pauses to say what I am thinking without it clashing with the instrumentals.
Still a work in progress on this channel but I will look to improve. But hey, if this isn’t your thing there’s always other styles of reactions no need for hostility 😂

@@NvrNrmlit’s your channel, pause when you want to. If people want to watch it uninterrupted that’s what Band-Maid’s channel is for. The only suggestion I have is making sure you back up a little after pausing to keep a little continuity…it’s easy to miss things with the Maids because they are very tricky lol.
