  • We had been working on our Off Grid caravanning skills, at three amazing free camps when we got caught out by a fast-moving grass fire! We didn't panic but we were concerned. Check out what we did next! Travelling from Darwin to Katherine there are quite a few free camping areas along the way and we get to stay at a few of them. Come and join us as we share some tips and tricks for off grid camping and show you this awesome area.

If we see you camped up in the bush somewhere strumming away there will be a singalong for sure, great vid. 👍

We're just a little ahead of you guys. In Mary K atm, I have been wondering why you always seem to favour caravan parks. I had never really thought that off grid camping is a skill. Thanks for bringing it up. We have been our for 8 years and have been off grid for 95% of that time. Keep up the good work guys. We love seeing people our age exploring. Most of the videos are young 'unsure.

8 years! Wow that’s great, it is a good lifestyle. We didn’t think we would spend so much time in van parks and hope to change that going forward. We think it was partly because of the convenience and often location, maybe a sense of security? Hopefully we cross paths on our travels
      Cheers Paul and Wenda

Thanks we find the off grid stuff is more enjoyable when you know what you’re doing 😉 It was a bit unsettling seeing the fire coming towards us and you could hear the cracking of the fire as well!
      Cheers Paul and Wenda

Great vid. Thanks. Hopefully this is a helpful tip: charge your phones, torches, and other usb devices off of your car crank battery as you drive (car 12v and usb outlets). This means at least they're all charged before you stop, and you don't need to use so much of your house battery.

Don’t leave that battery pac out overnight, it may not be there in the morning.
Put a solar panel on the cruiser, it’ll keep up with your fridge
You can play your guitar around my campfire anytime you like 👍

    • @beyondthegreyoz
      @beyondthegreyoz  Před rokem

Haha no we pack it away at night. We had thought about adding a solar panel as we have nothing on the roof of the car?
Definitely up for a few tunes around the campfire 😉
      Cheers

Yeah we rarely went off grid because of the power issues but now we figured it out, we plan to do a lot more

Your reviews of free camping sites are so informative and enticing - can't wait to do the same soon. Interesting point about turning off the inverter to save power - thanks for that.

Thanks, yeah seems the more you learn the easier it becomes. There’s nothing worse than being off grid and being to scared to flick a light switch

Yep it is def a skill and one that one city master will give you untold rewards of solitude and beautiful spots….
Solar: rule of thumb is double solar on roof to battery capacity - and turn off as much as you can as you have found.
Also a good BCDC charger in the car eg: BCDC1250 so you get max output when driving to charge the van along with high quality 16 core cable to run from car to van…
As for water - 300 litres should do you two for 10 days …
It is all an experience and something you can get a lot from …
Stay safe up there with the local folks!

  • @twocoddiwompletravellers

Off Grid is the best type of camping as far as we are concerned......if we ever run out of power we just make sure we have battery lamps we can use and have an early night lol
