Bismuth hi I love your videos
Super Chill Gamer agreed
I love u too
I'll wait for it!
L16htW4rr10r he doesn’t upload that frequently,it is very lucky that he upload. It makes my day.
This is the best framerule explanation not involving a bus I've ever heard
I missed the bus.
So you think the bus explanation is better?
Chris Elliott i think the bus explanation is cliché
I thought it was changed to a uber now.
The explanation in the video actually explains WHY the framerule is a thing, which is nice. The bus analogy works, but this is more to-the-point IMHO
23:04 Here you see Kosmic temporarily reducing his heartbeat to zero by triggering an intense, meditative state akin to ego-deathing on DMT in order to spiritually connect to Shigeru Miyamoto, giving him strength and determination for the rest of the run.
What if there's no ayahuasca shaman available an i'm not proficient in zen-buddhism? Can i still become a top tier speedrunner by just rolling some ket into a phat blunt and hoping for the best?

IK that he meant that the PLANT disappears.

In this clip we can see Kosmic stop his heart for about two seconds. This speedrunning trick, known as Heart Failure (HF) gets adrenaline pumping and makes his inputs more precise. This is extremely hard to pull off.

You gotta love how these old games written in Assembly can be exploited with something as simple as a shared memory address, back in the days where every byte counted.
My guess is that flagpole glitch exists because there was probably a bug during development that would make Mario slide through the floor and die if he grabbed the flagpole in a certain way. They likely added a failsafe to skip the flag lowering scene if Mario went below the pole. Then later on the bug ended up getting fixed but the failsafe was left in.
Yeah. I definitely understood everything almost....
Or, in original plans Mario could just walk to flagpoles.
i think the generally agreed upon intention is to make the flag go down by varying heights depending on where you grab it from, it was just implemented incorrectly
19:49 Breaking: Kosmic dies in middle of world-record-breaking speedrun, but is reincarnated just in time.
Good companion piece to Summoning Salt's latest video.

"bismuth has proclaimed this to be the run

And So it was.
9:27 can perform hundreds of frame-perfect tricks in a row but can't manage to hit frame perfect pedal hits, smh.
I watch other speedrun videos and they say "this trick is not used in runs as it is extremely precise fame perfect trick".
My reaction is "smb1 Speedrunners can do that, it is even running at half the frame rate so it is a 2 frame trick to them"
LMAO 😂!
@@TazerXI Well, it may be extremely risky or may be a long run. Or, the game isn’t optimized yet.
@@jatloe the game is definitely optimised. It is at the end of it though, after over an hour. If you want to know it was carpet less in sm64 120 star. I forgot how hard frame perfect I puts are, and that they still reset thousands of runs

I've watched a lot of videos about the any% speedrun and I never knew it was necessary for players to hit the star block in 8-1. I always thought they did it for fun!
Thank you for this fantastic video! I loved learning every tidbit and detail you mentioned. Lastly, congratulations to Kosmic for achieving this time!
i already know the knowledge, but i aint skipping the video lol
0:00 Wow, that's a really high heart-rate for someone sitting down.
resting heart rates vary wildly among individuals for a variety of variables beyond cardiovascular exercise. a resting bpm of 90 is not that unusual.
@@58209 I was commenting on right at the start, where his sitting heart rate gets to a tad over 160, about equivalent to a brisk run.
@@wfjhDUI A world record run usually doesn't happen on the first run of the day. You'll sit down and do several attempts in a row. His heart rate at the start of this run is not a normal, sitting, resting heart rate, but rather that of the previous run where something unexpected happened, losing him the possibility of the record. When that happens, you don't wait for your heart rate to calm down (not every time, at least), you just hit reset and try again.
@@DashRetro Yeah I understand the cause and I didn't mean my comment in any sort of critical way. It's just a little interesting/surprising that excitement can get your heart rate higher than even a typical jog which would actually be increasing the oxygen demand of large muscle groups.
@@wfjhDUI Indeed, nerves are crazy!

I really liked the fact that you didn't assume prior knowledge. It was good to remember some old explanation and even see some new ones. Like the more on depth explanation of the flagpole sub-pixel position tied to items. xD
He didn't even stop to get infinite 1 ups! He's clearly an amateur.
amateur is not worthy for him hes a god
The fact that a quarter second slowdown by touching a pipe in 8-4 was nearly enough to tank a run shows how stupidly optimized SMB runs are. Almost any other game has space for errors, SMB records require new strats and finding ways to make TAS tricks work.
I've always heard of speedruns in passing but lately I've been into it and the hard work gamers go through to do it. Thanks for explaining stuff that I don't quite understand.
What an amazing run... and a fantastic explanation!
This video really highlighted how the way it was coded allowed these tricks to occur. I learned a lot from this, and it makes the achievements of these speedrunners all the more impressive!
I am more amazed by the 90+ resting heart rate.
Grats to Kosmic for the sub 19 run!
7:51 bismuth literally predicting the future 👀
I recently found your channel through summoning salt! You do amazing analysis and help me, who's never touched a speedrun ever, to grasp and understand it. Keep up the good work, mate!
I feel like I’d have an easier time putting a man on mars than I would trying to dissect a game enough to discover half the shit that goes into speed running tricks
In a way that's literally true thanks to the power of parallel processing. More man hours go into some games than the entire space program. Especially when some of the games have a huge head start compared to a relatively recent program goal.
I've just realized there was a connection between Super Mario Bros. 1 and Super Mario 64:
You accelerate faster backwards.
Well in smb64 you dont acceralate faster backwars you "travel" faster backwards
Kinda
This is the best CZcams video I have ever seen
Lol dude I have no idea why I find this interesting , I won’t ever play Mario 2 or whatever again. But geesh the amount of dedication their putting into this I respect.
How to explain framerules to normal people: Imagine a bus...
Me trying to catch a bus: If i run I can save a framerule!
No
Why run when you can BLJ? Better yet, why not buy a Big Rig, and tear the existence apart as you go to work?
If you bomb clip through the bus door, you can save a few more frames but there's a risk of dying, injury, or being seized by the authorities. I prefer not to use that strategy.
'When Mario goes down on the flag pole...' There's children in here good sir!
A long shot from when I played it in the early 90's! Now it's down to a science and evaluating it by frames, pixels, hit box detection...all things that I was unaware of as a kid. Just crazy...
Thanks for providing times to skip explanations and even adding annotations. I like when people respect my time :)
Oh no my bus is gone, now have to wait till next year :(
2-frame window, pixel perfect, 1 pixel, 1 frame, 2 frames, 21 frames. Simple enough.

So much insight. Really enjoyable. Many thanks for making this understandable!
I love how Kosmic jumps and throws fireballs to the music every so often.
I think the reason why framerules are a thing is actually a bit different than you described. As far as I know, SMB just has a global timer, wich decrements every 21 frames. That timer is used for multiple things, such as RNG, and also to time the small pause befor the black level-end screen, as well as the duration it is up. So those things can only last a multiple of 21 frames.
Do you know anyone who disassembled the game and actually checked which of these is true?
@@paulstelian97 I just checked the disassembly. Smb has a standardized system for Timers. These timers will either decrement every frame or every 21st frame, depending on the timer (the 21 frame rythm is unchanging from game start ). These long-term timers include the level-end and the black-screen timer. The RNG actually just changes every frame, and the perfect timing makes it consistent.
@@toboterxp8155 hah, now I'm actually interested in exploring the code myself!
@@paulstelian97 just google "comprehensive super mario bros disassembly". It's in 6502 assembly language though.
