How to Cook Burgers on the Lodge Sportsman's Grill

- Cooking burgers over fire can be tricky. Weather you use a charcoal or gas grill the dangers of flare ups abound when cooking grease dripping burger patties. This danger is even more perilous on a small open top grill like an hibachi style grill. Unlike some Hibachi style grills, the Lodge Sportsman's Grill does not have handles to quickly remove the burgers en event of a flare up. It is a good idea to have a plate or platter at the ready to put the burgers on for few minutes while flames die down. Cooking thick burger patties can be even trickier.
I've been cooking burgers on the LSG for several years, and I've learned a thing or two about doing it successfully. I share what I've learned in this video.
In the Taste Test scene at the end, I sample the thickest of the eight burgers. It was medium well, just the way I like it. The other seven burgers were well done the way my family likes them.

So, it was hot day during the peak of the pandemic, but I was determined to throw a barbecue at the park. I invited as many people as I could, but lots of them simply didn't want to go. Perhaps it was health concerns, perhaps it was a rather expensive bridge toll.
Regardless, the Sportsman Grill was getting lugged to the park. Once there, the park smelled awful, like something had died or a sewer exploded. I'm not sure if it was something from the sea or the acres of goose poop baking in the sun. And despite the stench, the park was packed. There was no good place to sit. After dragging around the Sportman Grill (and lots of other barbecue stuff) to several different locations, we finally settled on a mediocre spot.
So, I'm hot, sweaty, tired, and angry, but I I fired up the grill, remembering what was learned from this video - AND IT WAS THE BEST BURGER I EVER HAD!
Thank you what a great story!
I never turn down a bbq screw the pandemic
This dude is old school reminds me of my uncle, doesn’t give a shit if you like that he stuck his pocket knife in the burger. You eat or you don’t lol.
Yea , sounds alot like myself . Like i really wouldent give a hoot either . The only thing thats missing is the beer and my ole lady .
P.s. The dog can cook too ....
@@danielsmith8560 I NEED 2 DRINK BEER W/ YOUR DOG AS HE TAKES KARE OF THE GRILL MY FRIEND 🙋🏿♂️🙋🏿♂️🙋🏿♂️🙋🏿♂️
Since it’s just me and my wife now we use the Sportman for cooking our steaks mostly. One thing that helps rust issues is to take the grill rack off of the coals as soon as your food is done. If you leave the grate on til the coals die out the grate will always have serious rust issues because it burns all the seasoning off every time you use it.
I have a Sportsman grill. It’s so nice for a small cook of burgers, a couple steaks, or a few pork chops. I’m not firing up the big grill for two burgers for my wife and me. Great grill!!!
Just letting you know I comissioned my new sportsman grill with your video as instructions.
Chops turned out great!!
Thanks from north of the 49th!!
Thanks for an informative video on the Lodge grill. I work with Lodge cast iron skillet at a restaurant and Never knew they were producers of grills. Please continue making these quality vids as I believe more people out there don't know either but with your help could become more educated grill people! Thanks again!
hey what I do is- take a large cookie sheet, turn it upside down and use it for a lid over my burgers and chicken.. The lid helps get it cook to be done and slows down the flareups. a spray bottle with water if it flares just a squrt on the flare
Good idea.
Great lookin burgers!!!! Fully agree with the pocket knife test. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for your posting this. It looks great, now I'm hungry. I have been thinking about buying one of these grills.
Excellent Video. 👍👍
Hey your cooking etiquette is perfect in my opinion for backyard cooking at home, different if out cooking for the public. I appreciate seeing this video as I just received a lodge sportsman grill this past spring and had issues you spoke of when grilling burgers. Everything else cooked up awesome. I have learned from you Lew. 🙏🏻’s continue for you and yours
Growing up in the early 60's, seems like every BBQ grill was adjustable. they all had a hand-crank in front to raise or lower the grill.
Today, they are gone. Another thing the bean counters "improved". I purchased a hibachi with 4-5 levels of adjustability. I'm happy. It works for me as I am single. If I were married with 5 kids, I'd be stuck. Would have to buy a gas grill where you can raise and lower the flame.
P.S. Over the weekend, saw the movie "The Notorious Landlady" (Kim Hunter and Jack Lemmon, 1962). Kim wanted to make some "American" food so she bought a basic BBQ to cook steaks. Right there in the front was, you guessed it, a handle to raise and lower the grill! They don't make 'em like they used to...
I just got this grill for my birthday. Searched and was glad to see yours on top! Thanks for the tips.
The Sportsman's Grill is efficient. Use half the coals, lined on one side. Move the burgers to the opposite side when you flip them.
Hey big Lew, The one you pocket knifed, I call that one "A Sampler" LOL! I like to taste test while I'm cooking!
Thanks for sharing!
This was an awesome video. Thanks for posting! You definitely convinced me to get one of these sportsman grill. I love cast iron. So I'll need this.
It's a good grill, heavy and tough to clean, but makes great burgers and it's quite durable if properly maintained.
I just bought the very same grill last week......I also have a cast iron flat top to use for other purposes. So far , so good...If someone buys one of these grills, chances are they will never buy another one! Thanks for the video!
I have had my sportsman grill for 8 years now! It is perfect for cooking for 2 or 3 people! I like using a cast iron skillet for a lid, and sometimes I will put my griddle on top to do breakfast! This little grill is great for camping too.
gjacobson76 Yes it is great for camping. I have sn oval fish fryer that I use for a lid.
Oh man Big Lew, that recipe sounds great and those burgers look great! You remind me of my family the way you talk.
Good video-thanks! Supposedly the first “Alabama white sauce” was used on chicken and pork. It was made with real mayo, vinegar, and plenty of lemon pepper. I thought is sounded kinda cheap/bad until I dated a very hot southern (born and bred) beauty, who grilled half chickens using it generously. IT’S INCREDIBLE!!! Simple and addicting- like beer!
Wow that's a beautiful burger. I love the simple ingredients and no fus style.
Here's a helpful tip for everyone. When blood comes to the top, flip them until you get no blood on top. Then they're done. I never mash mine. Best video I've seen so far. I rate you over Gordon Ramsey and Emeril. Whatever you do never dimple the burger. Ever. I use 73% ground beef for burgers. 3/4lb makes a half lb done. Burned beef fat flavor. Make the patties 3/4 inch thick. They draw up bun sized. I'm a veteran burger cooker. Never mash them. If I had the ability to make a video I would. Instead of the fingering, make them flatter, flip em'. They draw up and retain the juicyness. All in all this is the best tutorial yet. I suggest fattier meat. Good day my friends 😘
hey biggun, i must say i love ALL of your recipes I've tried, but this video of good ol grilled hamburgers on the Lodge-Grill is just hard to beat
Thank you. Entertaining, educational, the whole package ... keep on grillin'
Thanks for the vid Big Lew. I use my Opinel Carbone pocket knife all the time grillin and cookin in the galley. GIMME THAT SAUCE, UHMM!
Thanks Lew! Reminded Me of the grilled burgers my Dad would make for us growing up. Good memories! Our grill was Solid Cast Iron and weighed a Ton!
I could smell your burgers as they were cooking! A little flare up is good flavor in my book. You Rock!!! \m/ \m/
Heavy Metal Bar-B-Que Thanks for watching. Of course they flare up a little and provide some flavor. There's a flare up in the thumb nail pick. Too many though is too bad.
Heavy Metal Bar-B-Que Good memories
That's a great grill. Those burger are legit. Cheers brother!!
elrabbitsbbq Hola Conejo, it is a good grill for a brazier / Hibachi style grill. Works pretty well as charcoal powered stove too. ¡Gracias amigo!
Thanks! I learned a little something from that video, so now my first Hibachi cookout won't become my first Hibachi disaster. ;)

This is the best instructional CZcams channel for the Lodge Sportsman Grill.
I plan on getting one for camping.
And the burgers look Mahhhhvalous.😋
Eugene Motes Thank you very much!
Very cool, I did not know about the LSG. Great tutorial, and those burgers look burger-licious!! Thanks Big Lew!
Thanks Matt the grills have been around since circa WWII.
I love that grill. Some great tips. Thanks for sharing😃
Christy's Cooking Channel Thanks for watching! They great grills, but like any cast iron they do require maintenance.
Awesome looking burgers I remember my dad had a Sportsman grill we would have fish frys and those fish were awesome cooked on that grill had that smoky taste.
expertnmbbusinesses I do use it to fry fish! Perhaps an up coming video? But it does a fine job at grilling fish as well.

Big Lew, I have the exact same older version Sportsman’s Grill bought in 2005. Love it! Thanks for the tips because I think I have been loading with too much charcoal.
That grill cooks awesome! Just found your channel...good stuff buddy!👍🏼
I can smell the beef and feel the smoke hugging my face. Goddamn, I'm hungry. Good job!
I just bought a sportsman grill just like yours from a friend for $40.00 and a eagerly waiting to try it out.
Those look great! A little mayo, cracked black pepper and a beefsteak tomato. Boom! Heavenly
My neighbor grows (and gives me) beefsteak tomatoes. They are hands down the BEST tomato I’ve ever tasted!!!
I like that grill. Burgers look awesome!! Thanks Lew!!
Kaye's Favorite Things Thanks Kaye, it is a great brazier style grill.
I bought a Lodge Sportsman cast iron hibachi grill years ago for a roadtrip with my family out to the west coast and back. Liked it so much, it was my main go to grill after a couple of gas grills. It's small but with three folks, that was enough. I also made sure I used it far from the house and let it burn out over night. Had to buy another grill top as it gets rusty.
After watching many youtube videos and not going anywhere but work with the Covid 19, and getting a good deal, I stepped up and bought a Weber Summit Charcoal Grilling Center 24". The Lodge grill has its place and is portable, but the Weber; WOW!
luvyesmusic I I didn’t know that they sold parts individually for it. I just checked and they do. Time for me to order a new grill grate for it.
@@BigLewBBQ Something like $30 for the grate. I did some looking around, a lot of looking around and contacted Lodge.
I still have it, might be good to use with the chimney to light more coals for the big grill and the occasional road trip. Don't miss bending over to use it. The old grate you could use to cover the grill when done cooking and let it burn out. The Sportsman is the perfect travel grill, you just have to watch windy conditions as you know. That is the good thing now about having a grill with a lid now, and you can cut off all the oxygen.
hey just build a good fire in the grill put rusty back on, get it hot and wire brush it. you might turn the grill great upside down to heat it
Just seeing this. Iagree with everything you said. Yes, it is the perfect way to use the chimney as you also said.
I picked mine up from Cabela's last week. Its seen about 4 ribeyes and a heap of cabobs. I fricken love it! Its size makes a bag of charcoal go a long way.
@Big Lew BBQ I just purchased my Lodge Grill yesterday. I look forward to looking your videos and getting tips on how to grill with my new edition! Baseball season is right around the corner!!!
Silverback AZ it is a great grill. It is portable but heavy. The biggest drawback to it being used for tailgating/picnicking is the time it takes to cool down. Bring a small fire place shovel with you and shovel out the coals when you are done and snuff them out in an old number 10 can our something similar then it will cool faster and yo can watch the baseball games. Thanks for watching. I’m planning a fun video with it this weekend.
Big Lew! I used my grill on Saturday and it really is a great item. Thanks for the tips you suggested, they I went and picked up the small shovel and the tin can paint bucket. Didnt really need the bucket on saturday but Im sure I will in the future. the shovel, however, came in handy. thanks again brother.
Cool little grill. Burgers look delicious.
Awesome thanks for sharing
Those looked juicy and awesome Big Lew!! Another great show sir!
Everyday BBQ Thanks I appreciate that.
Great cook great video
Macon Gerigia here....With all the Covid-19 ;We live on a local lake and are grillin all the time; have the huge Weber and a Big Ass Smoker . Grill all the time; however with my staple of charcoal in reserve just for grillin all the time, seems with just us two we can use less. I ordered a hibachi grill for my wife and i just watching your vids. Its just us but its 1/4 of the coals.... amazing what you can do for just two on a small grill.... THANK YOU !!!!! Please stay safe and well.... John...
LOL! ...."gimme that sauce!!!", we think alike Big Lew! love this vid, first one of your's I've ever seen, and just subscribed
Johnny-B Racer Thanks for your subscription. I’m just a fella having fun cooking in my back yard. I have a Lodge Sportsman’s Grill playlist with most of my LSG cooks listed in it. Enjoy!
Hey Lew great little grill! That Bama white sauce looks like it's jammin! Great video!
Rich's River Smokers West Virginia Thanks man! It's a great grill
Nice vid Big Lew ..I love my grill as well
FULLHOUSEBBQ Thank you! It is one that I never want to be with out.
Great advise Lew, thank you!! Burgers made me hungry man!
Go Outside And Cook Thank Orrie, your opinion is always appreciated.
Thinking about using a high heat spray paint on the shell of my sportsman grill. Of course not the grill grate itself. Any thoughts??
That's a cool lil grill. U ever put a few chunks of wood to give em a lil bit o smoke or would that make it too hot
I just picked up this grill today from Walmart. It had a clearance price of $24.00. I'm excited to learn to use it! I've never cooked on charcoal before.
Jay-Birder oh my what a wonderful price! I’ll have to check my local Walmart for clearance items. I don’t need a new one yet. But one day I probably will. Thanks for watching. The LSG is awesome.
@@BigLewBBQ Agreed! I was shocked to see it on clearance! I put it together today and did a little pre seasoning of the cook grate with shortening. This weekend I'm hoping to cook my first meal over charcoal!
Jay-Birder I checked my local Wal-Mart last night. Still 88 bucks.
@@BigLewBBQ That's a bummer. I only saw the one on the clearance rack. I'm gonna go back Thursday night again and I'll look around for another one. I found this one back by sporting goods on a clearance end rack.
Awesome info, thanks
Good to see you make a video, Big Lew! Great tip on not mashing the burgers. Another reason why I don't like mashing on the burgers is because they dry out from doing so. But you sure didn't have dry burgers, Big lew. Nicely done as always! :-)
cookingwithtomtom Thai emperor on the taste test was medium well, but the others were well done. None were dry. Thanks for watching Tom.
I squash mine before cooking, you don't squeeze out the juices that way!
Great tips!👍
I picked up a sportsman grill this morning for $8.00 bail handle with ridges it was orange. Cleaned the grill top and used it, put it inside my weber on the coal grid. Seemed to reduce the flare ups. Tomorrow I'm doing the electrolysis on it. Love it already.
Nice video! I picked one up that I grabbed out of some scrap metal recently, for some reason someone was throwing it away! Have you used lump charcoal in it? I've got some leftover but haven't tried it yet, was a little afraid it'd be to hot.
Can you do a cleaning & seasoning vid ?
I like that Lodge and the burgers looked great. had to be good. Nice job. Now pass me a burger.
PHIL IN FLORENCE Sorry dude all gone. Thanks for watching Phill.
These burgers look SOO good!
Now I'm hungry Big Lew! Thanks big guy

Love the pocket knife test!
Awesome video. Cheers
Those burgers look good!
I don't know if they still do, but Amazon used to sell a fitted cover for the original Sportsman Grill. I bought one several years ago and it's helpful
I have one now. This is a really old video.
I use a Cabela oval dutch oven as a lid for my Sportsman grill when making burgers... keeps the flames down and increases smoke flavor. Fits perfectly as though it was made for it.
Nclght Those oval DO’s are nice. I plan to get one soon.
@@BigLewBBQ yeah, I'm sort of a cast iron fanatic and convinced myself to buy it after watching the dutch oven rib video on the cooking outdoors channel. Of course i get the usual buyer's remorse, not because it doesn't perform well, but because I questioned how many times i would actually use it as i still prefer smoking my ribs. But after using it as a lid for my Sportsman, it is now a multipurpose item and I am extremely happy i bought it.
Grilled sliders. Well done video!
What a cool little grill :)
Grewt tutorial also :)

Big Lew BBQ Thats great. Good review there too :) With some neat tips!
Looks nice! If you want to try something new poke a hole in the middle of the burger patty before cooking. It will prevent it from puffing up and you and get a window to see how done it is.
Have a great day!
I'll take that split burger any day..... this was a bomb ass video.. I just bought the grill today and this was a very helpful video..
Thank you very much. You will enjoy the grill.
In the spring, when my sportsman is kinda nasty, I get some cheap burgers (greasier the better) and I deliberately catch everything on fire. And the super greasy burgers won't even burn. But do wear glasses and gloves. There will be a LOT of flame.
Good looking burgers!
Everybody loves burgers! And man did those look good! I love that little Lodge grill, it's going on my Amazon wish list like right now! And the pocket knife usage is great too. I actually just used my small hunting knife when I was at camp the other week to make a burger for lunch. It was my spatula, my doneness tester, and my mayo & mustard spreader. The best part is I had just used it the day before to skin and quarter a deer! The food police would take my youtube channel away from me if they saw that, haha!!! Great video Big Lew, thanks for sharing
Baker BBQ Thanks, I feel naked with out a pocket knife with me.
I use the 85/15 ground beef and I don't have any flair up problems, try it sometime.
That does make a big difference, although 85/15 will dry out much easier if not cooked just right and lack the flavor of 80/20.
Would you mind sharing your Alabama white bbq sauce recipe. Sounds good.
I do salmon and tuna steaks! I put a single layer of coal and the grill on high setting. A piece of apple wood on the up wind side so a light smoke blows over the fish 3 mins a side salmon and 4mins a side tuna steak. Clean and oil the grate before putting the fish on I have my door in and air gate open. Fish is done perfectly . Best grill I have ever had, love it!
jeff camp I love to do tuna steaks on this. Small salmon filets too, larger whiole salmon filets I’ve not tried on this grill yet.. I most often cook catfish on it. In my most recent video I cooked Johnsonville sausages on the LSG
Thank you for watching and the kind comment.
Those are some great looking burgers. One thing about cast iron cooking , everyone has their own style of doing it. I have one and it is older then dirt. It's at lease 45 years old and might even be older then that , memory fails me on the exact years. Seams like i have had it all my life and I'm 75. lol.
Mine came with a separate unit ( can call it a pot ) that sits on the top of the grill and can be used to make stews or soups in it. It's the same size ( shape , length and width ) as the grill and about 2 inches high. It has made some really good clam stew over at the beach with everything fresh from the ocean. Plus burgers and steaks on the grilling part.
All I have ever used in the grill is Oak or dried Citrus ( Orange ) wood. It does not take a lot.
Chuck Littleton Thank you I think you are referring to the deep oval fish fryer. I have the shallow one. There is a a deep oval one made in China that is available to fit it and I would like to acquire one. It is sold under the brand names, Bayou Classic, Cajun Classic and Cabbalas.
I agree good looking burgers. I've had my mine over 15 years. I love it wish it had the pot that your came with. Good video Lew
They don't make em like they used to chuck! Same with tools etc!
thanks you could a turkey roasting pan make to size or not and flip it upside down to put flair ups fire out or down. great video thanks
What is the grill sat on? As it’s too low to have on the floor
I like that grill! Your burgers looked really good 😊 my husband uses his pocket knife for everything. It didn't bother me.
Cooking with Cricket (cricket516) It's a wonderful little grill. Thanks for watching. If I have pants on, I have a pocket knife with me. Your husband seems like a fine man.
Hell that one with a little pink was done... well hell I woulda ate it lol
Adrian Culbreath Thanks
Now I want to get me that grill!
So I was debating should I get this grill or go for the Weber Smokey joe? I really love cast iron for the family heirloom aspect but the actual functionality ? Does it give off that summer charcoal grilling flavor ? Or is it different ? And if we did want grill marks in this would we have to have it super hot ? Or the design doesn’t allow grill marks Hmm? Thanks !
Puertoropelu225 it can give grill marks, the slats are wide but the gaps are narrow. I have both the WSJ and this LSG. If price or budget is an issue get the WSJ. It is easier to maintain, lighter weight, has a lid, easier to transport. That being said I would rather cook thin (1/2” )steaks and fish on the Lodge.
Umm price isn’t really the problem just comparing and pros and cons, I know the lodge will last me longer but Weber is less work and less mess (seasoning, etc) but I do want to have something to have for years to come Idk if the Weber would last that long. But thanks brother I appreciate it definitely helps with my decision!
Awesome Video Buddy! Nice Cook Too.

Hello from the UK. please I have a question..after many years using an iron charcoal bbq it has finally cracked and given up the ghost.. really impressed by this US product but I see you somehow pre light the coals and pour them into the grill? Never done this before..can I still use it directly by igniting the coals in the actual grill..here..not sure about in America.. you can buy bags that can burn well.. Thank You..
Gareth Cumming Yes of course you can. Light the coals anyway you want.
