I have some kayak friends, a father and son. The dad has significant vision loss but still wants to kayak. They were outfitted with voice activated handsfree waterproof radios with headsets attached to their helmets by the VA. He follows his son who helps guide him down the river. They say they work great and it helps them communicate while chilling the whitewater. I think its a great idea.

No need to spend thousands. The two best radio models out there are both under $300 for a pair. This is probably the best _budget_ Walkie-Talkie on the market. Current pricing about $55.oo for a pair, on average. Range surprisingly good, even in crowded urban centers. (Though, if it's over a mile or so away, clarity becomes a bit of an issue. But you should still be able to make out what the other person is saying.) And, love the fact that when the rechargeable batts. get low on power, you can swap in 3AA alkaline batts. if you need to use it NOW, and simply don't have time to throw them on a charger. Good IP rating too. And, with a power-bank with multiple ports, all you need is separate current gen. phone charging cables to charge up both your phone and your radio.
Not too many drawbacks. Hope you like Hunter Orange because that's it as far as color goes. Understandable on a budget radio. Pick one color to keep the price down. And, since these aren't made for the Military, H.Orange makes sense. They're just a bit heavy compared to the competition. But Lightweight + Durable = *$$$*. Wish the clip attachment was better. But a very minor disadvantage. Honestly if you want Walkie-Talkies made for adults that are *good* then this is likely your best option without spending too much.

Attaching foam to them to keep them afloat just in case they end up in the water is a smart move for sure, and I like how you brought up that one person could have one and another person could have the other one while they’re running a drop or running Safety down river. Definitely a good thing to have no doubt

Downside is no waterpoof speaker/mic connection, also no duel band monitoring (Both of which are good if you just wanna pocket the radio on your PFD and not have to deal with it). Also no VHF capability for marine channels if you're dealing with off shore.

Yeah that’s why these are more affordable then the higher end Motorola ones these work great for just basic kicking around fishing and kayaking thanks for the great points

No I don’t think there’s a way to turn off the call beep

@@WadeHarrison Try turning off the radio, and holding volume up/down, and turn it back on. Some use up for Rodger beep, and down for key beeps.
