  • My Head On Your Body is a horror visual novel about a family that moves into a new house where the previous owner had been murdered... but they never found his head. It also uses AI generated artwork, and I'm curious to know your thoughts about how I should cover this type of use of AI going forward.

AI that uses one's own inputted works is cool. AI that uses consenting artists' work is also cool. AI that uses artists' works regardless of consent is not cool. Guaranteeing what is and isn't stolen is difficult and a slippery slope to accepting stolen work in general. I think there needs to be push back when it's theft. By refusing to tolerate art-theft via AI, we can help curate a better future for artists and game developers alike. I think artists' consent would look the same as people who make free assets for games and gaming engines. Something donation based but otherwise free to use. I think being able to have this dialogue is important. Being able to agree on what transparency looks like, what theft looks like, and the scale in which AI is acceptable for profit and what that looks like (and so much more). It's such a nuanced topic that a solid "yes" or "no" won't make sense.
Right now there are quite a few generative AI programs/software/apps that mine the internet for any content it wants, to the point where it's prompted people to start creating anti-AI watermarks that will distort the generative process. Until there are better protections in place against theft, the responsibility to check AI falls on the consumer. We have to power to change predatory AI practices but we have to actively resist those practices.

I appreciate the little AI "heads up" at the beginning of the video. I also understand that AI is going to be (almost) everywhere, especially in videogames, so I'll just do my best to adjust to it.

Your perspective on AI is level headed, and I have to agree. I am super anti-AI but when it's a solo developer or tiny project, I can understand the leniency... Especially if developers are open with their use of it. It was good that they included a disclaimer in the game description. Basically it's okay with me as long as people aren't trying to pass it off as wholly original content and on a small scale. Not that my opinion is truth lol.
Anyways, if the game pops off and the developers make good money from it, their next projects can likely afford to pay real artist which will only improve their portfolio in the long run. Everyone has to start somewhere, and AI is a good tool for that, used wisely. Love your vids Kravin!

I personally hate (generative) A.I for a great number of reasons, but don't judge anyone for trying to use it ethically. I hear about it being compared to photoshop, but photoshop doesn't scrape tons of data without people's consent. It's cool conceptually, but the horrible things I've seen people do with it left too bad a taste in my mouth to even tolerate it.

I feel like AI art is partially comparable to how people felt about Photoshop when that started adding more tools to make digital art faster to produce. (The ethical use of artwork to train the AI is its own can of worms that I try to avoid getting into.)
I generally agree with your take on it and only have an issue with it when it's being presented as something original when it isn't. Or when a studio has the budget to hire artists and they choose not to. The AI taking over is its own kind of horror lol

I personally would try to avoid AI as much as possible because it has such a bad reputation but I can understand if you don't/can't. It's becoming a lot more common as time goes on and soon it's going to be pretty unavoidable.
I also don't mind media that's 100% free and upfront about there being AI in it tbh.

I think your approach to AI is good. I think it is a good tool to help for stuff like this BUT I don't think it is absolutely justified any more than let's say tracing art. Using it as a learning tool for yourself is a-okay, but doing published stuff is a cheap steal. There are so many other ways of achieving this same style by yourself. For a sketch in your own drawer it is a-okay, but I think one should appreciate their creation enough to actually create it if that makes sense.

It’s not so simple but if there’s a fun game, I will support and play it regardless of who or what created it.
Although I already enjoy hearing your voice acting so it would be cool hearing your voice put into the actual games.

About AI - I dislike it heavily. People misuse it all the time. But I trust you to choose games that responsibly use AI. I like this approach.
Just avoiding games that have used AI is going to be as impossible as it is currently impossible to avoid games where used images and pics haven't been Photoshopped. It's just AI has more potential to cost people jobs than AI, and people can be MUCH more stupid about when to use AI.
My POV - I've done art for pay before. Those little jobs have started disappearing because people just go create AI images instead. It didn't pay my bills, it was just some extra cash here and there, but it does mean some freelancers don't get hired and have a harder time paying their bills.

For me, the risk of AI art is that it could easily put copyrighted s**t in your game. Like the Sailor Moon picture on the bedroom wall.

While I understand the use of AI art for low budget games, the fact that AI voice is used for anything bothers me personally. Especially when there are tons of people ready and willing to record those lines for free just to be credited as the voice actor. Honestly, it's just another way technology is stealing jobs.

  • @lordcabbage1285
    @lordcabbage1285 Před měsícem +4

The use of AI for "voice acting" in indies feels reasonable but I'm not a fan of AI art in general. Since this is a horror gaming channel I'll use a horror game example as to why that is. Just think about Silent Hill 1-4's monster, character, and even environmental design for a moment and consider how important the human input of INTENT was in the designs.
When a creator of media uses AI art they are removing a key component of what makes a lot of design noteworthy to begin with. Imagine instead of HR Giger designing the iconic Xenomorph and it's life-cycle the suits with all the money said, "Well, it's cheaper to generate a monster through AI". What's the likelihood the AI's results would've been as intentional? We introduced an out to creativity and being human we are likely going to fall ill to that temptation whether it's by our choice or someone else.

AI is complicated. I've had some great fun xp with AI. Of course a bigger studio have the money to hire actual people and should not resort to AI, that's just... low from them. To fill in blanks you can't yourself provide as an indie dev, sure. So long as it's transparent. I thought this visual novel was utter crap tbh. Nothing original, not a good story, trying to be vague for vagueness sake, etc. I did like the color palette, but knowing that someone just typed in "synth wave" for it doesn't really cut it for me. To be honest I did not catch the AI voice over from the earlier game you mentioned, I kinda liked it's weird delivery. Hmm.

Sorry I didn't watch this one and apparently you give your own thoughts, I'll try maybe to look through and see what was said. But even a cheap game I don't condone it because there is no ethical GLLM (AI) at the moment. All data used is not only harvested from artists without compensation, but contains literally anything they could get their hands on. That includes personal photos, medical records etc. As well as various sites suddenly opting people in without consent. I would rather a game have "bad" art than something like this..
A post already stating why this isn't the same but I'll say it as well. It isn't the same because at the time, Photoshop did not steal other people's work to fuel the machine itself. It cannot create off of it's own works, so they need other people's work which they do not ask for permission for. Yes people could always steal art but the difference was that ball was in the users court and not done on a massive scale. Despite this being compared to a human learning, no human being is capable of even right click saving and viewing that amount of work in such a short amount of time.
I say at the time, because Adobe has recently, despite saying they would not, taken people's artwork for use in their own AI/GLLM. Loish and others have found their work on Adobe's marketplace despite them opting out. This work is then presented as being associated with the original artist. This work is being sold. None of it is ethical, even a small developer who is selling a game for like a buck gets a sideeye from me and others.
People's early issues with Photoshop is they believed it was easy, and yes in that regard the same could be said for GLLMs. Except you can literally type in anything and it produces that result without effort. There are apparently different ways to approach that way of working that involves more effort but noone who is anti-ai is going to look at it seriously when it is stolen goods.
As well, people should make the effort to actually try to make the work on their own. One of the lies that is put out is that this is the democratization of art. What it is the "democratization", or rather, the homogenization of "good art." These systems ultimately serve to limit because they control the output. As for the argument for disabilities or issues like Aphantasia, people with aphantasia have long created work without the need for something to just output it without drawing.
