    This is going to be the first dress I will ever sew from scratch. I come from a long line of African seamstresses. I will conquer this dress this quarantine!

      Bah hahahahaha!! You’re hilarious. This dress is so beautiful and I was think just like you. I’m going to make this dress, heck yeah! Then I watched the part where she was sewing the cups into the bodice and then the lining in that area with 100 layers of fabric, and I was like. 😳 “Sorcery!” Lol! We can do it though....after a lot of practice!! 🤣 I hope!

      Good luck ladies! I would start with something simpler personally, which is what I've done, it helps a lot. It is possible, though, for sure! I'm lucky and very grateful to have some sewing hobbyist pros in my family though, so I've been learning so much from them! At least quarantine is giving us some time to learn new skills like this!

    I was watching other sewing channels and so many sew OVER THE PINS! aaaah, makes me cringe every time. and they don't iron the fabric before cutting out the pattern. I don't know how they think they are going to get a good result. I am so happy to finally find a channel that follows proper techniques. some people just don't know how important these little details are to get a professional looking garment. thank you Thank You THANK YOU

      I pin horizontal to the seam allowance but I always remove my pins as I go lol. I was told to pin like gertie does for years and I try but my brain keeps going noooo xD also I received a gravity fed iron for Christmas and my seams are so beautiful I could cry

    I have had this pattern since shortly after my sewing journey began! It has taken me until May 2023 to get the skills and confidence to give it a try. What better way to make this dress than under the watchful eye of Gertie herself! I will be making this at one of her (eagerly awaited) new sewing retreats! Beyond excited. Can hardly contain myself.🪡

  • @MotherHemCreations
    @MotherHemCreations Před 3 lety +15

    These helped me so much! And I just want to say that I love that you push for good techniques in such an easy way. It's not high and mighty or I know better than you at all. And so many people don't preach the importance of basting and pressing. I'm working on my first liz dress for my birthday (six days left to get it finished!) And I'm just so excited by how pretty its coming along! You , black snail patterns and truly Victorian are my favorite pattern companies to throw money at

    I love that Gerdie gives the clearest instructions. She doesn't take for granted that we know how far the base stitch should be, she tells us Machine length numbers. She tells us what should be 5/8 and what should be 1/2. This is so important for us new sewers!! If I get these types of instructions from Charmed Patterns, then those patterns are for me. It's funny how cats like to be in the middle of what we are focused on. My kitty does the same to me as well. Just wanted to mention that your camera angles are really on point and it makes all the difference in the world. Your hands don't block a move you making which is why I learn so much from you as a new sewer. Thank you so much for your lessons, I love it and always watching these videos.

    I know about pleat matching😱 I struggled hard with my brother’s pleated under tunic for his Kylo Ren costume! They have a habit of not wanting to match up 😭 the struggle was real but I’m so happy with the end result. It was just an upgrade of a pretty decent costume but of course they used a textured fabric instead of pleats so that got cut off (including the turtle neck that was meant to be a necked gorget), had to replace the zip for a sturdier one and make a separate under tunic. A guy at the conversation with the original costume said that my brother’s was a better quality 💖 the overtunic was the same but we redid the neck gorget! (My brother, who has never done patterns less alone pattern drafting, was able to design the pieces for the gorget based on the support layer I had to sew the faux black leather on. Lol he’s tall, and forgot his contacts so he had a concentration frown on his face but I was following a little bit back and enjoying all the staring, recognition and compliments his cosplay generated. Someone dared to talk to him and made his day~! 🌟
    It’s amazing how someone complimenting something you manually worked (on with love, sweat, tears and sometimes even blood) is.

    This is great bc I have a butteric dress very similar and not sure how to go about it

      Yes I did a Butterick pattern with a shelf bust too! This one is different-the shelf goes all the way under the bust rather than mid bust. And this one offers A-H cup sizes!
