What else would you like to see running on the Z1 version?
The SD card.
Mortal Kombat 1.
God of war, elden ring, MW2 or warzone and starfield.
I want to see how G-helper (3rd party armoury crate replacement) works underclocking/undervolting this.
You still working on the Aya neo pocket air can you please show some DMC 3 and FF8
The Z1 is $399. At this price point its worth it. It was able to run GTA 5 and Cyber punk. Not the best quality but very playable at 73 fps which is decent . In my opinion its Worth it. Im getting the Z1 version.
I got the z1 and it's great so far. What settings do you use for GTA to achieve 73 fps
This model would have made more sense with a 720p screen and about 400-450 price.
agreed
Would lose vrr which is pretty important
@@kennethfernandez1294they gotta do this or Microsoft won't pay Asus anymore
Yup, 100 dollar difference is not that much.
Have to upsell the higher end variant somehow
I just picked this up for 339 dollars. At that price I would say it's worth it.
Im thinking of buying one at $399. Do you recommend it ?
@@EvilRyosuke I do recommend it. Just know that you won't be playing modern triple A games at 60 frames per second.
@Fayem718 which games are you playing?
Where did u but it at
@@Fayem718just ordered mine from bestbuy brand new for 399. I don't play anything more intense than Diablo 4. Mainly indie games (dysmantle, risk of rain 2, American fugitive, stranded sails etc) how's your experience with it?
Let's go💪... been waiting for this.
I was eyeing these for quite some time, yesterday black Friday sales started popping up and I managed to snag this for about 450 before tax. Going to use it for my indie games mostly. excited to get my hands on it.
I would love to see a head to head with the z1 extreme limited to 6 cores and 12 threads I feel like the gpu would really be able to stretch its legs please do a video comparing the z1 and z1 extreme with only 6 cores 12 threads on both devices maybe the z1 extreme would clock the gpu higher with more power being allowed to be allocated with cpu cores disabled
Have always loved the form factor with handhelds.
I’ve never been more confident saying the Z1 is not worth the downgrade. Give it 6 months and they’ll be selling it for $400-500 then take it out of production.
Good point you have there.
Find that 100 dollar different also weird.
Make it 200 or more.
@@WickedGamerCollectorI won't buy this even for $400
Steamdeck is so good value now
Im hodling on to mind after upgrade to 1tb in march with dualboot
Looking fwd to ryzen 8000 APU nxtyear
@@HuntaKiller91so rather than getting better performance than the deck for the same price you would buy the deck? I'm not rooting for this device it's value sucks but for 400 it's worth
Straight up, the Z1 Model is an up sale trap. If you can afford $600USD odds are good you can probably afford to wait a bit and buy the Z1E Model. You're going to be sorely tempted to do this, or at least this is the hope of Asus.
But there's a problem for Asus. The Z1 chip, by Asus's own admission from months ago, stated that the Z1 chip trades blows with the Steam Deck, which, if true, kind of removes the Ally's biggest advantage over the Steam Deck.
So in this situation a potential Ally customer could be either up saled to the Z1E Model or down saled to one of the cheaper option Steam Decks and away from Asus. It really comes down to the mindset of the customer. If they can easily afford another hundred bucks they'll probably be up saled to the Z1E Model, but then again, if they could easily afford the Z1E model, then they probably were never even remotely considering the Z1 Model to begin with.
If on the other hand you can't afford anything more than $600USD, then even if the Z1 Model is more consistently better in performance, it's still going to be closer in performance to the Steam Deck than the Z1E Model, thus the Steam Deck is going to be that much more competitive against the Z1 Model than the Z1E Model.
@@HuntaKiller91Valve said there's gonna be a Ryzen 8000 for the Steam Deck next year?!
Can you test the sd card slot under load? Apparently, this area on the Ally has been failing a lot for users.
do you mind sharing where you can get the desktop backgrounds you're using? they look awesome.
Gracias por toda la información amigo, hay pocos videos con esta información acerca de la nueva Asus menos potente. Saludos!
Great video ! What do you use for your animated backgrounds? They look amazing. I want to try it as well.
Can you tell me where and how you got your wallpapers that you have on during the review??
It's a shame that the Z1 base only has such a drastic reduction in CU count for the GPU. A 8CU variant would have been nice for this.
It's using the Z1 which uses 2 Zen 4 cores and 4 zen 4c cores. The reason the flag ship and the z1 have such a gap in shaders count is because they are 2 entirely different dies.
Looking forward to the emulation video. 💯
Were both devices on the same driver version? If the Z1 has a newer driver, I'd be curious if that might mean driver optimizations are incoming for the extreme.
My sons mother and I are gifting him my 512gb Steam Deck, and i just purchased the Z1 Rog Ally from Best Buy for $399.99 and I love it, I loved my Steam Deck also, but the performance increase is good and the keyboard in windows is a breath of fresh air, and they patched the sd car issue with and Rog Ally made after July. $399 was a great deal
Have you noticed a performance increase over the deck on the standard Z1 version?
I just ordered this model for $400 at Best Buy, reading this made me very glad! 👍🏽
Can the z1 play triple A titles like cod, GOW, spiderman, Hogwarts, etc ?
In my country, Z1 is 200bugs cheaper than Z1 extreme, and im seriously thinking about buying one as my main portable emulation device for PS2/Gamecube games
This, I have a Z1 extreme as my home portable device and i got another Z1 as a portable console only for my GameCube/PS2 roms
In my country the Z1 extreme cost exactly the same as a steamdeck with only 64GB SSD. No brainer for me especially because it runs the full scope of games on steam and not just the linux ver
You might also be lucky with that Z1 chip with both so high CPU benchmark scores and it does also do 300 MHz higher for the GPU. It will be interesting to see if others have similar results.
If this was priced at around maybe $449-$499 then I think the cheaper option would be more worth it but for only $100.00 more it’s totally worth getting the Z1 extreme version.
Got mine for 449 at bestbuy
399$ best buy

Hey, I was wondering if you were going to get around to reviewing the HX77G, or is the difference from the HX99G not noticeable?
Hi :) Will the ROG Ally install and play coinops next 2 and the those frontends like legends 4 etc ?? I haven't seen any videos on this anywhere but can't understand why as it is windows based. Am i missing something here that prevents these things from installing and running these things. Thanks heaps for what you do for the community. I have been watching your videos for years , always excellent 5 stars !!!
Do you know when this one is available to pick up or order? Thanks.
heya i like ur content man, but one question? where do i find a docking stations for asus rog ally ? and yes i picked the none extreme bc it suit my needs lol. anyway good work
I have the z1 extreme. And i love it. I also have the steamdeck.... I know pointless to have both. But i love tech, and may have problems. Lol
I will say the rog ally is a beast. An runs anything you throw at it. The screen is the difference for me.
How does this perform compared to the steamdeck?, its got more teraflops but half the compute units even though they’re rdna3. Would this be better for pc gaming going forward bearing in mind the steamdeck is a few years old now.?
I think the overall configuration of the base Z1 really shows that it was never meant as a handheld gaming APU and that it is just a laptop APU branded, honestly the same goes for the Z1 extreme for that matter, for handheld gaming it should have been a 6 core 8CUs for the base model and 6 cores 12CUs for the extreme model as the extra CPU cores really aren't doing anything for gaming performance. What we need a real Van Gogh successor that's tuned to run well at 10W TDP.
I agree, but there seems to be a myth that you need more than 4 or 6 cores for gaming when really most games still don't use more than 1 or 2 for the most part. Even when that isn't the case beyond 4 cores the performance diminishes. Really these stupid decisions come down to marketing and ignorance. Because we all know that more cpu cores equals better performance in games...
It’s because it’s running windows that all those cores are needed to run the endless amount of background programs that it doesn’t need.
I own the lower version z1. I got mine open box new for 340 bucks. Great value for low intensity retro games. This has been a great travel buddy.
same - does a better job than my Steam Deck AND has eGPU support
It play snes playstation 1 and 2 and dreamcast N64 and Sega Saturn and the Original Xbox and Nintendo game cube. Mame especially if it possible
if the price was a little cheapper with an cheaper 60hz 720p painel, this could be better choice
Just run it at 720p lol
@ETAPRIME I love all your reviews, will you review the Lenovo Legion Go coming out? ps. is there a link for the anime girl wallpaper in the thumbnail? thank you.
Interesting. Maybe 6 cores is where it's at for a handheld form factor. 6 considerably higher clocked cores will always be better than 8 lower clocked, for our purposes anyway.
4 cores with newer architecture and good optimization can also go the distance
Not if you want to get good mileage out of rpcs3. Otherwise, sure. Well, also not really for some modern games like spider man.@@darkdiablo1601
I'm gonna pick this up and I know some people are gonna say some stuff about "just get a steam deck" I already have a midrange gaming laptop. This is basically something I'm gonna play at work and while I travel or in bed. All of those things have access to a wall outlet. I don't need 90 fps on ultra high settings. I'll take low settings, 720p and 60 fps any day. All I'm doing is playing older games like tomb raider, halo, maybeeee a few matches of MW3 for weapon xp along with emulation. This seems perfect for that imo.
Is it possible that this was supposed to come out at the same time as the Z1 extreme to give customers a slightly cheaper variant? But something happened in production that delayed it?
Im plotting on one at best buy priced at $339 open box in my town. Seems like a better deal than a g cloud or older model steam deck at this price point any opinions
I ordered the z1 last night for $400. The one thing I’m most worried about is, will it be able to run monster hunter wilds next year? If that’s the case I’m completely happy with the purchase, if not I may take it back
What do you use for your windows wallpapers?
Could just be me, but at 4:37, your 15Watt TDP test doesn't look right. The Ryzen Z1 power plan says Turbo, which might explain the slightly higher score compared to the Z1 Extreme.
Do u have a video on the Lenovo Legion Go?
It would be useful to add a chart to see the fps between z1 extreme and steam deck
This channel only makes advertisements, not reviews. Every product is always perfect with a great gaming performance.
Half the FPS for a 100$ discount makes this useless, but this wouldn't fit the "theme" of the channel.
@@crewmaster6014 lmao so true "every product is always perfect with a great gaming performance" I bet this thing could get like 30 fps in an snes game and he'd be like, "it gets a comfortable stable frame rate in snes, perfect emulation device"
@@crewmaster6014 you are right, all videos are the same here....
I got a perfect condition open box one for 330, I think something around that pricing would be good price for the slower z1 version.

What are your thoughts on using this device for PlayStation remote play?
Does it out perform the steam deck would be nice to see a rog ally z1 vs steam deck video

For better, should use Cinebench instead of Geekbench 6?
You can change Vram from armoury crate itself since a couple months ago. No need to get into bios.
Man if they would have given the gpu like 8cu’s this thing would have really shook things up
I bought this Z1 Non Extreme version on eBay for $345 in perfect condition. I don't need a powerful handheld for emulation or playing some USFIV. I actually use this as a Plex Server as well. lol. I know there are Mini PCs for cheap to use as a Plex Server, but for portability this is what I'm looking for.
Does the less powerful chip help with battery life?
Surprised they are even bothering releasing this especially after the Legion Handheld Unit
In India, Z1 extreme version was launched at ₹70,000 including taxes. It's about $870 if I'm not wrong. Z1 edition wasn't launched here.
我们买也一样不便宜!Z1 极致版
Kinda same in Europe
Now at $399 I think it’s worth it huh? I just got one myself and I’m still pondering whether I’m keeping it. I will watch some more videos and tweak it, but so far so good. It’s only $60 more than the Odin 2 and it does so much more. So it could be an option to run everything emulation and do some light AAA games.
5:15 Not sure what went wrong here, but the z1 extreme gets 2500/10500 points in 25W mode.
I recently got the extreme model for $601 open box. Best of both worlds lol
It’s got someone else’s booger stuck inside somewhere

If this z1 model costed slightly more than the steam deck, maybe around $449 or $499, it'd be a strong competitor that many would consider
That's literally the same price of the Deck.
Steam Deck cheapest model is 400 dollars.
@@mmert138 That's what I was thinking about. How are you gonna say the Z1 Ally should cost "slightly more than the Steam Deck" and then say $349-$399 like that price isn't BELOW or exactly the same price of the Steam Deck.

I think the Z1 is just as good as the steam deck in handheld mode and better in dock mode
I value performance over looks, if they cut down on that area a lot more and make this more affordable, this wouldnt be so pointless.
On first version all micro sd card reader burning 🔥 let’s see if they fixed…

The fact that ROG Ally Z 1 Extreme is regularly marked down to under $600 (Best Buy open box) buying this model seems kind of pointless. Now when this model starts getting those hefty mark downs, then it would be interesting to look at

How does the Z1 (which is based on the 7640) compare to the 6800u? That big TJD handheld looks interesting which uses the 7640U at the base model.
Its not based on 76 it has 😂half the cus
The tjd would destroy this in performance

@@ghostsauce3109 Because it's using a different die all together. Those 6 cores aren't all the same. This APU uses a combination of Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores.
They should have just made it a 720p 120hz screen and took out the RGB amd make it around $450. At this rate I'd recommend a low tier steam deck to friends and mod it if they want to save money since this is 30% less in performance than the steam deck and costs roughly $200 more. IDR the steam deck price cuts but ATM its get the steam deck or get the Z1 Extreme.
is battery life significantly better than z1 extreme?
In my country Rog Ally Z1 cost slightly less than OLED Steam Deck 512gb. Is it worth it? I mainly want Ally for Windows, i don't really care that much about power
where did you get that background 😍
I got this version, no complaints since i mostly play last gen games like skyrim/borderlands
Think it will run Wow?
Update, I saw this as low as $400 new at Best buy after steam deck lowered their LCD prices for the OLED. But this is still only worth it if you can always have it plugged in since the battery life is pretty bad
How many hours playing PS2 and GameCube?
Z1 non extreme open box from best buy is under 400 and xg mobile 4090 open box under 1900. Combination will give you 4k 60+ on modern triple A ganes at lowest cost per watt and easy to do if you aren't into building a pc. This will replace a dedktop and be better than dedktop 4070 and comparable if not a little behind a desktop 4080. The key is ease of configuring the set up and low power draw.
I'm still waiting for a titan or kingpin handheld gaming device. I hope there will be an option for a mini led display with 1,000 nits on a handheld gaming device so there will be no burn in issues that plague oled displays. I play games such as metro exodus enhanced edition, crysis remastered version, control, halo infinite, etc. Most of the games that I'm interested in have high visual fidelity since that's what I'm after when gaming. I have the 2022 razer blade 15 with Intel i9 12900h cpu, 4k 144 hz display, 32 gb ram, 1tb ssd and 3080 ti 16gb vram version. I play crysis remastered with can it run crysis mode in every graphics setting in native 4k with ray enabled tracing, ray tracing experimental ray tracing boost enabled, hdr, dlss off and v sync off. I use as much as vram as possible with every game that I play at that's in native 4k whether the game has ray tracing support or no ray tracing. With crysis remastered I get about 15 to 20 fps with the graphics settings that I have mentioned. I'm more a gamer that looks for the most highest visual fidelity as possible. I'm still waiting for a game that looks and feels like you wearing a go pro camera strapped to your forehead.

Does this unit still have the sd card frying problem… and are the sticks Hall effect or analog?
Can't speak to the SD card issue but the sticks are analog. Companies do make hall effect sticks for the ally and they're super easy to swap out though.

I think this is the best value, especially since they got these things going in the low 300 range now.

Not sure, but I really doubt it. Asus would have to do a complete re-design of the device, since the card reader was placed very close to the hotspot

The z1 playing cyberpunk at 70fps or 60 wow it's not goin to be as powerful as extreme version but it's not bad pls do compare z1 vs steam deck
