The Dream Journey - Discovering musicians across Pakistan
A film about an exhilarating eight day journey of five friends with a shared passion for discovering and recording musicians in their living environments across Pakistan.
The six sessions of vocal music recorded and filmed cover several musical forms in the Indo Pakistani tradition; Thumri, Kaafi, Ghazal, Qawwali and Khyaal. The kalaams that the musicians drew from ranged the whole spectrum of great poets: Khusrau, Jalal ud din Rumi, Kabir, Baba Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah, Iqbal, Faiz and numerous mystic poets of India and Pakistan. The performances evoked memories of the verdant lushness of the Punjab, the haunting mysticism of the Great Rajputana and Sind Deserts, the vibrancy of Hazrat Nizamuddin’s Delhi, the great aura of Ajmer, the majestic beauty of the Indo-Gangetic plain.
Some of the musicians are established and famous, others are amongst the brilliant budding talent that adorns Pakistan’s musical scene. Each of the mehfils has a distinct atmosphere and mood, but there is a common thread. We asked each of the musicians to stay close to their respective inherited musical traditions, allowing the singers an opportunity to present some pieces that are rarely heard today.
We are inspired to present the brilliance of this contemporary Pakistani vocal music to a wider audience and seek your financial assistance in making this possible.

Dream Journey, you guys should do more of Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. The ease of his delivery is unparalleled. This is not an easy Shahaana to perform.

I once attended a baithak featuring Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan accompanied by his nephew Akber Ali Khan (who also has a beautiful voice) and since then have been completely enamoured by Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. Finding clear and professional audio recordings of Mubarak Ali Khan sb is a hard enough and you have rewarded us with not only crisp audio but also video footage. I cannot thank you enough for uploading this. My only gripe is that it ends too soon - would love to hear him sing a full concert without time constraints. Thank you so much nonetheless
thank you for your comment. we do have more footage of him that we intend to edit and upload. however presently we are attending to recitals by other artists. i'm sure we will come back to add more of his. if you keep an eye on our channel by subscribing then you are bound to see it when it is uploaded.

I have recently attended a sittings with ustad mubarak Ali Khan sahib without even proper orchestra. It was the best ever experience of my life .
I live in London and has the opportunity to attend concerts of almost all Indian classical artists the likes of Ustad rashid Khan, pandit bhimsen joshi, kishiri amolker, kaushaky chakerborty and many more.
Actually, the sarangi is out of tune here . Fortunately, that did not affect Ustad Mubarak .

Wonderful Shahana. Mubarak Ali Khansahab is one of the few people I have heard influenced by Amir Khan who manage to let the influence enhance an original gayaki rather than being second rate imitators (see: Amarnath etc.).
Please Pandit Amarnath was not a second-rate imitator. He was not only a great singer but also a great vagyakar. The other being Gokulutsav Maharaj & Shrikant Bakre & Singh Bandhu.
He was an accomplished vaggeyakar and a learned man, but his gayaki left a lot to be desired. Gokulutsav Maharaj on the other hand is a good singer, however he has one big flaw in his singing. He cannot do taans, but insists on it anyway. They are intolerable.
It's your opinion - I have heard Pandit Amarnath in person many times and have found his expositions to be first class. His badhat is better than many big name singers who involve themselves in pyrotechnics instead of concentrating on raagdaari. His undoing was that he sounded too close to Ustad Amir Khan during Ustadji's lifetime, but that's not such a big flaw in my book. My fervent wish is that some of these modern day singers could sound like Ustad Faiyaaz Khan or Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan or Ustad Amir Khan but alas they are so lacking in skills & riyaz that they have to resort to gimmicks.
Very well, I defer to your more experienced opinion in regards to Amarnath ji. Can only say I agree with you about the latter, however I would add that the younger singers seem to lack not just skills but musicality as well. There is a lack of ras and bhav in their presentations despite them becoming more tilted towards the romantic, as well as a lack of gravity and weight, seriousness if you will.
