actually the man he mentioned as an influence, John Mclaughlin, sounded a bit like this, esp on Birds of Fire.. sorry, I know this comment is 4 years old!
His style is so recognizable, as soon as you hear him play you just know that's the guy who played on Peace Sells even though he looks so different now, 2:33 love those bends.
I'll never understand how can the way he put his left hand on the neck produce such a fluid sound like that. It seems such inflexible, mechanical and in complete contrast with the fluidity of his music. Despite that, if you close your eyes... Magic.
I absolutely love Mustaine, Friedman, Broderick and also Young. Everyone who has ever played guitar in Megadeth is indeed a very good musician, but Poland is just on a whole nother level. His style is incredibly recognizable and enjoyable, and Dave even said that Poland could play circles around him.
@@maxdurk4624 You are confusing left and right hand. Chris got the injury on his fretting hand. You can even see how fucked up his left index finger is.
Wow you can really see his severed tendon on the index finger in action. I love how guys like him, Tony Iommi, Django, Charlie Christian, etc all overcome their handicap and come out with a totally unique style. Amazing... go Chris!!
Apparently Rust in Peace was pretty much ready to go when he left and Friedman adapted his solos from demos. It's my favourite Megadeth album and I didn't know Poland had such an influence on it also. Have to admire the guy. His solos are brilliant without a doubt.
Budokid I understand what you are saying as I've quite a few of Marty's solo albums and many of the solos on Rust In Peace are very much his. However, when Poland left Megadeth Rust In Peace was pretty much completed and he had laid down quite a few solos in the studio. He later sued Megadeth for including those demos on the re-released version of Rust In Peace and Mustaine himself admits that Marty was influenced by Poland's work on those demos www.blabbermouth.net/news/chris-poland-settles-lawsuit-against-dave-mustaine/
Stephen Catherwood If you've heard those demos, you'll hear that Chris' solos sound completely different from Marty's. You can say he was influenced by the initial solos all you want, but all you really gotta do is listen to the demos and the finished songs to hear the massive difference in style between Chris and Marty. He's still an amazing guitarist though, many of my favorite Megadeth solos are on The System Has Failed.
I got to meet him in a concert in new york :D He was SO nice, he even invited me and a few friends backstage, signed a few cds, and let my friend use his guitar. Go see him in concert guys! UNFORGETTABLE
Initially, I wasn't taken with his playing on Peace Sells, but after I heard the remix & remaster, I realised that what he was doing was far more interesting and difficult than any other Megadeth lead player. I love his playing now, it's so fucking twisted. I got no idea how he does all that stuff at the start of Good Mourning/Black Friday where he seems to be playing with feedback and doing bends with it. Incredible guitaring.
all the ex-megadeth-guitarist (including current one) enjoyed their stay in megadeth, they get great honor, huge money , big gigs , big endorsements and bla bla....all were just great except covering chris poland solos ;)
I still can't fathom this guys sense of melody. I've been playing 35+ years and Poland's sense of melody is utterly fascinating. He lands on notes I'd never choose in a million years. If he ever incorporates his pinky finger into his playing, he'll reach the stratosphere.
How somebody can have that much technical ability with the guitar and be so humble about it is really cool. Makes me wanna sever a tendon in my finger to do those super long stretches. Dave Mustaine's own comments were that Chris was an amazing guitarist that could play circles around him.
Chris Poland and Shawn Lane - 2 unique amazing musicians who don't get the credit they deserve: how many times do you see them featured in Guitar World?
I personally think Marty's style suited Megadeth better... but technically speaking, this guy is in the same league as Allan Holdsworth, Satriani and Steve Vai, above all others guitarists in Megadeth
I agree, all Megadeth after including Rust In Peace just seemed generic sounding. Rust is good but again, had an element of generic Megadeth. Chris and Gar all the way.
@@nobodysreview6137 you’re talking out of your ass boy. Rust in peace is the best and the most technical record. It had the best Dave solos and riffs too.
@@Qthetar Its good, the drums are bland and its trying to hard, Peace Sells is better because thats the real Megadeth, after Chris and Gar were gone it became Megadave.
After years and years, I've finally been able to play some of Poland's solos properly. I love playing Bad Omen's intro solo over and over again now that I can lol.
I think that Marty may be more innovative in a lot of ways, but Chris is and always will be my favorite guitarist. It's so smooth, jazzy in all the right ways and really brought me into jazz.
Man...he and James Murphy are definitely two of the more standout guitarists I've heard--ones that don't sound like they've gone to school their whole lives.
Way to go Chris! You do it so effortlessly and you're an amazingly grounded human being. I only wish we got to see much more of you over the years. All the best to you!
After meeting chris @ 2014 Namm talking about the new Stone Tone® Rock Blocks @ the Floyd Rose booth it was great to hear his concerns and quest for the ultimate tone in which he said he has tried everything until now. He tried the Rock blocks and now has full endorsement to use 37mm rock blocks on all his guitars. Welcome to Stonetone® Chris !
I don't see anything wrong with learning some cool licks from guitar players that you consider to be a big influence on your playing. I really enjoy Chris Poland's tone and style, he's the reason why I continue to play guitar to this day.
MadBurner1 I agree with the Broderick part but not with Friedman, they have very different styles. So please, sir, don't go jumping to conclusions and shit.
@MrUsedBooks He does use his pinky and his index finger is the one that got slices open and that is why his index looks all weird and bends at the very tip but this makes it so his movements are a lot more limited because he can reach so far with that index.
megadeth with chris and gar was the best. sorry guys but i enjoyed killing is my business more than rust in peace and peace sells just beats everything else
Everyone has his opinions, Peace sells has a very jazzy feel to it, I managed to make my father listen to some of Chris' solos and he said there were very jazzy, bluesy and cool. Rust in Peace has a more neo-classical approach, because Friedman is a Neo-classical guitarist, which makes it very different from Peace sells.
Dave & Chris is one of my favorite guitar duos, alongside Glenn & K.K.. Chris' playing is my favorite in all of Megadeth formations, it's so cool! Wake Up Dead, Rattlehead, Bad Omen, Devil's Island, and all the other tracks from the first formation are their greatest, for me.
he is now a member of a trio called OHMs. He's playes schecter guitars (proly going to get a signature soon) so watch his performance at last schecter namm party,it's pretty cool
Chris Poland is that neighbor around the building you walk past every day and share a smoke together in the parking lot…until you see him play at a club and you’re like “bro! I never knew you played guitar!!” And he’s like “well, yea kinda, if I have time . How’s your night?”
Poland is so underrated. He is easily in my top 10 maybe top 5 guitarists. His vibrato and phrasing are unmatched. The only negative thing I can say about the guy is that he repeats himself a little bit with his solos but with a style that is so unique and personal as Poland's, repetition is not such a bad thing. His songs are diverse though, He's not like Malmsteen who writes with no variation whatsoever. Poland should be thought of as one of the greats but you will never see him donning the cover of Guitar Player or any other magazine. Its criminal.
Chris Poland is the most underrated guitar player I have ever heard. Incredible tone, incredible riffs, and, needless to say, incredible legato. He never ceases to amaze me.
"I'm not a jazz guy.."
*makes guitar sing like a flaming saxophone*
He's SUCH A JAZZ GUY! Wtf hahah
says the jazz guy himself XD
He’s not a jazz guy
Saxophone is really apt when describing Chris' playing 👍
Yeah, he definitely is.
I have yet to hear someone bend a string like Chris Poland does.

Plays like nobody on earth. Mindblowing. "I just kinda have to arrive at it". Translation; you have to be him or you can't do it.
The Dave,Dave,Chris, and Gar lineup was and always will be the best Megadeth lineup

he holds his pick even more strange than Marty..hmm..seems to be a "join-Magedeth" requirement
