Conspiracies sell… and not just in the USA. Just the other day, I was in my local bookstore in Belgium and a book titled “Factcheck: No!” was in the top 10 bestsellers of the month. It’s a book written by a medical professional turned conspiracy thinker (á la Robert Malone) in which he supposedly “unravels” the “Covid plot”. People eat these grand narratives up and the ones weaving them make good money off of it.

That part of the having to look for people to tell them what they think about issues they have no possible interaction with used to be true 20 years ago as well. However, back then, people trusted experts. Now, thanks to social media and overconfident anonymous trolls and disinformation, that ttust is gone. I honestly prefer to base on what experts say and I shouldnt be afraid of admitting I dont know.
There is one other issue at play here. I notice in my research field, expertise in one field is no longer enough to form meaningful solutions to modern problems. So cooperation between experts in several fields in an institution or several ones is the best. However, it also means you cant ask a specific person on all the intricate details. Only AI can save us now.
As an immigrant and as a conservative Republican, I am so embarrassed that so many people of my party are believing in all of this nonsense and stupid conspiracy theories! I stopped watching PBD a few months ago because he shifted to the far right recently and keeps giving airtime to so many stupid guests and crazy conspiracies theories!

Maybe like, culturally he wants to align with conservative values and popculture, but as far as politics and policy goes he's not very conservative. He's a registered independent and votes for democrats or not at all. He's a liberal, whether he likes it or not, with an a-politic/apathetic bend to his politics and perspectives. And the aforementioned bias towards right wing pop culture/zeitgeist.
