- Do you know what are the top ten biggest cities in the United States of America? You'd be surprised at how much things have changed since COVID-19. Population numbers are for the cities themselves, not the larger metropolitan areas. The numbers are based off of the US Census Bureau's estimations!

Similar to Germany, where a "Large City" (Großstadt) starts at 100,000 inhabitants. We have 82 of them. Place 300 has 38,929 unhabitants.

The rubber ducky squeak really made this!... Seriously, this was very interesting. It underscores how many sun belt suburbs have dwarfed the old cities back east and north. Of course city limits population and metro populations are two very different things. And the huge number of wintertime only residents in places like the Phoenix area (particularly Mesa) and several Florida and California cities complicate population totals. (I worked for the U.S. Census Bureau for 24 years and learned all about the nebulous nature of local population totals.)

Really good job, except you labeled Pasadena, TX as Pasadena, CA. There are two Pasadenas and you labeled them both as California.

It's surprising how many of these cities I know or at least have heard of. The ones that I'm least likely to know seem to be some suburban California municipalities.
Can you make a larger list like this with the top 500 or top 1000 cities in the US as well?

Salinas, California was one of America's fastest growing cities of over 100,000 people during the 1980s. I was excited to see this top 10 ranking in USA Today for my hometown, after the 1990 census. It seems to have fallen from 163,542 population in the Census to 159,000. Salinas, like all of California seems to be maturing. Our growth was spoiling us.
Salinas is losing about 2% of its population annually. It made the list of being one of the most desirable cities in the US to live in. The crime rate is too terrible, so why are people leaving???
I wish you had included the state names. I’m not familiar with every state flag.

31:04 - Newport News was the 100th most populous city in 1990, because the South and West started surging.
I do find it a bit odd that you included some suburbs of cities and did not include others. Hempstead, NY would have an estimated population of 789k and would be #17.
It's not odd because Hempstead is technically a town that's made up of three municipalities. South Hempstead, West Hempstead and Oyster Bay. If we were to measure population like that, Las Vegas would be around 2M.
@@arejayerobsterlife5653 I honestly think it would have been better just to do metropolitan statistical area populations. A very defined area that shows the expansion and influence of the city. A lot of your more eastern cities never expanded city limits much. Yea, it would leave out some cities, but it would still show a lot more realistic populations.
@@BBGOnYT There are a lot of videos that do that out there. None do the entire list of metros but nobody has done a video covering the three hundred largest cities either.
@@arejayerobsterlife5653 Slight misinformation there, you are thinking of Nassau County which is broken up into 3 different towns: Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay. Each of those is a separate municipality and is not included in the same population count you are thinking of. Additionally, while you are correct that South Hempstead and West Hempstead are both located in the town of Hempstead, both of those are considered "hamlets" which means they do not have a local government and rely entirely on the town to handle local services (South Hempstead only has a population of 3k). So I feel it isn't fair in this case to not include Hempstead.
New York in general (and especially Long Island) has a very weird definition of what is considered a "town" versus a "city" and in any other state Hempstead would be named a city.

Yep! It was bound to happen....
Big cities care a lot more about revenue from occupational taxes than property and income taxes, so they aren't too worried about declining population numbers. They bring in industries with tax breaks, then tax the workers, many of whom don't live in the city limits. It's the reverse welfare state you never hear about, where the income is redistributed upward.

I chose to use flags, that's not a mistake. I goofed on a few. Probably less than 20 out of 300, if that! I like flags... and I wanted to highlight some of the newer state flags!

City limits are misleading...do the 300 top Metro areas of the US.
It's actually not misleading. But I'll do the 300 Metropolitan Areas as well! Some are getting large while some are decreasing!
@@arejayerobsterlife5653 I wasn't saying that you were misleading...you followed the data of city limits. All I was saying is that city limits really don't give a real picture of the area. For example, Atlanta looks relatively small if only measured by city limits while the metro area is over 6,000,000 and in the top 10 in the nation. I was confused at first because you said 300 cities in America, you should have said the USA. I'm from Canada and to me Canada the USA and Mexico are all part of North America. I guess only Americans refer to the USA as America, when actually all three countries are in America, (North America).
Yes sir. Americans normally shorten the USA to America, most of the world does it too...Maybe for the exception of the rest of North America.
