  • @beauprezze
    @beauprezze Před 26 dny

    I've ordered the same setup, but which products do you use for the clear coat itself? When i want to clearcoat my forged carbon which composited should i buy? I only know that it has to be UV resistant. But is it a epoxy clearcoat that you use or what should i buy? Don't find any products on easycomposites for clearcoating. Just for filling pinholes :/ thanks in advance!

    Hi! Did you just sand with 240grit and call it a day? I would have figured there would be stages into the finer grit, but if that's all you need that's fine with me.
    Looking to clear coat (to protect from the sun) my Celica Spoiler. I'm hoping 2K rattle cans will be good enough coping all the steps you took.

    • @mod.ts76
      @mod.ts76 Před 4 měsíci

      240 grit allows for mechanical adhesion. The quality of his finish is mostly achieved through the thorough degreasing and spray booth indoors. Rattle cans should get you most of the way there, then you can polish out any impurities. 7 months later, so how did you do?

    is not the 240 sand paper to high? so no finish with 1500 or so before aplying clear coat?

    • @drrock5356
      @drrock5356 Před měsícem

      240 grit is likely the correct, or close grit to sand prior to clear coat. Like most coatings, clear coat needs a specific "tooth" size to bond too. Too course, like 60 grit, and you'll see the sanding scratches through the clear. To fine (like 1500 grit), and the sanding scratches are too small to fill and hold onto, and the clear coat will likely delaminate over time.
      All professional paint re-finishing systems specify the correct grit of sanding (both wet and dry) to use, prior to applying the coating.

    I just bought a 2022 gsxr. I am slowly putting gloss carbon fiber all over it but it has a ton of stock carbon fiber that’s isn’t gloss coated. I never would have thought to sand it. Could you let me know what you think? Should I do this even thought it’s matte finish currently, so that I can gloss them?

    • @CarbonWorkshops
      @CarbonWorkshops  Před 2 lety

      I can't see that being a problem. Sand a little, degrease and re clear coat 👍

    Can I do bike tank wrap & then put clear coat /lacquer on top of it to make it last longer without damaging.?

    • @drrock5356
      @drrock5356 Před měsícem

      Wrapping metal with real carbon fiber (not carbon fibber!) is problematic. Carbon fiber does not expand or shrink with temperature changes, but the metal underneath does. In the sun, the black carbon fiber can get up to 140+ degrees F, causing the metal tank to "grow". The carbon fiber won't move, so the laminate will shear (delaminate) from the tank over time.
      Keep the carbon fiber skinned tank at the same temperature, no problem. Expect then different galvanic potentials between the metal and carbon fiber will cause oxidation (unless you keep the carbon fiber skinned tank in a completely dry environment).

    Can the clear coat hide all the scratch marks from the 240grit sand paper? I always thought 400 grit is minimum. Sometime scratch marks still can be seen under the clear coat even thought I tried 400. Anyway to over come this issue? Tky

      2K polyurethane clear coats are actually clear rubber, and have good scratch resistance and impact strength. Scratches can often be buffed out, just like the sanding scratches.

    Do you think a similar result could be achieved with a spray can of 2k clear coat? I'd like to try this but I can't justify buying a whole compressor and spray gun for this. I've tried with 1k clear but the finish ends up too soft and scratches easily.
