- In this video I cook som Johnsonville brand Hot Italian Sausages and some Chorizo sausages on my Lodge Sportsman’s Grill. I also cook four burger patties.
It is my favorite grill, a lot of people love the LSG. Some folks really hate it, and they are not ashamed to tell me how much they hate it. That’s OK, I didn’t invite them to eat or watch my video. This grill has been quite popular since 1941! There is a reason for that, it is an awesome grill for folks with grill skills, and it is a lot of fun to use.
I want to sincerely thank Carolina Chris Outdoors. He recently re-enacted a recipe that I did and it really helped my channel. If you are not subscribed to his channel would you please consider doing so. Links to channel and the Jacked Up Shrimp video are below.

It all looked good to me! Ya know I love my Lodge Sportsman's Grill!!! Might be a little more maintenance required on it than other grills, but it'll be here looooong after I'm gone. I like it because a fella really needs to "cook", not just close the lid and come back in an hour.... and the food tastes "grilled"!!! Thanks for the shout out Big Lew, see ya' on the next one!!! 👍🏻
Carolina Chris Outdoors Thank you first, just returning the favor brother. Hope this helps your channel a bit. I also hope and pray everything was ok in the aftermath of Florence.
Flavor is flavor. If you can maximize it then you know what you're doing regardless of the equipment you use. I've found that your old equipment is sometimes better than the latest and greatest fancy gadget. Cooking equipment is like fishing lures some are designed to attract fish others are designed to attract fisherman.
Cooking1.5 Yep!
Don’t know why people are giving you grief about that grill ? My Dad had one and they are very versatile we used it at home and at the lake to either grill or fry fish and it always preformed great ! It may be small but it gets the job done and is very portable!
I think it may have died down. This video has been up a few days now and it's all been positive. Some of the negativity stemmed from my Amazon review that wrote years ago long before I had a you tube channel.
Hey Lew! The LSG, skillet, and lid are True Heavy Metal!!!! Really liked how those onions sweat down to make that sauce. Nice combo of flavors in there! 👍
Heavy Metal Bar-B-Que I heard that Metal is good for one’s health.

Rick from Lake Charles, LA: I have a lot of grills, mostly Weber, but the Sportsman Grill cooks some great food. Thanks for giving me cooking ideas and history lessons.
Rick Cormier Hey Rick, you know I live just south of DeRidder right?
This grill seems to be a cultural standard in our area. Cajun / Bayou Classic cast iron even has some items that fit this grill.
Thanks so much for watching.
You are correct on the origin of the Sportsman Grill originating in Louisiana. In the late 1930's a BSR salesman suggested they change the sad iron heater to have higher sided so it could be used as a fish fryer. Technically it was patented by Atlanta Stove Works in 1941 doing business as BSR. Yes they were the same company since 1938. BSR made the first fish fryer and Lodge started making a Deep Fish Fryer. Both are out of production. BSR transferred ownership of patent of the Sportsman Grill to Lodge to pay off debt before they went out of business in 1957.
I enjoy using my Sportsman Grill and should use it more. If you don't have one you need to find one of those fish fryer pans. I have one and it works great on a two burner stove as well! Nice to see that 12 inch Lodge with a lid. You don't see that big iron with lids often. Fun video thanks for sharing.
Larry Stephens Yes I know this, but I thank you for sharing. I cut this story out of the intro. You can see the edit right after I say Louisiana and then talk about the burgers and sausages.
I do own a BSR 8052 shallow oval fish fryer. I love it and have used it in several videos not just on the LSG!
Thumbs up here!
I use this grill a lot but have to use my other grills as well. What I’ve found is you don’t use very many coals as you don’t have too unless you want the outside cooked before the inside. When using pans you can always add sticks or additional coals if you wish. The key is to learn the grill then you will love the grill. Thanks for the video.
Cmanof the woods centralUS I love the grill and have learned it. I usually do not use this many coals, which why it cooked faster than expected. Usually 20 minutes after putting them in the pan. I used more coals this time because I was cooking the burger patties first and I wanted it to stay fairly hot.
Thank you for watching.
Really like
HUGE fan of the LSG. OS as well, but you know me! 😄
big Lew. I got one and it is a wonderful grill. Perfect for hambugers and chicken
I need another grill like I need a hole in the hwad. But I love the simplicity of this grill.
i love that gril... and yes...you are a big fancy youtuber!! great video lew!!
Cookin' With James Thanks but I do not have professional electric lighting or a computer. Just a cell phone and old fuel burning lanterns.
BTW sorry I missed your interview last night. I plan to catch it this weekend.

I'm convinced that you, BBQPit Dog, Pickles, and others are conspring to make me fat ! This one was GREAT, Big Lew ! Laissez le bon temps rouler !

Great vid Big Lew
Kinda reminds me of the $13.99 Hibachi Grille we used to purchase. 👍great video, 😁
I like that lodge grill cooker, the brats and hamburger-steak looks delicious- I will have to go check out Carolina Chris.
Thanks for the video man
I PUNCH POLITICIANS Thank you for watching!
BIGGUN!!! you knocked a HOME-RUN video with this post! the LSG was on it AND the 12-inch Lodge cast-iron skillet. i completely agree with you on both items, they are both great. Possibly the two best products made by Lodge in my opinion. I can't even believe you get thumbs down on the LSG Grill. these have to be from people that either have not ever used one, don't have one, think they're overpriced or just didn't know how to properly cook on one. This video gets thumbs up all the way! I could almost smell what you're cooking coming through the phone. anybody that gets practice with the LSG Grill will absolutely love it once they know how to use it. Like you big Lou I've got over a dozen grills and smokers have different styles and my LSG is my absolute favorite for its versatility, heat retention, and like you said you can also use it as a charcoal stove. most definitely one of my favorite grills in my arsenal if not THE favorite. I was already planning on cooking steaks for my family on the LSG tonight, now thanks to you I have to go get some Johnsonville sausages myself, LOL. Have a good day my friend, and again great video!
Johnny-B Racer Thank you so much! When I first began my channel I cooked on this grill often. Then I started getting thumbs down and negative comments on them. I found out it was because I have one of the top rated reviews of this grill on Amazon at the time, I think it was second most popular then now it is like the third or fourth most popular. A few folks that bought based on Amazon reviews like mine found out I was the Same Big Lew that posted the Amazon review. Then I started getting negative comments and thumbs down, my channel was new at the time and I only had a couple of hundred subs or so. So I stopped cooking on it in videos. This is only the 2nd time I’ve done so in 2018. But I have gained a lot more subs since then, my channel is stronger and better established so I will be cooking on it more frequently. Thank you.
Some people just need to get a life and stop stirring the pot Big Lew! Most of us...99% agree with you. Keep on crankin the videos. Maybe to really make them mad you can make some Cajun Spam on that grill...LOL!!
#1 baby yeah
shortyque55 Congratulations and Thank you! 🎉🍾
I would go for the brats and the hamburger steak Big Lew!! Nice video about the cast iron cooking.
Timothy Dotson Thanks Tim. Today my wife and I are facing our fears. I don’t like mango and she doesn’t like habanero. Yet I have a certain mango habanero on a pork butt. It resting now just came out of the Barrel House a few minutes ago.
We'll just have to try the Honey Sciracha an alternative, Big Lew!!
Timothy Dotson the mango wasn’t bad. I’m going to love the honey sriracha!
I've always wanted one of them grills👍
The chorizo is the best if you can find them out here
Great video lew! I think the lodge sportsman is a awesome grill!
I love that Lodge Grill, I love mine when I go camping or just simple in the backyard when I don't have a whole lot to cook. I was glad to see you put them onions and some of that juice on them Burgers because I was thinking the whole video he's just got to put the onions and juice on them burgers glad to see you did LOL. Another good video I've never tried my 12-inch cast iron skillet on my grill like that I'm going to have to give that a try next time thanks for the tip
Definitely try your 12 inch cast-iron skillet on your LSG, i cook with this setup frequently, and always with great results. Also one other thing you'll want to try, if you have a Lodge griddle the bigger one of the two they sell, it fits on the LSG Grill just like it was made to, and I think it actually was. It's a great surface area for cooking griddle style, or teppan-table style for Japanese style steaks, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and fried-rice
Another excellent video. But I'm going to have to start questioning your times after you're going to rotate the handle the 3 which was actually 9. Keep up the good work.
Brandon Larson I mentioned I was going counter-clockwise.
@@BigLewBBQ I know Big Lew just had to give you a hard time.
Everything looks delicious Big Lew! I don't get the grill controversy. Great video!
BBQ PIT DOG BBQ PIT DOG I don’t know, I don’t go to channeled that use gas grills air griddle tops and complain.
My other LSG vids are my most dislike videos. Folks who say that this is a terrible grill because doesn’t have a lid, or it’s heavy, or it takes too long to cool. Folks who say I should get a Go-Anywhere instead.
This is only the second video I’ve made with this grill in 2018. However, I cook on it quite often.
I think my channel has grown enough now with enough viewers and subs that the negatives I get from LSG haters wont hurt my channel to bad. I made several videos with it in 2017. But my channel only had a few hundred subs at that time.
Your channel is fine and dandy Rob! Those people probably are just looking for anything to complain about!
BBQ PIT DOG this is the most negative video I have ever made!
BBQ PIT DOG Hey Rob, See my explanation under Johnny -B-Racers comment.
How do you keep your food warm when doing multiple batches? Also how long will a batch of coals last on this grill?
That Carolina Chris dude is a bum!!! Lol! Well, I guess he is a pretty good guy really. He's one of my favorite channels. Ya cooking up some good Wisconsin sausage right there.
Sausages looking good Big Lew...I'm going to takeout the CZcams channel you shouted out.
Ray Mack's Kitchen and Grill Thanks Ray, he doesn’t always cook but when he does it looks good. You’ll enjoy his channel. Thanks for the “Love”.
Hey bro you know there will always be haters. You keep doing what you want to do. Looks great to me.
I for one love that grill. Just saying :)
Old grills are the best ( Roll Tide)
Shawn Posey Thanks
(Geaux Tigers)
sorry Big-L, but I've GOT to go with the ROLL-TIDE here!!!
Johnny-B Racer Johnny I am answering this and the other comment of yours from the LSU Union eating big Panda Express Asian food watching Georgia crush Missouri on the screen and waiting to go in to Tiger Stadium in couple hours. Geaux Tigers!
Love ya and I forgive you for being a Bama fan.
Big Lew BBQ just finished watching Bama beat Texas A&M eating smoked chicken quarters smothered in Alabama white sauce Go Big AL
