Maybe... the initial settlers "pilgrims" had distinct differences from the later Puritan groups that overran the colony. The pilgrims were not as hardcore, especially the initial survivors. They were significantly more friendly and tolerant.

I care what he is. I'm glad he stated he identified as a gay man. In writing to a wide audience, short verse/prose/poetry, it is always good to elaborate a point to convey meaning, especially if it is heartfelt.
