    The first tractor I was around was a Johnny pop. A family friend had one on his farm and I can still remember the sound when he was headed out to the field.

    When I was a kid I plowed with the 830 John Deere tractor. Your ears would be popping at the end of the day from the engine.

      I remember going to bed after driving a John Deere 730 and falling asleep to listening to my ears ringing. I must have been 12 years old. Never had my ears ring in my life before that.

    I've always liked the 830. I have no personal experience with these 2 cylinder JD's. What are the disadvantages of this design vs a more conventional engine layout?

    • @CoalChrome
      @CoalChrome Před 6 lety +6

      Robert Williams other than being shaken around a lot, and the somewhat often maintenance of the pony, they are fine. At our fairgrounds, there’s a 80 modified with a starter

    In the late 60's I spent a couple of summers on an 820 for a relative of mine. What is the difference between the 820 and the 830
    as far as the model numbers are concerned. Can't be much.

    • @thegreenerthemeaner
      @thegreenerthemeaner Před 2 lety +1

      Depends on the year. The early 820s had a green dash and were little improved over the 80. The later ones had a black dash and more power, the same as the 830.

    • @Eddie_Schantz
      @Eddie_Schantz Před 2 lety +1

      @@thegreenerthemeaner Thanks for the info. I would have thought that a 6 bottom plow would be too much for an 830. I guess it would depend on the type
      of soil you are in. We pulled a 5 bottom with the 820 and it did a good job with that.
