We stayed in a bed and breakfast in Cooperstown, NY, that was staffed by Amish young ladies. Years ago I lived near Lancaster County, PA, and I have 2 quilts that I got at an Amish auction in Strasburg. They are treasures.
I'm glad you touched on Chautauqua County settlements. My Amish neighbors are some of the best friends you'd ever want to meet. I've been to most of the businesses you pictured- even the Carriage shop in Conewango. The carriage maker had to make me a new set of shafts for my cart when the horse broke them! That shop is right over the County line, in Cattaraugus County.

Neat to hear that, sounds like you are in a great area for Amish. I think the one of all of these I'd like to visit is Mahlon Shetler's watch/clock business. I'm really glad you are liking the videos, they're a lot of work to put together, to include the right photos, etc. but I hope they provide people a good guide to Amish in each state and benefit Amish as well by promoting visiting their shops and businesses (which is one of my own favorite things to do, so I'm always glad to cover that topic 👍)
I used to spend time in Cherry creek at my Aunt and Uncle's property. My Uncle did business with an Amish sawmill and a blacksmith in Leon. I worked with a man who was the town supervisor of Cherry creek in the 70's, he had a great relationship with the Amish community. Beautiful area of New York.
Yup I know the clock shop, on the corner of the midwifes road! I’ve driven one or two women there

Seneca County reporting in, and the only error I heard was Ovid. It has a long O.
Have seen horse and buggy tied to lampposts in a shopping center parking lot. One time, the driver had bought some lumber, which was sticking out the back of the buggy. I saw him walking toward the grocery store there. This is Schwartzentruber Amish, as there was no slow-moving-vehicle triangle on the buggy, or any reflective tape. This was in northern Onondaga County, with the Amish living in Oswego County. Wish I knew more about the Amish in Oswego County. I understand that there are some Amish in the northwest corner of Onondaga County, someone told me.
The Amish from northern St Lawrence county used to travel to Massena to shop at the Walmart in fairly large groups. It was not unusual to have an entire section of the parking lot filled with buggies tied up and waiting.
Their numbers are increasing in the St Lawrence and Franklin Counties, NY.

They may live simpler lives but it's amazing how progressive the amish around Clymer are in business.
Hes retired now but Wally was the service manager at the New Holland dealer along with several mechanics and they all used the computers and worked on all the modern equipment.
If that one picture was of the building supply company it was an old one. They've expanded several times, built a house and ball field. I would say there was easily a million$$$$ in lumber sitting in the yard, no doubt a multi-million $$$ business.
That picture is some years old so sounds like it is a good bit bigger now, good to know. Just curious is the ball field meant for the local Amish youth? It is interesting to see Amish dip into use of technology in the workplace but keep it out of the home (at least for the most part). I think there is something healthy about those kinds of bounds, if you are going to use it, versus the typical English "always plugged in" approach (I can be guilty of that one I'll admit)
I’m from Oswego County & you pronounced correctly.
I lived in Norfolk NY in St Lawrence County and there were Amish in Norfolk (the Amish have an amazing Cheese Shop in town) and the community was spread out through Chase Mills and Madrid. They were fairly conservative people but very friendly and personable. I know of a contractor who did house construction and one family butchering business that traveled out to my sister's farm to butcher her pigs and get them packaged up for Winter. I am not sure where they fit into all these New York communities or where they originated, but meeting and living among these people was a really great experience!
Lowville happens to rhyme with "cow ville". It's very snowy there.

I grew up on a small dairy farm in Steuben county NY.
My brother converted the farm into organic hay, wrapped hay and small grain products
He did business with the Amish community in the Prattsburgh New York and Wheeler Hill areas
On summer “vacations” I spent several years traveling from NC to work with my father and brother on our farm
During that time I went to the Amish community several times each summer. Many small businesses were there, including a furniture shop that we were invited to tour. It was fascinating to see how cleverly all the machines were belt-driven from underneath the floor powered by a Diesel engine
Orleans county has a few Amish businesses including a bulk food and bakery, a general store, metal shop, and various greenhouses. I had done business with a lumber mill, but the family relocated to Montana when our politicians were proposing that they had to follow child labor laws that would have prevented the younger kids from working at the mill. The 2 boys who at the time were in their teens were incredibly strong and loved teasing myself and the older gentleman I was with. Great people !
Neat to hear about that area, sounds like you have a good array of Amish businesses covered there. And sorry to hear the family was spurred to leave (though Montana might not be a bad place to live and a lot of new communities have been popping up there). Do you know when the labor law issue was happening? I recall the issue appearing somewhere, but it was probably 10 years or more since I'd last seen it in the media

I live in Steuben County. My hubby and I are friends with the community in Jasper. My husband often drives for them. He also fishes with them. A family took my little grand daughter on a buggy ride as well as a pony ride. When they go shopping, they SHOP BIG TIME. It fills our van...lol. we have visited many different other areas both in NY state, PA, and Ohio when taking our friends to visit family. We always take our little dog along on our travels. They think it's funny that I treat my little Peanut, a chiweenie like a baby. They laugh when I dress him up.

Very good video! Note that Fort Plain is located in Montgomery county. There are hitching posts and poop scoops at many businesses in this town and many towns around.

I love watching ur videos on the Amish I've always been interested in their ways of living. I'm from PA but have lived in NY for the last 4 yrs in Cattaraugus County and I'm surprised u could pronounce these weird names correct only because when I first moved here I pronounced them different and my fiance had to correct me and it took me alittle while to be able to say them properly but I got them down now 😁

I congratulate you on your pronunciation of Conewango, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua!! Although my family is "English," our roots go back to before the Amish settled here. We are really amused by current affairs, worries about shortages, and "preppers" fears of EMPs to which the Amish would say, "huh?"
I live near a growing Amish community in Newark Valleys, NY. Some surnames there are Yoder and Hostetler. I will check out your website. Tomorrow, January 6, they celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany (Old Christmas as some call it). Loved your video.

Great video. My father's family descended from the Amish in Lancaster County, PA which is the oldest Amish in the US and they've always held a spot in my heart. I drove through Heuvelton, NY on Monday this week on my way back to Boston and I was shocked at the amount of Amish farms since I had last been up there.....literally dozens of farms and they were like bees on the street, in the farms, kids/women/men. Wow they have really multiplied in that area. Their farms are immaculate and they always have a wave when you pass, they may seem strange to some folks but to me they are the salt of the earth.

I live near Altmar, NY, and have employed Amish people at my home for various projects. It seems most of the Amish men have the last name of Swartzentruber. I had employed two Swartzentruber men to do siding on my home. There was a problematic issue at one point, and the head man, Ruben, claimed we could use a Sawz-All. (He knew the name). I went to the basement, got my Sawz-All, and brought it to him, but he shied away from it, and asked me to use it! It remains a mystery to me what "modern" conveniences they will use, and which they shy away from. Whatever the tool or machine is, a decision must be made as to whether it is "too handy". By the way, the Swartzentrubers do not use phones. These are honorable and pleasant people.

I have Amish families tagged on Google maps. It helps since I get calls for rides. My local community has "business" phones.
I am originally from NY and lived the vast majority of my life there. I knew of Mennonite communities but I never knew about the Amish communities. Most people think of New York City when they think of New York. The truth is that the vast majority of NY state is nothing like the city. I still was surprised to hear that the land was affordable, even in upstate NY. Usually, the taxes alone can be burdensome. Hopefully, there will be a resurgence in farming and farming communities in New York State. It is a beautiful state that would be much better off if NYC seceded, lol. I'm only half kidding. Most upper portions of NY state are beautiful and the residents are wonderful folks.

The taxes in upstate NY are ridiculously low compared to Downstate NY. You could buy a Middle Class Home in a small city like Norwich, NY for $75,000, nice beautiful home ready to move in . Property Taxes are less than $1000 a year. Same home on Long Island- $15,000 property tax.
Move to Upstate NY if you wanna live cheap. I don't wanna hear people complain about taxes up there, just insane.

Was someone complaining about the taxes previously? You're right about taxes upstate, BUT it depends on where a person considers upstate to be. So, where you consider "downstate", many people consider "upstate". Most people that are originally from NYC consider Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Dutchess counties as "upstate". Some people even consider Northern Westchester as upstate. So, to those people the taxes "upstate" are also high. I know that it is laughable to the people that are actually form "UPSTATE", lol. We left what we considered "upstate" New York over a decade ago and for a 1/3 acre property with a single family home, we were paying about $12,000 a year. That was over a decade ago and that still was lower than Long Island and many other areas. It was just ANOTHER reason to leave

Your videos are very informative. Would you be able to do one in the future about Amish and education? Also how do Amish meet the needs of individuals with learning disabilities or special needs like autism etc?
I'll be doing at least one or two on Amish education coming up. I'm not sure how deep I'll go into special needs and related, but there is this post on that topic in the meantime: amishamerica.com/amish-special-needs-children/ Amish do see all children as blessings and provide education for those with special needs, though as with most things Amish, approaches can vary

I was also wondering what the Amish schools do for Special Education, because I have a Severely Autistic daughter. I suspect that there aren't as many cases of Autism and similar disabilities in the Amish population, but I could be mistaken.
@@web9254 The Washington Post did 2015 article on this topic. "Amish schools find ways to serve special needs kids". The bummer part is the article is behind their pay wall.
TL;DR they do try to get their children help. Even the ones that are severely handicapped.
I'm in south western Ontario, Canada where there are several Amish farms. Most of them are named Yoder or Stutzman. There was a funeral this week for an Amish woman. There were hundreds (literally) of Amish attending the funeral. I'm used to my neighbour coming to use the phone to call a vet or get a ride to town. But this week several from out of town came to use the phone and arrange to get picked up at the train station. One was going to Brockville, Ontario and needed a ride to New York. So he would be from one of the communities close to the St. Lawrence. He was only allowed to use a phone for emergencies and arranging transport. I know "my" Amish also have relatives in Minnesota and Tennessee
We live in Otsego County and just love the Amish. I used to have a large van and drove the the Amish around. Such a pleasure.

In the repair shop. The Amish were said when I traded for a truck for my farm but we are still good friends.
Come to visit Millers market on highway 104 near Ridgeway,N.Y...... produce, meats , bakery items,all kinds of goodies and the best made to order sandwiches ever..outside sheds. Near by a furniture shop and a true Amish fabric shop. Wineries are nearby.
In Livingston county in the town Groveland there is an Amish farm that everyone calls the Donut Farm. In warm weather every Saturday morning there is a line of cars waiting for them to open at 9am. I go to their farm to buy eggs.

@@AmishAmerica I live in Charlotte Hall (not from here). I enjoy visiting the local Amish store and farmers market. I even had the privilege of going to their quilt auction in November.

There also a fairly large one around Choteau, Oklahoma.
Living quite near to New Wilmington PA we find quite a lot of Amish businesses, and I've never seen a single item of any kind for sale that wasn't money well spent. I guess it's easy to romanticize the Amish way of life, philosophy of living, and strong ethics, but personally I admire them greatly. I have family in France who came to visit - not terribly impressed generally with America, except for the Amish, who they said were the only reason they'd ever want to move here! There are no Amish in Europe now, even though they originated there.
Everything is top quality.
I know know a lot of these people, we service their sewing machines.
Goodness, I have a pretty good understanding of the language (my grandfather was born in Germany and his mother tongue was Deutsch)
You can buy an acre of land in NY for $1000, that's why the Amish are coming to NY. Many remote areas in NY and the Amish like that. As soon as you leave NYC and cross the George Wash. Bridge, you get on the Palisades Parkway going North and you feel like you're driving thru a Wilderness. One minute you're in the South Bronx, the next minute in Deer Country. All the way from NYC up to the Canadian border is rural/wilderness with small cities here and there. NY is almost the same size as New England, 6 x bigger than NJ. It's also a Sportsman's paradise.
I’m around Middletown Ny and I only really know about 1 amish family yeah there’s a lot more but the one I know are pretty nice. Some of the kids my age came to work with me and my dad and it was really shocking that they were actually talkative and didn’t have the personality of a brick wall. I gave them their first cans of monster and they were thrilled I didn’t know Some amish didn’t drink soda or energy drinks😂

In your county list you missed a couple of counties with large communities. That would be ontario and Yates counties. Both have great businesses .
No actually the list should be accurate as of publication. Someone had a similar comment a few weeks ago - the communities in Ontario and Yates counties are actually Old Order Mennonite, who also use the horse-and-buggy, dress plain, etc. But they are not Amish, so not included here. But that's really neat to have both Old Order Amish and Mennonites nearby.

Right your closest Amish are probably the Mohawk Valley area communities, or possibly in PA. At least that's a closer drive than say, being in southern CA!

Here in upstate, we have Poland, Paris, Rome, New Berlin all sorts of towns. It was funny when my friend came over from England and we went to Niagara Falls. She loved seeing so much of " Europe" in our area lol
I met three brothers from a farm family from Poland when I attended SUNY Geneseo. There is also a Warsaw, NY about 25 miles from Geneseo
Hi Eric, great video on my neck of the woods 👍. I live in the Central NY/Finger Lakes area. If you’re ever in the area, check out Sauders Amish Grocery Store in Seneca Falls. It’s a mecca for all things Amish. I occasionally visit a stand in Scipio Center on route 34 that has some of the best rhubarb jam around 😋
Quick question, if you’re at all familiar with the finger lakes region, we are known for our vineyards and wine. Do you know if the Amish would partake in winemaking? 🍷
Glad you liked it Angela! Thanks for the tip as well, I do like rhubarb. So yes some Amish do make homemade wine, including dandelion wine and beet wine (I've had some of that, not bad). I think Sauders is Mennonite, not Amish. They don't dress in black, but a variety of colors. Also seen some of them driving cars.

I am from state of New York. Yates county and Ontario county have Amish community. I live in town of Potter. I know that outside of the town have Amish community. So do Penn Yan Middlelsex Rushville and more have Amish Community. You nerd to take a new look at the State of New York..
The areas you are discussing have a significant Old Order Mennonite community. They use the horse-and-buggy too, but they are different from Amish. Yates County, and it also goes into Ontario County
My Dad was new oder Mennonite. We had cars. My dad had three full time jobs one was a full time fire chief and one was working for the highway Department and he was our teacher. He work in our land in the weekend. Amish and Mennonite only go up to the 8 grade. He had some friends that was The old order Amish that had horse and buggy. We have Amish and Mennonite in the volunteer fire department in Yates County. I am happy that I am the new oder Mennonite. I know that a Amish and Mennonite can't married a English people. My dad get kick of the Mennonite community because he married my mom who was English.
I am from upstate NY & I am close to Montgomery, Schoharie (first pronunciation was correct, 😆), Herkimer areas… we have shopped at the Picklehill Amish farm in Fort Plain for many years. When we first went to their store they were not as openly friendly but now quite, I guess we have grown on them 😆… thank you so much for sharing. I am a new subscriber!!!

I live approximately 2 1/2 miles from the Pickle Hill Farm.
I also live near the Pickle Hill Bulk Foods. I'm on Highway 31. My neighbors are all Delaware Amish with the black top buggies with rounded bottoms. I'd say they are pretty progressive here considering they go through more fuel than we do. I think they are in vehicles more than we are also. Most are friendly, some are suspicious. All in all, I prefer to have them as neighbors over anybody else.
I lived in Erie County, NY for 10 years, right on the border with Niagara County. That's where I encountered Amish at the train station where I dropped off or picked up my traveling son who preferred trains vs. planes. Not really a conducive place to opening conversations, as families are greeting one another after some time apart, or saying their goodbyes. But anyway, I knew there were Amish in the area. I just didn't know until much later that there were Amish businesses!

I've got it scheduled for within the next 2-3 state videos 👍 Just curious if you can tell me, are they using the pvc pipe reflectors widely now throughout the Lodi community there? I meant to visit last time in Holmes Co but was tight for time. They're attached to the wheels so they make an oscillating attention-getting motion while the buggy is moving. I don't see anything online, which isn't too surprising because though the county has 3 separate communities, all 3 are very small (around 100 Amish total between them). I would recommend doing it the old-fashioned way - take a drive - but at the same time I wouldn't expect a lot in that county. Berkshire, Candor, South Owego are the areas

I own land in Chenango County in Central NY. I was sitting in my car in front of my property and an Amish Buggy Came trotting down my road and passed right by my property. I live on Long Island, the last thing I expected to see was an Amish guy right in front of my property. Such a weird experience to be sitting in a car surrounded by State Forest land , late afternoon and I saw an Amish Buggy like it was the 19th Century. Totally shocked seeing that for the first time in a very remote area . I waved to the Young Amish guy and he waved back. After the Buggy passed, I grabbed my camera and took a picture of the Buggy as it headed away. Based on the Color of the Buggy , I read the Amish guy was associated with a Conservative Amish Sect. The Amish are moving to NY because you can buy an acre of land for $1000. It's probably the cheapest land you can buy in the East.

Actually the “Nebraska Amish” or white topped Amish are the most plain of all the Amish. They are probably also one of the smallest groups and live only in miffin co Pa in a place called big valley.
While at one time they may have been considered that way, and are still quite plain today, on the whole they're not plainer than Swartzentrubers. In at least one or two of the Big Valley groups they use old style cell phones now (there are at least 5 subgroups now within the Nebraska group). Not to mention permitting the orange SMV triangle for many years now, no Swartzentruber churches have ever used that one. But for some time at least they were considered among the plainest, and I think this description can be traced to John A. Hostetler (Amish Society author and native of the area)
