Welcome to "Collie And The Gardener" Growing a garden around your coop serves several purposes that are all necessary and beautiful. Whether you are designing your coop or think of ways to add to it as the years go by, consider a garden around the perimeter. We block out sun and provide shade on our western side with sunflowers. Their height and ability to grow densely is amazing, but they also provide a perfect food source as the flowers fade into seed. On our north and east areas we grow herbs that smell amazing and provide supplement food to the chickens. Think mints, lemon verbena, oregano, thyme, beebalm, all amazing herbs that reduce fly presence, and can be dried or added fresh to the laying box and coop. Finally on my south end we have pumpkins and tomatoes growing. The chickens provide the natural fertilizer that gets these plants pumped and growing like nowhere else in my garden.
All of these plants are quick and easy to grow, many are perennials that return each year like the herbs or self seed like the sunflowers. I will leave you the links to our other videos in the series of our coop design, or check out our playlist for more ideas.

Thank you for sharing! I usually add things to the chicken yard that my flock eats. I am looking forward to adding more plants again soon.

I had a crazy idea of growing dwarf baby banana inside the run, I'm building a pergola style run, the baby banana plant will add some shade 😂

Dwarf banana plants sound awesome! Unfortunately, we are not in a compatible growing zone for those tropical beauties. My one bit of advice is some banana plants can become invasive, and spread very quickly. My quick research shows banana leaves are edible for chickens. I am sure you knew that already. So a fast growing food source that provides shade is a perfect combination for hungry hens. Cheers, Britt
