  • Riding the wave of handheld consoles, Asus plans to enter the market in a big way with their upcoming ROG Ally. Essentially a handheld gaming machine, capable of playing any game playable on PC from any client, whether Steam, EA Play or whatever.
    There’s been plenty of commentary surrounding the Asus ROG Ally and its similarities to Steam Deck. Whilst both are handheld consoles, Asus are clearly positioning the ROG Ally as a more premium option. It sports performance features and hardware specifications superior to Valve’s handheld too. Here are 14 things you need to know before purchasing the Asus ROG Ally.

    Battery life is huge. Honestly these power hungry handhelds should position power where the battery pack used to be for Xbox, so as to avoid the hands.
    2-4 hours at 60fps and lower brightness for more intense games is okay. Cloud will be great ofc :) but for native gameplay on the go for after class or at a friends house, a battery focus should be a big priority for ASUS / Xbox in the future. Still, awesome!

    • @azzart979
      @azzart979 Před rokem

      2-4 hours? In which parallel universe?!? 🤔
      You should be using 10 Watts of power to get 4 hours of play. It's already hard to get 20Watts of power consumption to reach two hours...

    • @BAMozzy69
      @BAMozzy69 Před rokem +1

      @@rhianor That's at 1080p with the screen set to 120hz and brightness turned up to max and settings as high as possible in 'turbo' mode. In 'comparable' settings to Steam Deck, it lasts about as long as they both share the 'same' 40w/hr battery. The difference here is that this machine can deliver 'More' if you want to push it but if you do, you'll drain the battery much faster as your using more 'watts' per 'hour' and your battery is rated to have 40w. It also Charges faster than Steam too...
      You can tweak the settings to be as 'intensive' as the machine can deliver - push up to 35w/hr of power consumption and with a 40w battery, get about an hour of gaming - or limit it to 15w and get 2-3hrs worth, limit it further by 'streaming' for example, as that isn't running natively and using your 'battery' to run the game, you can get 5-6hrs.
      The point is, if you are travelling and know that you are not going to be able to charge for a few hours, you don't run the RoG Ally at its 'highest' possible settings - you 'optimise' for 'longer' battery life - drop the res down to 720p and rely on upscaling tech to deliver a crisp 1080p image, turn a few settings down too as the difference is much less on such a small screen, cap the screen to 60hz, cap the game to 60fps etc to reduce the power consumption and increase battery life. Then when you get somewhere you can play near a power socket, you can really push the unit...

    After buying a top end ROG gaming laptop wayback in 2019 I’d say ASUS’s customer service and product quality is flat down 0/10 I also bought my peripherals from ROG, literally my gaming gear is almost 100% ROG apart from the ones who doesn’t have ROG alternative. Most of the products experienced issues after a year or two. The amount of bloatware from the Armoury Crate was also annoying with some of functionalities of the peripherals having issues in that trash software. Considering the first versions of the ROG phone was also garbage in both quality and customer support. It would be wise for those who doesn’t have tons of money to burn to let the Ally sit for a while and wait for actual reviews and future versions to come.
    Valve’s already planning the next Steam Deck and would probably be released in a year or two. It is just normal that the Ally would top the specs since the steam deck is already one year old and even older for when it was announced.

      1) Windows < Linux (SteamOs or in this case something like AsusOs or ArmouryCrateOs)
      2) no treckpads. You ain't gonna enjoy RTS, CRPG or FPS.
      If neither of that is a problem for you, the 700 Extreme version in USA is tottaly worth it. 600 non Extreme version is terrible for it's price (it has less cores so it will be even less energy efficient, let alone the degraded perfomance) and 750/860 price in Europe is pretty close to the competitors that offer much more "premium" devices.

      I mean a laptop is going to have worse battery life…. But for $300 more the zephyrus g14 isn’t a bad option. I have one and it’s a good deal on sale for $999.99. I’ve already pre ordered an Ally though. I love my steamdeck, but I want to give the Ally a shot, and if I find the dock second hand, or on sale down the line I’ll grab that too. The $800 version of the dock has amd mobile 6850 XT, which is more than capable of high end gaming at 1080 and 1440 resolutions. My zephyrus g14 has the 6700s gpu, and that handles 1440p just fine. So not a bad deal to expand the Ally, makes the total only $1500, and considering I bought my laptop for $1549.99 when it first launched early 2022, it’s not a bad option, and sticking with amd graphics on the dock means less ducking around with drivers as the iGPU on the z1e is using the amd drivers. So no need for amd and nvidia gpu drivers bloating the system together.
