There’s a reason why Walter says “die matte ist heilig” translating to the mat is sacred. These men take wrestling seriously which I love. This is what real wrestling is!

Legend has it that when the person who invented the axe to chop down trees, it was because they saw WALTER hitting people in the chest and wanted to try and re-enact it on inanimate objects. After they broke their hand, they decided to just make the axe instead.

I hate that no one taps anymore, but at the same time if they are going to "pass out" I wish they would make it more realistic.
I'm just glad that my gut was wrong. I started to think that they were going to add outside interference by Dunne, which would've cheapened the match. I'm glad they just let Walter and Ilja square up one on one.

We got Keith Lee instead which werent too disapointing 😂 Walter and Lesnar would tear the house down in a proper match. Lesnars strong enough to throw walter around but Brock would sell Walters hard hitting offense really well and make him look like a real threat

My oldest brother is a casual. He started a little off with Ilyas music, then Walter's look didn't impressive. I said just watch the match, he was more engaged and into the fight then I've seen in long time
The "Sports Presentation" that people longed for is this match. No flips, no dives, no going to the outside, no unnecessary run ins. Just two technical wrestlers telling a story. Wrestling I long for.
With regards to the referee of the match, at least she knows how to be a ref and enforce rules, unlike that attention seeking pain in the ass, Aubrey Edwards.

Aubrey knows how to ref a match. Or at least she did. Unfortunately AEW forced that part of her gimmick out. They took her name and took her gimmick. This sounds like someone.... Hmmmm, Vince
However, it is important to note that this kind of match can't be replicated by all performers on the card nor should it. There are always going to be the high flyers and the brawlers and the grapplers and the personalities, it's what wrestling has been since the 50s with El Santo, The Sheik, Lou Thesz and Gorgeous George. Every wrestler needs room to express their own individual talent, and not all of them will look as grounded and serious as this, but it is essential in almost every gimmick and match to keep some level of authenticity and realism, and WALTER vs. Ilja Dragunov's I and II are a perfect example of that.

Finally!! This match is the perfect embodiment of "Pro Wrestling" this is how u book a David vs Goliath match different size and strength but same ferocity ,aggression and sheer will to win. In ring storytelling at best..👌

It's so refreshing to have a match even Cornette could enjoy and he can appreciate in these modern times. It makes my happy to hear Cornette happy about a modern match.
Well, WALTER vs Ilja is exactly the kind of wrestling Cornette envisions and I totally agree with him.
@@christiankarlkarganilla2763 if you listen to him though, he's not really opposed to high-flying stuff too, as long as it is really used properly and logically. In short, he just wants a wrestling show in which the matches are not shitty, super fake matches. And most fans should agree.
Been waiting for this. No flips, hard hitting, told a story and kept everything within the ropes.

It’s like some wrestlers outside of Japan, US and Canada take pro wrestling more seriously. European wrestlers like Walter and Ilja get it. They take it seriously and would give their best for it.

Uh, the Japanese take wrestling pretty serious. Look up Kenoh vs. Sakuraba (NOAH), Marifuji vs. Miyahara (AJPW) or Utami vs. Syuri (Stardom) before running your mouth about something you obviously don't watch.

This match had me go through three stages. At first, I figured this would be a great retread of their previous bout but with fans in attendance, and with a similar outcome. Then, At a certain point towards the climax I started the get that feeling in my gut, that butterfly feeling that Dragunov might get the miracle victory here. Then it happened. Ilja cranked in that sleeper hold like a gladiator subduing a lion and Walter didn't just tap out, he tapped out *for his damn life*
There are VERY few moments in wrestling (hell, all of entertainment) that make me jump out of my seat and scream "F*** Yes!", but this match had me waking the neighbors. Long live the Czar
I popped so hard I needed a cigarette after the match and I don't even smoke. My God it was great.
That was what I got. He's not accepting a loss he's tapping out to save his life. Because it looked like Ilya was ready to kill him for that win. Greatest title match I've ever seen.
In a way Dragunov kinda reminds me of Chris Benoit only in the intensity he has during his matches & he's a smaller guy but he's jacked so when he hits Walter with a German suplex u can believe it. This match was pro wrestling in a world of sports entertainment. Thank u Walter & Dragunov!
Now that you say it, I do feel the same way. Benoit had that tortured facial expressions which made the intensity in his matches even more believable. Ilja has similar kind of facial expressions too.
Imagine Chris Benoit with 5 more inches in height and 50 more pounds in weight, now that's a wrestling superstar.

In a better world, we might have gotten to see matches like Benoit vs a bryan danielson or dragunov. Hell, maybe even WALTER vs Benoit.

Walter should either go for the NXT belt or a main roster belt. No point having him win the UK Title again. 870 days. He did everything he could with that. No need for another reign.

Dragunov is like a combination of Finn Balor and Chris Benoit.
He has intensity, charisma, technique and style just like them
Crazy Uncle Dave had to reluctantly give it 5+ stars - but that the Bucks have higher ratings than this shows you how irrelevant his ratings now are.
This was one of the best matches I’ve seen from the past 5 or so years, perhaps even longer.

Walter is the perfect heel to me seriously.
Ilja is the rare kind of foreign baby face that has that babyface looks, muscularity, and uses high flying moves logically.
NXT UK is where the Mecca of modern wrestling is.
I completely disagree with the ref thing! I could care less who was the third in ring. All I cared about was the match! And it was great!
I'm in the same boat... ilja started taking heavy bumps and she went "please stop this it's ok you don't have to keep going"

Honestly as great as ilja is at selling, I believed he was in pain just from the color on his chest from those insane chops.
My dad used to watch the cards at the old showboat arena here in Vegas and said how this match took him back to being young watching two of the best wrestle
At some point, wrestlers began to cater their “performances” to the wrestling audience instead of trying to make it look like a real, legit, fight.
These two matches are the exceptions.

The best thing about Walter is he rarely wrestles on TV. So when he does, you know you're seeing something special and important
Not to mention in Grimes vs Knight the same ref hit a 3 count very blatantly but just acted like nothing happened and everyone continued with the match as if Knight didn't just win the match
Walter would have fit PERFECTLY in AJPW in the 80s and 90s and NOAH on the early 00s. Imagine the matches with the likes of Misawa, Kobashi, Kawada etc...he's such a throwback.
This match was so good, I didn’t even notice the referee the entire time.
I wish all pro wrestling was like this, I will start watching it again then, for now I just pick matches I think I'd like, and this was FANTASTIC. Would love to see Walter vs Joe for the NXT title.

Jessika Karr was the ref? I honestly didn't notice. That email was ridiculous. I'm not the biggest fan of female referees either but nobody touched her. I could see if it was one of these matches with 6 ref bumps. I wouldn't want Walter landing on her either,but she was fine though. This match was WAY better than the first one. Like The Second Undertaker Shawn Michaels match after everyone lost their minds over the first one. They wrestled. I am not a fan of these matches where they just beat the cr*p out of eachother until it is time to end the match. This one told a story,there was a point to everything they did from start to finish. This lead to this,that lead to that. I didn't love it as much as Jim did but I enjoyed it way more than the first one.
If only these guys were around during the ruthless aggression era with Kurt angle, Brock Lesnar, chris. Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, fit finlay, etc. the chemistry would’ve been insane
When i saw walter tap my first reaction was "holy sh*t he is going to the main roster". This thought made me excited and sad at the same time

It was the perfect match for violence and storytelling for me and dragonuv being that hard nosed challenger sold it for me. Just sucks that we might not get to see him on a regular basis.

And that what we germans could see over 6 years in wXw a german indy company. They had such an awesome run as a company with so many awesome storylines and matches like ilja vs walter or ilja vs absolute andy. It was honest and a lot of fun

Im so happy to see wXw Guys getting the attention they deserve. Both of them always had great matches here no matter how big the audience. You cant force these matches, they just happen when people with immeasurable love and passion for wrestling get the freedom to create this. Just look at the footage you can find of them from any wXw 16 carat gold with them, its always worth it. Or the documentary about Ilja. Guy went from having nothing to stealing the show at NXT in a decade.
This was the best match , they couldn’t follow this up. All the matches that came after were flatter because the crowds gave their all for this match.
Saddest part here is that it happened in an arena with like 100 people or something, NXT takeover needed a full arena for that match
Imagine if we were getting something like this every week on AEW as opposed to a 30 minute Young Bucks match.
This is the future of wrestling.
I think their might be the momentum growing to turn it to where its not all like this, but they present more and more real wrestling because they know their fan base is demanding it. They'll also still have to have the kids shit, but remember even at the height of WWE we got ridiculous angles designed for teenagers that are wretched looking back without nostalgia mixed with good wrestling.
Cornette saying questionable things during the sponsorship ads is my new favorite gimmick.

Like, if the two competitors are just there to beat the brakes off each other and not do some bs ref bumps, the sex, gender, etc of the Ref is kinda irrelevant to me. IDK, maybe that's just me being "progressive" or whatever you wanna call it.

Walter's chops knock the sound out of me through the screen. Everytime he chopped Ilja, he reminded me of an old school parent that could hit you so hard that they silenced you. Knock the sound right out of you

There was a storyline element with Ilja snapping after WALTER chopping him at the back as it was the psychological trauma he felt after experiencing it in the prior instant classic match with WALTER. Thus the chop at the back was the trigger making him a madman.

I love this match. It doesn't need to be hardcore or needing fancy flying acrobatics to catch people's eye, this is just pure wrestling at its finest. Well done to ilja and walter.

This is the match you show your friends when they say “you still watch wrestling? Isnt it fake” you show them THIS MATCH not main roster garbage. Match of the year in my opinion.
Better than any aew match if aew had Walter they would having have a competitive match with stunted growth .

Just went out of my way to watch this, match is great like Jim said. I do feel like towards the ending it did get a bit Indy like where I felt like they should've gotten to the ending a bit quicker when they were focusing on moves. But nothing silly was done, and Ilja constantly getting the sleeper on Walter was great.
These 2 guys are amazing! That might have been my favorite match of the year so far.

I loved this match. Just watching their faces, the match looked like it was happening in 1938.
what I like about Ilja Dragonuv is the old school of wrestling psychology he shows in the ring.

this match was perfect, I felt every match after this was no where near the calibre and the brutality , I haven't winced and gasped watching a match since watching the rock vs mankind at the Royal rumble 1999 when Foley. took 11 unprotected chair shots to the head

Two wrestlers doing realistic attacks on each other that they know they can take isn't "reckless". A bunch of Hardy Boyz wannabes doing ridiculous aerial moves whose impact or success the opponent can't control, is.
Love these guys, very inspirational and I want my future matches to be violent like these too
