  • These engines as many others of any identical design are very different from each other despite the fact they are all V-10s. They vary in size, weight, used materials and the pure behaviour is completely different. I let you to decide which one is the best, but we can all agree that every single one is spectacular.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm Před 2 lety +18

      Yes I think people believe that undersquare vs oversquare affects the performance of the engine WAY more than it actually does, especially on a street engine. On an 2 valve engine it matters a lot more because you need the big bore to get adequate valve area. This was noticeable on a Chevy 302 vs 305. Basically the same displacement but the 302 is a much better performer because the 4" bore allows for much larger valves.

      As long as you are grading an engine on its ability to power a vehicle, rather than its emissions ratings, or what tech it has, or other things like that then there really isn't a problem with comparing old engines to new ones. Viper v10s can be built up to 3000hp so its up there with the best in my book

    The funny thing with the Lexus V10 is it was made by Yamaha, which makes lots of engines for various car manufacturers and also motorcycles. The original and 2nd generation Ford Taurus SHO had engines made by Yamaha, and the 3rd generation Ford Taurus SHO's V8 was partially developed by Cosworth and Yamaha, and they co-developed the Ford Zetec-SE engine. Yamaha also developed the engine for the original Volvo XC90. Yamaha also has worked with Toyota for decades, developing the engine for the 2000GT, the 4A-GE engine's cylinder head, as well as the cylinder heads of pretty much all of Toyota's performance oriented engines versions. Yamaha was also a F1 engine supplier and designed a concept for a supercar with an engine based on the F1 engine named the OX99-11 V12.

      5v is not that great. 5 Valves was an interesting experiment but 4 valves works better, makes more power, is less complicated and costs less to build.Not only is it a real estate issue with five valves, but intake camshaft design is really complicated by the three valves. The center intake valves opens at a different time from the other two simultaneously opening intake valves, and theoretically this provides more overlap without resorting to radical camshaft timing. Great theory, four valves work better with simpler camshaft profiles.
