- In Part 1 of sewing a 1950s shelf bust dress, we are making a toile. Thought I’d try something different with Spring & St Patrick’s Day around the corner. We are using vintage sewing pattern Simplicity 4704. This pattern has been re-issued in a modern reproduction version as Simplicity 1155. Enjoy!

Love love your videos. ❤ Always gets me working on my unfinished projects! If you’re planning on pinking, I wouldn’t bother putting in the extra work of overcasting, and if pinking doesn’t stop the fraying I’d just go with French seams. (That’s just my preference.) A nicer feel for an unlined light weight garment and the added bulk is nearly the same. If you are getting puckering or twisted French seams try only sewing in one direction both times ie. top to bottom or bottom to top. Took me years to figure that out!

Also for what to do with your toile. If I altered the pattern, I will use the altered toile as my pattern pieces and store them with the pattern. For large unaltered pieces I will reuse it for linings or facings or other crafts and projects.

Watching your videos inspired me to reorganize my patterns properly. Which made me realise how much money i have invested in them over the years....its embarrassing to admit how many i have...!!! But the wide range ensures that i can make anything for anyone.
I really felt that fabric scorching moment. I've done it too many times, so now i ALWAYS use a pressing cloth. Somehow i end up doing the same thing: accidentally turning the heat up too much!! (Then there was the time i absolutely RUINED $60 worth of the most beautiful nubby silk ...by washing it)
Re: overcasting seam allowance edges...depending on whether or not you are instructed to press the seams open or in one direction together, then you can overcast the edges as one, or separately. If the directions dont say, then use the thickness of the fabric as a guide to decide whether or not they should be overcast separately or together. This fabric here cery fine and thin, and so overcastong the edges together will actually strengthen the seam. If I'm making something out of a heavier weight fabric, I'll serge (overcast) the seams separately to reduce bulk.
You always have such wonderful advice and make me feel not so alone on this journey. From now on, I’ll keep in mind to check the weight of the fabric when deciding what seams to go with. Thank you so much for sharing! 🥰❤️

It’s just glorious when the notches match up!! If this is the fabric you’re using for the toile I can’t wait to see what you use for the final project. My husband got me a serger for Christmas and I am loving it! Especially on fabrics like that that fray easily

A little note 💕 What do you do with your toiles when you’re done practicing on them? I’ve heard some recycle them or turn them into quilts.

When I make toiles I usually keep them in my closet so I know what my pattern looks like. I usually use muslin fabric not pretty fabric like the one you used. But I’m going to start. I plan on wearing my toiles so I have more clothes.❤

Actual work on the wardrobe is a little while in the future. We're still working on the declutter and downsizing - at the moment we're in 'everything is everywhere' stage, lol & sigh. Right now I am literally waiting for my bobbin lace pillow to arrive (fingers crossed, system says it's out for deliver). I bought a travel lace pillow from the UK. I may have temporarily lost all of my cutting spaces but at least I can tinker at making my own trim...@@CindyLeaux

Thank you! Simplicity did a modern re-issue of it as “Simplicity 1155.” If you’re looking for the original (4704) it may pop up on Etsy, Ebay etc. I hope you find it!
I believe the reissue actually isn't exactly this pattern (I came across a blog post mystified by it when searching for info on the pattern myself, a while ago) - but I also seem to recall someone on Etsy did do a PDF repro.
And Lekala has a very similar dress pattern, though without the sleeves and with a less full skirt (and some reviews did not seem very impressed with the fit).

Ooh yeah! So I probably should have specified about the overcasting: I overcast the edges of each cut pattern piece before I sew the pieces together and treat them as if they've been serged. Your machine should have come with an overcast foot that helps align the edge of the fabric with the needle. BUT, in your case, since you're working with a silky material that's on the thin side, pinking your seams or even doing french seams will be the best way to treat your seams because it's less bulk. I recommend overcasting your edges more on cottons because they can handle the heft OR brocades, because they fray like crazy.
As for my toiles: I don't like to waste my time or my fabric, so I make wearable muslins, and they either become house dresses (or if they're particularly successful) or day dresses!
Ohhhhhhh 😅 I think I get it now. I will have to find the overcast foot and give it a try. Do you still stay stitch as well even if you overcast? I really appreciate your tips! 🥹
@@CindyLeauxI still stay stitch, mainly out of habit, but also, say when you're grading the seams along the neckline and the facing, you'll be cutting off your finished edges.
If you really like the rotary cutters you can get a smaller diameter like 10, 15 or 20 mm that should make the tighter curves doable.

Rotary cutter vs scissors: i mostly use a rotary cutter, because it's better for me and my style of cutting out. I love the sound of scissors cutting through fabric though so if i can use scissors, i will. Just for the sound. Beautiful dress can't wait to see the next version!
Ahhh yes, the sound of scissors cutting fabric is so comforting. Especially when the fabric doubled, or you’re working with a nice crispy cotton. 🥰 And thank you! I can’t wait to share the final with you! ❤️

I have a vintage dress pattern for a little girl, and I finally figured out how to do the bodice with the lining. I did up an "extra" bodice, put it in a ziplock bag and attached it to my pattern so I could use it for reference the next time I used the pattern. I also took pictures! Good work on sticking with figuring out the hard parts!
5:04 to 5:15 We all make ironing mistakes at one time or another in our lives. Tip: A press cloth would come in handy for future fragile fabrics. See you in your next video 📹 😊.

I’m a quilter so I always use a rotary cutter. You seem more comfortable using scissors, and I love the sound of you cutting with them😅😅

I prefer scissors for much the same reason. But I've found out I struggle with pinking shears - I think it's something about the build of my hand and how I apply pressure to scissors most comfortably that does not agree with the three-dimensionality of pinking shears, and my cuts keep being chewed up. I arrived at that conclusion - that it's a combination of me and the tool - after comparing myself and a coworker with the same pair of good quality pinking shears, a while ago... So I got myself a rotary cutter with a pinking blade, and that's much better for me. 🙂

I’ve always wondered while watching these, do you make all the seams finished? :o also for reference when overcasting, make sure the thread is catching the edge of the fabric! It took me way too long to realize that lol. I’d say it’s worth it before you even have a serger

Thank you! It gives a lot of options nylon, shantung, rayon, dotted swiss, cotton, pique, organdy. For the ruffled bust you can even use chiffon. 💕

Hi, thank you so much for watching! Yes, i was practicing different ways to finish seams to prevent them from fraying. There’s a thing called “fray check” that is like a glue that can be used in certain instances for buttons holes, etc. But usually you’ll finish seams by sewing them closed in some fashion. 💕
