    You're missing the rubber gasket that stops the beans from getting under the hopper. It's part of the reason why you had so many beans under it.

      The rubber gasket is mandatory ! Also, apply cleaning fundamentals www.baratza.com/clean-grinder-clean-cup/

      It's also probably part of the reason why it was still able to grind with the tabs broken off. The extreme amount of coffee particulate and beans in there was probably holding the burs in place slightly.

    there's a rubber gasket that sits on top of the burr holder - you need one of those!

    I just went through this and had my red tab at 11, it wouldn't dial at all. I came back and checked your video closer, put the tab at 5 and now we're golden. Thanks for being so positive all the time, Chris!

    Love that you love the Encore - Sooooooo many videos on high end stuff, but not alot (of quality) vids on Encore/Virtuoso. Also @ 9:00 - Welcome to Nerding Nirvana - when simplicity meets knowledge.

    You should totally make a video on upgrading your encore to the M2 Virtuoso burrs. The consistency difference is so good, its veeeery worth it for $35 and its a fun project taking apart the grinder.

      This upgrade changed my grind game

    • @VickiStokes
      @VickiStokes Před 2 lety

      Definitely a difference in grind. Espresso grind is perfect. It grinds faster too. Goes through the beans like a hot knife through butter.

    • @VickiStokes
      @VickiStokes Před 2 lety

      Yes. I thought going from my previous grinder to the Baratza Encore was a game changer. The upgrade to the Virtuoso burr showed me I had been missing. If you don't need to grind fine the Encore is great. But if you want espresso grind the Encore burr is great while the Virtuoso is off the chart.

    I just bought a encore for $85, which is a pretty sweet deal. The guy I was buying it from was super good about cleaning and had recently upgraded to the fellow ode. Even still, two and a half of the plastic tabs were broken off, thankfully the part's only $4.

      Good mill, but it has a weak point, and that is the grindstone holder, it has three little ears that even if you drop it on the kitchen counter, they break, they should improve that piece.

    Shortly after replacing my upper burr holder the main drive gear stripped out. Another part designed to break so the rest of the grinder can be repaired. It was a fun fix and cost $8 I think. I’ll be waiting for that video with in the year!

  • @khurtwilliams
    @khurtwilliams Před 4 lety +2

  • @NickVisel
    @NickVisel Před 4 lety +2

    It's amazing what a $4 piece will do. I buy these in bulk because they wear out a lot when you're switching between espresso and chemex grind settings, and you only want to pay shipping for a 1oz plastic piece once.

  • @VickiStokes
    @VickiStokes Před 2 lety

    I had issues with clogging after 8 months of use. Got to the point where it clogged and would not grind. Needless to say I was ticked. I mailed the Encore infor repair at ½ the price of the cost of the machine. Again I was steamed. I got it back and it was grinding coarse. Left voice mail and Facebook messenged Baratza support. The Facebook response clued me in to my user error. I did not properly snap the ring burr in place. Noticed my expresso grind was fast and much finer. Delighted about that. Got a call from Baratza support the next day. Explained my user error. The support person told me my grinder was under warranty for a year and I was reimbursed the cost for the repair. Explained the repair which was the paddle that pushes the beans had broken leading to my original issues. He also said they upgraded my burr to the one in the Virtuoso explaining why the expresso grind was so fine. This is what I call expert customer support. This company has a quality product that they support adding to the value. I got a quick tutorial from support on how often (usually once a month) and when to clean (when grinding slows). Watching videos like this shows the community support for this awesome brand. I am following Baratza and channels like this to educate myself on the product.

    When you do need new burrs: You can upgrade to the virtuoso lower burr, it's a harder steel and is even better than the already good encore set.

  • @hyubsu
    @hyubsu Před 4 lety +1

    This happened to me before. Snapped one of the 3 plastic tabs but the whole thing was still intact (unlike yours which split in half). It was so hard to spot if you didn't know there was supposed to be 3 tabs. The culprit was probably a piece of wood or rock since I used beans from a not so good source and didn't bother hand sorting.
    PS: As mentioned, you're missing a black rubber gasket which minimizes the beans from getting stuck under the hopper. It goes on top of the upper burr plastic.

    "Really uniform particle size" Yeah, but it's chunks.
    Nothing here I didn't know. What I was hoping for was a tip to make this grinder grind finer. There is an adjustment on the burrs that change the factory setting of coarse to fine, but it doesn't do much at all. I am not fond of this grinder. (Correction. I notice that the tabs on the burr holder in my machine are missing.)

    Now i want to go check but i am terrified to see what i will find. But if i am placing an order i might as well get the the replacement top burr and plastic ring its only$4 even though the burs are rated for 500 lb of coffee and if i am ordering i might as well get an A3 upgrade burr ok now it$50 look at the can of worms you opened.

    I came across you and your video series by chance as I was browsing through CZcams looking for the 'no-bra' challenge videos I'm doing a research paper on...
    As I liked that first video, I then subscribed to your channel, and immediately watched this next one, and upon finishing, I canceled my subscription, and fell back into the bored slumber from which I came, being that it was slightly more interesting than the meandering and repetitive ramblings of yet another CZcamsr who needs a course on editing.
    But more than that is my complete contempt for anyone who hold themselves to be an authority in their field of choice, then show, even proudly document, their incompetence and absence of understanding of the tools used in the performance of their profession.
    I own the same grinder, and have been in the 'specialty coffee' arena since its purchase in May of '21. I have completed the same actions as described in this video, though I diverge from what is obviously a' fix-it 'seminar, to one on 'proper maintenance and up-keep'.
    How does an experienced and award winning batista not notice something wrong way before the point shown in this video.
    Having the same grinder has given me the experience to say that I, a novice by any standard, having noticed a decrease in uniformity myself early on, educated myself through CZcams videos, took apart my grinder in much the same way shown here, with the dramatic difference being that mine was just a matter of routine maintenance, and yours being a matter of apparent ignorance, and the much more salient quality of apathy and laziness.
    Now I will get the usual onslaught of your true believers taking arms to defend you, but as someone who holds themselves out to be an authority in the field of Specialty Coffee, for someone looking for a reliable source for some of coffee's many sub-specialties, how could one rely on the information given if the source of bitterness comes from too small or too large of a grind setting, or just the result of too many 'fines' over too wide a spectrum due to improper maintenance.
    My Baratza Encore is a very nice grinder, built and sold by extraordinary people, whom I suppose, would rather have their products shown in a light held by a much steadier hand..
    And lastly, there is no need to be so verbose.. Edit, Edit, Edit..... Thx
