    You forgot to mention the Kyrandia series by Westwood. This game is extremely reminiscent of that series straight down to the dumping of bottles into a pond.

    My gosh, this is a game I haven't thought about forever. My brother and I used to rent this one repeatedly as kids, but I don't think we ever beat it. In fact, I think the mine carts might have always been our stopping point. Lol
    I should revisit this one! Great vid! Always enjoy your stuff!

    I have an old VHS tape of my uncle goofing-off with the video camera when he was 15 in 1994, and part of it shows his friend playing this game. Took me a while to figure out what it was.

    I recently got nostalgic for a Westwood game I own called Legend of Kyrandia, which is a trilogy of point-and-click adventure games. One thing I read is that Young Merlin started out as a SNES port of a Kyrandia game, which explains why it feels like a 90s PC game.

    • @JazGalaxy

      HUH. I never knew that. I like the idea of starting out a port and then being like l “this will never work” and making it a different game instead. That reminds me of my sketchbooks.

    I think one thing that isn’t mentioned is that there are no invincibility frames. So you can walk into an enemy or they walk into you and can drain your health from full to 0 in a couple of seconds.

    Love this game so much. It really creates its own atmosphere, and draws you in right from the start. It makes you think you're playing an animated cartoon, with the set pieces like the bug guarding the river bridge, complete with animations and voices recorded just for that one part.
    ...Then it kicks you in the face with some unreasonable difficulty like trying to work out how to get through the mine cart ride successfully. This did test our limits of frustration, but as a kid I just mapped out where the turns were on some paper, drew the optimal path, and then took it. And boom - at the next area, with a completely new set of graphics, music, and its own atmosphere.
    Sure nowadays you can go back and criticise elements of the design but almost no game survives that level of scrutiny. This game is a unique adventure - just be prepared for some super hard parts. It's mostly OK difficulty though.

    If someone is looking for a fix from a game in this genre and style, just play Dink Smallwood for PC. It's freeware, has entertaining writing, better combat (slightly) but still has the charm and sound of a 90s PC adventure game. Makes sense, because it was developed in the 90s.

  • @Dhalin
    @Dhalin Před 7 lety +9

    This game, I remember as being ridiculously long. It just goes on and on and on, and I actually did get all the way to the last boss fight, back before we had the internet... and I could not figure out how to beat the stupid thing whatsoever, and just GETTING to the last boss was a pain because of a minecart ride, IIRC. So many items, so much walking... I remember finally completing that rainbow you start out near, thinking "YAY I must be near the end of the game!" then you get to the enchanted forest area, and you find that area with all of those stumps, each one giving you an item and you're like "... okay... I'm not even halfway through the game" lol.
    I would have to say you will need maps and walkthroughs unless you've got a lot of patience -- the game does not explain itself well whatsoever, you'll be doing a lot of wandering around trying to figure out what item you need to open what, and some of the layouts can be confusing, especially those stupid minecart rides. If you manage to get your paws on a cartridge copy, I suggest getting the ROM and an emulator just to have save states (so you don't have to mess with passwords and to make the mine cart rides a bit less frustrating). The "push the block" puzzles can also be frustrating -- the first few aren't so bad, but the last few are just "ugh". Again -- might want some save states here, unless you want to get all the way near the end of the puzzle, only to figure out you made a move that requires you to reset the whole puzzle and gotta do it all over again.

    I'm playing this game right now and absolutely love it. It's an Action RPG game where you don't run into enemies and battle them on a different screen, you just kick ass in real time, or have to talk to every person you see and have to read loads of mind-numbing unimportant text, you see an image and you know that's what you need to find. It's just you solving puzzles, mostly finding things across the map to solve the puzzles yeah, but the game makes it fun. Isn't Mario about a guy trying to get a girl? Does anyone complain about that story? I think the carts are fun and a diverse aspect to the gameplay, really tests your memorization skills. I usually play SNES or NES games on mute and put on 8 bit versions of Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Metallica, Iron Maiden, or also put on the LOTR soundtrack for games like this, so I can't speak to the sound really, but anyways, this games rocks and I look forward to playing it at night.

    Good grief, you sure have picky demands. I loved this game when I played it as a kid. It’s not very long if you know what to do, but figuring that out was the fun of the game. The game had good controls and fighting bosses wasn’t a cheap affair.
