Germanic pagan traditions associated with wolf-men persisted longest in the Scandinavian Viking Age. Harald I of Norway is known to have had a body of Úlfhednar (wolf-coated [men]).

The werewolf is a widespread concept in European folklore, existing in many variants, which are related by a common development of a Christian interpretation of underlying European folklore developed during the medieval period. From the early modern period, werewolf beliefs also spread to the New World with colonialism. Belief in werewolves developed in parallel to the belief in witches, in the course of the Late Middle Ages and the early modern period. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology, where lycanthropy is reconstructed as an aspect of the initiation of the kóryos warrior class, which may have included a cult focused on dogs and wolves identified with an age grade of young, unmarried warriors. A few references to men changing into wolves are found in Ancient Greek literature and mythology. Herodotus, in his Histories, wrote that the Neuri, a tribe he places to the north-east of Scythia, were all transformed into wolves once every year for several days, and then changed back to their human shape. This tale was also mentioned by Pomponius Mela.
The fact is that skinwalkers and shapeshifters are as old as shamanism itself. And has existed in all cultures and all continents. And most importantly it is the duality of man itself, the civilised human side and the wild side. While the Abrahamitic beliefs are rejecting the wild nature of mankind, animism embrace it and recognize it as a part of human nature.
I believe the shamans were the First Falconers , and used the Raptors in there ceremony s . Some of that can still be found with the Mongolian Shamans .
American Indians have a still strong belief in shape shifters and werewolves in their culture.
I also want to say that it is not so much of a "rejection" of the animal nature as it is a controling and leashing the animal nature to be used as needed.
My most viewed has 1 main character of these Beings and 4p seconds to examine. The background is also loaded. Ian Armstrong.

The origins of werewolves start with the Epic of Gilgamesh; where Ishtar turned an ex lover into a wolf. Then you have the story of King Lycaon, who was turned into a werewolf by Zeus.
This.
Exactly .. funny how on the show Vikings they were fed the flesh of emperor euphemius lol
And didn't Zues curse King Lycaon to be a werewolf because he served human meat to the gods?
@Michael Hansen yea, Zeus heard he was serving human meat to his guest, so Zeus went to find out for himself. Zeus, disguised as a human went to visit the king. King Lycaon tried to serve Zeus the same kind of meat and was punished. Telling the king since he wants to act like a beast then he'll be one. Something like that.
@@williamroach3897 and if I remember right, this is where the word Lycanthopy comes from.
Thx for this interesting summary
Here in Germany, there are still old stories about the time between the years (Rauhnächte), especially in the mountains like Alps or Thuringian Forest. People used not to get out at night, too. In some little villages in southern Germany there are still young guys with masks and furs walking around and scaring people by knocking on there doors. If they meet someone outside they can be pretty rough, especially with women. A friend of mine grew up in such a village and she told bad stories about that tradition. During Carnival there are much more events, in bigger towns too, where huge groups are dressed like wild men and walk through the town. If you come too close they make their fun with you, but they are sweet with little children.
This doesn't happen in America because you would be shot
I think it is very interessting how you as a norwegian say "Velkommen alle sammen" and we in Germany say "Willkommen alle zusammen".
There you can see that these languages have the same roots.
norwegian has germanic roots so yes! i'am swedish wich too is germanic in roots, i have a very easy time learning german and know some!
In Dutch is: Welkom allemaal
In Fries is: wolkom elkenien
very good
Afrikaans: Welkom almal saam, or just welkom almal.
The Ice-Age Lion Man would show this goes back 40,000 plus years. Shiva was often shown with fangs, and then the parallels with the American Indian cultures, especially the Olmec/Mayan who had Jaguar transformation. I love to hear more on the Scythian-Germanic relationship, also I'd love to see a video on the basics of Nordic languages. I became Animist through more "so called" primitive cultures.
I'm from sweden, i saw a werewolf about 20 years ago around the summer solstice. Just walking distance from where they found the "Torslunda plates" at öland. And because of that, ive researched about these creatures a lot.
If you look at how the vikings described the berserkers, everything fits perfectly into the description of these wolf creatures, much better than the a-man-being-in-some-sort-of-trance-like-state theory. Many people have seen them, even in modern times, and they all describe them looking as either a wolf, bear or boar (which all have the same features; a snout, dark fur and big ears) with a humanish torso(with hands), and almost everytime, just like the one i saw; glowing red eyes.
I could talk about this topic for hours, but just one more thing; many witnesses have seen them dig into graves and theyre often seen in or near graveyards. Also, compare it to Anubis. They exist all over the world, its just that people add their own little fantasies and details to their descriptions, but if you scrape that away, you'll see that theyre all talking about the exact same creatures.
Regarding my own account:
The one i saw was huge, black/grey fur, looked extremely old with thin fur or like it had mange, very wrinkled in the face, looked extremely angry, glowing red eyes and when it showed its teeth, it looked just like it was grinning. It was absloutely creepy being there, it used to slam into the walls from the outside and at one point it even opened the door(which wasnt locked).
One day, the neighbour(a shepherd), moved all his sheep to some other location. That very same night, i saw the wolf man sitting outside the window and staring at me, seemingly infuriated.
My granddad who owned the house would say that the sheperd was weird, due to him asking about strange things, but would never tell me excatly what.. Now i would assume he probably asked if my granddad had seen some strange creature.. He would later sell that house, but didnt seem to have a good reason for why he didnt want to live there anymore, as he couldnt tell us exactly why.. And then the new owners sold the house fairly quickly aswell lol I dont know if anyone owns it today, but i wouldnt recommend it to anyone.
I still occasionally have nightmares about the wolf man i saw that night, last time was yesterday.
If you really want to know the real truth about what the vikings talked about, you must do a lot of research into these types of creatures. It will truly open up your eyes to what they meant.

That's really cool! They exist but people are usually too afraid to admit it or accept it. Some people just don't believe. That's ok. We know. 👍🏼😁👍🏼
I believe you
In Brasil I've heard a Guarani legend called Jaguarete-Avá, or Jaguar man.
Although the story varies, supposedly there were a shaman who would wear jaguar skin, bird feathers and use incenses to perform a ritual, walking from left to right, chanting a prayer to then become a hybrid of man and jaguar.
The Jaguarete-Avá would go off hunting and would only turn back after devouring it's prey, performing the same ritual again, but walking from right to left.
I don't know much more about it but it is fascinating that people so different, living so far away from each other, would have such similar tales of rituals and shapeshifting!
Very similar spirituality. I am native American and Caucasian. I have experienced the elusive Jaguar on occasion.
Of course as a high functioning genius autistic schizophrenic all I say can just come off as the ramblings of the very insane.
Here in the US we call them werewolves, dogmen, and many sightings of them are in the US and Europe. Native Americans have a shapeshifter and usually will turn into an animal. Great information and sharing. Thank you! 👣🦅💕👍🏼😁👍🏼
Very interestingly in Germany there are also stories about the wild hunt led by Woden and he is accompanied by wolves and dead people. Roman sources also refer to warriors in bear or wolf skins among Germanic tribes. Great videos! I just love the connection of Germanic tribes through time.
I'm enjoying watching your videos I am part German part Swedish my fathers last name is aldinger my mothers is norman I've always been drawn to wolves or talking about wolves my wife my the gods rest her soul was native american I am drawn to this culture too I thirst for more knowledge of the nordic culture .
This video clears some things up for me. I thought I had gotten a glimpse of a past life, but the group I was in I remembered had something to do with the Wild Hunt. I guess I may have been a pelt wearing warrior in a past life then
Read the book Blood Meridian by Cormack McCarthy. That's a wild west version of the wild hunt.
The account of Thiess of Kaltenburn sounds just like a Robert E. Howard story: harnessing raw primordial strength to fight supernatural evil. Howard must have been able to tap into himself to understand our ancestral past.
You should do a video on Scythians.
I know he likes to keep it norse themed/connected so at least a Scyhian norse comparison video would be awesome
@@kev1734 I did some research on Scythians. Their culture was similar to early Germanic cultures. They were not Germanic, that is clear, but I think there is a connection.
Check out Asha Logos channel, he has a great video on the Scythians.
Thank you for another great video! Always fun learning from the actual sources. Keep'em coming!
My last name is Lobo and my father always had an affinity for wolves. I myself love canines of any type, perhaps it is a strange belief that we are connected to them.
To be a berserker and fullsterkur was like being a super hero/villain.
Thank you for this video! Been waiting for someone to explain some of these things related to shapeshifters/ berserkers
Uploaded on a wednesday, during a full moon. Nice.
Very informative. I didn't know all these tales, though I do find them funny. I was born on November 13th, a Wednesday. My father was adopted by a native American tribe who named him shunkawakahn wanzila, which means wolf who stalks in shadow. Wish I knew more about Ulfhednir
Glad I came across your channel! Really enjoy hearing about Norse culture and you take on everything
The ulfhednar ritual in the Northman was a dream come true
Usually the comment section on this channel is loaded with insightful comments from regular viewers. Today it is loaded with cringe pagan nonsense. Despite that, the video was still good and informative as usual.
hollywood totally distorted the lore of werewolves. the scythians have always fascinated me most notably their art and mysterious presence in history. Their bows are also remarkable and beautiful
Hey brother loved your video and I do agree that the werewolf does seem to come from a much more ancient legend either with the Ulfhednar or Proto Indo European koryos and maybe (theoretically) as far back as the ice age from a population known as the ancient north Siberians. This wolf warrior elite may have came from an ancient western Eurasian population in northern Siberia that seems to have first domesticated the wolf and “possessed the spirit” of wolves to attack eastern Eurasian populations as far south as China. Of course this is still a developing theory and this werewolf motif likely came from the koryos or Ulfhednar.
Another thing I did want to reference was that you said that the Scythians were of Germanic descent but this actually isn’t true but I understand why people see this. The Scythians being Germanic actually started from the british Hebrew Israelites in the early 20th century who were trying to connect the Scythians being some kind of lost Jewish tribe (making the Germanic peoples Hebrew Israelites). Of course this isn’t plausible as even Christian chronology claims that the aryans/ Indo Europeans were of the line of Japheth but I’ll save that for a different time. The reason why people often mistake the Scythians/ Saka as Germanic today is because they were said to have had red/ auburn hair (which was common among ancient Germanic sources), were of the northwestern Indo European branch (italo-Celtic-Germanic-balto Slavic- iranic- Sanskrit) and of course were similar to the goths culturally. The Scythians were semi-nomadic iranic horse lords who often traveled in tribal clans and the goths were the most nomadic of the Germanic peoples, which often makes people to intertwine each other. But if we look at the linguistics, genetics and religions we do know that the Germanic and saka peoples were not directly related but we’re actually cousin peoples separated by around 1500ish years.
Just something I wanted to address but other than that your sources are still the best and you’re still the best Germanic pagan channel around. 🙂
Yeah, germanics and scythians are separate but they are both of strong indo-european stock
@earlofpretania3088
I would call the Scythians also Germanic, anyway our History is rigged up worldwide.

On the other side, personally speaking, as I've gone through life I've often noted I become somewhat irritable and intolerant on a full moon. I actually had a very striking dream many years ago wherein, upon a full moon, I understood I was a werewolf and warned my then girlfriend to stay away from me. Ever since then I've kept tabs and, when I find I'm becoming irritable for no reason, I take a squint outside and it's full moon. So, not that I have any explanation for it (or believe myself a werewolf), I do however think there is some truth in there being an emotional effect of the full moon on us - I get a physical sensation of edginess, like I've had too much coffee. Being as women's body's follow the lunar cycle, I personally don't think that such an outlandish proposition.
@Conon the Binarian [Grr.]
That's rather interesting, as on full moons, I usually find myself in some sort of elation, like I can take on the world with a smile. Kind of strange the different effects it can have on people.
I am jealous that your Werewolf video is better than mine 😆 very good video.
I would like to point out that it was not limited to the indo-europeans, the Basdques, whcih are a very ancient European culture had the Gizotxo, which litteraly means "Man-Wolf". I think Europe was ALWAYS very connected
Ulfheonar did not transform into wolves after crossing but lived as wolves for six years. Warrior shamans fasted were exposed to extreme heat and cold, performed weapons dances, and before they could transform, they had to make a sacrifice to the berserker spirits father Loki. The Fenris wolf's head cross preceded them in battle and is my one and only tattoo. They were said to be nearly unkillable.
We have the same stories in Russia. You can search if you want to. Those shapeshifters called Volkodlak. Basically the one who can change into a wolf
Oh boy! No joke ,I have a sweater on right now that resembles your coat. Time to hear about wild hunts and such. I love a Rugru story.

Faoladh/conroicht. Werewolf in my native language Irish. The old Irish name for Wolf is Fael or Faelcu. In Ireland long long time way back. Wolves were native to Ireland. But like always humans killed them off. A guy a few years back bought a load of land in Donegal which is called Wild Ireland. He has 3 Brother wolves & a young wolf. He believes in reintroducing wolves, bears etc back to Ireland. Check out Wild Ireland and you can read about it. It's also opened to the public. I've been there. My favourite are the Wolves & the Lynx
I like watching your videos. You bring out my inner viking. Still looking for my "You Can't Keep A Good Viking Down" T-shirt.
This is also what I think is the basis for the werewolf myth. It makes perfect sense to me. Warriors wearing wolf pelts with the belief that they are imbued with aspects of that animal? You can totally see how over time that would morph into modern day werewolves
What about the native American legends? Skinwalkers and the Mexican Nagual. Could this be far older?
Absolutely! The werewolf of 20th century pop-culture and relatively modern lore, is a very distant and heavily convoluted version of its true origin.
@@renaldotorcque4417 Sorry I'm not sure. I am not knowledgeable in their beliefs

I was born on December 27th. When i was young, until the time i was a teenager, i would get into these ecstatic states, especially at night, and more so, if there was a full moon.
My parents sent me to see therapists for behavioral problems, but nothing came of that.
I didn't hurt anyone, and never felt anger, or malice. I would just be "bouncing off the walls" as my parents would say. If i was outside at my grandparents farm, i would run around like an idiot through the fields and the woods most of the night, usually pretending to be hunting something.
My cousins would "run wild" with me to some extent, but the behavior was instigated by myself.
Like i said, i never had any violent tendencies towards others, but i did feel almost invincible during these episodes.
When they were over, i would obviously be wiped out, and my family would be relieved.
I would give anything to feel that kind of energy again.
Im mostly a genetic mutt, but i do have about 40% Scandinavian DNA. The rest is mostly, "British Isles".
I had no idea what my ancestry was when i was a kid, but hearing these tales reminds me of that feeling.
Yes, im wierd, and no, i do not think that i am a werewolf.
I can just relate to the experience as described.

After watching this video I reread the werewolf issue of The Sandman by Neil Gaiman, The Hunt. It’s in the 6th trade paperback, Fables & Reflections, and it is very accurate to this video.
Wolf-whisperers are also commonly found in mythology and trials. People who allegedly had a supernatural control over wolves and could make them attack their enemies.

The púca (from the Irish* for “ghost”) is a shapeshifting trickster spirit of Celtic folklore that usually takes the form of a domestic animal, or a human with telltale animal features, such as large ears, fur, or a tail.
Great video.
Your content is always great. However, I think you should be careful and establish when a theory or belief you happen to hold doesn't align with scholarly concensus, in this case, your belief that the Scythians were a germanic people is not held by mainstream scholars in any way, instead they were more likely (broadly) Indo-Europeans from the Iranic branch of the tree, which does a good job of explaining all the similarities they had with the Germanic, Baltic and Slavic tribes they were related to. In the case of the Neuri you mentioned, they were probably not Scythians themselves but rather Baltic peoples intimately related to modern Lithuanians.
Edit: For people out there reading, Iranic is just the term for an Indo-European branch; these Iranic peoples are distinct from the Middle Eastern peoples
Also known as Aryans
@@brandonolson6299 Aryans are a subdivision of the Indo-Iranians in much the same way that Germanic peoples are a subset of Indo-Europeans. Indo-Iranians is broader, hence more accurate since we are talking of the Scythians.

@ 7:30 this to me sounds like it could have a slight relation to Sköll and Hati chasing the sun and moon.
Now I understand those 2 wolves chase those planets to bring about night and day, but when you look at other Indo Euro folklores (not sure which ones in particular) it was a Battle for the sun when it dipped down, and the sun had to fight evil spirits to come back up.
So to me it sounds similar if these Wolf clans went into Hel to fight evil to bring about good crops
The answer lies in the current study of the psychology of trauma. In the 1990s, Peter Levine discovered that the animal response to a traumatic experience, shaking the fear out, also works in humans (Waking the Tiger)., as long as it's done before the mind processes the experience in beta-phase sleep. That embeds unprocessed trauma into storage in the amygdala, as a tokenised trigger and a desired response. In 2020, one of the lead trauma study groups of identified a single process by which the response reflex reacts to a repeat experience. An incoming signal on the sensory channels is pre-vetted against the reflex triggers, and it there's a match, a fight-or-flight signal is sent straight to the motor cortex. The visual/cognitive cortex reacts far more slowly.
This can degenerate into complete disorder (PTSD/CPTSD), so the hunt's been on for a cure.
Around two dozen empirical therapies exist, none of which address the issue head-on, but create a common state of cognitive suppression by various routes running from mindfulness/meditation through hypnosis, the shamanic and the psychotropic into bondage. That subconscious state releases a number of processes, one of which drains the reflex response associated with a trigger held in mind as the subject releases their cognate inhibitions. This exactly matches the berserkgangyng, dropping into a state where the fight reflex is unrestrained. Their human mind is off-line, and more primitive reflexes take over. Something similar's recently been observed in chimp tribes declaring war on groups of gorillas. However, being of a military background which certainly has the berserkgangyr reflex in full, I've mastered that "red fog of war", by not allowing my subconscious to take control: it's very fast in combat, though.
Ulfheðinn means "fur cloak" or "wolf cloak"? I would thing the Ulf/Wolf element is hard to miss.

Interesting to see how the Latvian case was similar to the Faoladh of the Celtic days, where they are such far distances. Where the Faoladh were revered, appreciated, and actually seen as godsent beings for the people.

one thing that occured to be recently is that serk means skirt which is interesting. not bear shirt, mantle, jacket or something like that. so berserkr means wearer of a bear skirt. but a bear pelt is quite big i guess so it would reach the ground like a skirt still kind of peculiar though.

Were is an old word for man (as in male, not human). Werewolf is literally manwolf
I recall a comedian (I can't remember his name) having a story about his grandfather believing himself to be a werewolf. The grandfather told his family something like:

An old Cherokee Indian chief was teaching his grandson about life.
He said " A fight is going on inside me," he told the young boy, " a fight between two wolves.
The Dark one is evil - he is anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.
" He continued, " The Light Wolf is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence,, empathy, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you grandson.. and inside of every other person."
The grandson ponders this for a moment and then asked, " Grandfather which wolf will win? " The old Cherokee smiled and simply said " The one you feed ". 🐺
