I find that when "quilting as you piece", a longer stitch works best to eliminate the unevenness of the backing. I learned this from using June Taylor quilt as you go kits.

What is calico? Is it a batting? Looks like an easy way to quilt? Correct?

Would it help to use some spray baste to hold the lining to the wadding? Just a thought.
