I agree with what people are saying. The message of this song as not as clear as their other videos such as September's Children. A new firm opens up, and plans to tear down a ghetto to make room for their new building. They don't see it as being a place where people live ('My God is better than yours.' 'My gun is bigger than yours.' Basically I'm bigger and can do what I want, and there's nothing you can do about that). One of the men, the younger one, experiences the community he'll be destroying on his way home. He refuses the water, thinking that he's above buying from the man. Then, he sees the community. He sees the basketball, the guys popping wheelies, he sees the happiness and life the people are living. At home that night he thinks about what it is that his firm is doing. The next day, at work, he takes a fresh look at the city, through new eyes and a new appreciation for the people who live there.
Not exactly the music video I expected for this song (I totally interpreted the song as being about America and the way we force ourselves onto other countries), but this could easily be a more accurate interpretation of the song and its lyrics.
Great job, Rise Against, and keep up the amazing work!!

      @MegaLadysman1234 Před 8 lety +56

+Andrew Snyder Like most well written music the song can be abstracted so that your original interpretation could also be correct. If we take a second to abstract what you've written: the song is very much about not recognizing other's rights to their life, their homes, their beliefs etc. So what you thought the song was about actually is in a way what the song is about. The music video provides visuals to tell a specific story but the song is crafted to be able to tell many stories.

+Andrew Snyder When the band posted the video, Tim said it was about being tired with of all the pain in the world, "coffins full of Kindergartners, is this what you call free?", so the video is kind of putting it in context, the firm doesn't see the neighborhood they're moving into as it truly is, one man finally does and goes back to tell them "people live here"

    • @elizabethsinger1070
      @elizabethsinger1070 Před 8 lety +3

+Andrew Snyder No. This video is about the middle class and the lower class. And the different lives of both situations. the guy on top of the sky rise is upper class. when the people in the streets in the neighborhood are the middle class and lower class families. And the higher class guy is evil to the lower and middle class families. Everyone needs to think about this video on what it really means.

This video was shot in Baltimore, and is an extremely accurate view of what life is like here. A city divided, your either rich, or poor. Sadly the poor are often times looked over, or treated like they don't matter. So glad they included the 12 O Clock boys at the end of the video. The rich call them thugs, we call them athletes. They are the most amazing dirt bike riders you will ever see, their talents totally overlooked by the rest of the world, given labels as thugs, because of where they live.

I think it's because they view the people and actually support causes of acknowledging in real life over the political issues and social issues they actually sing about. Example is seeing a whole forest cut down. I feel like more modernly people are living in their own world when bad things happen instead taking any stance to share how terrible it really is. People stopped pushing for a better world and started pushing to be fake again and pretending the worst crisis are ignorable and you have to be happy and accept it. I think it'd be a different world and better one if people started dealing with the crisis and acknowledge them. Dirt swept under a rug piles up and doesn't actually go away.

My God is better than yours
And the walls of my house are so thick
    I hear nothing at all
I followed you out in the storm
    But it carried you off
And I burned every picture of yours
    Was that not enough?
My gun is bigger than yours
    So let's arm the masses
And see what the bastards do then
Walking tall once set us apart
Now we're down on all fours
Do you cry my name in the dark
    Like I do yours?
These storms are getting stronger now
    Trusses all bend and sway
Lightning hits, the power goes out in the fray
    As the waves crash high
    And the shoreline disappears
I will scream to the sky
    "Hey, people live here."
My dreams are not unlike yours
    They long for the safety
And break like a glass chandelier
But there's laughter and oh there is love
Just past the edge of our fears
And there's chaos when push comes to shove
But it's music to my ears
May you be in Heaven before the Devil knows you're dead
May these winds be always at your back
'Cause when we're all just ghosts
    And the madness overtakes us
We will look at the ashes
    And say, "People lived here."
From the penthouse to the holy martyr
    Sea to shining sea
From the coffins full of kindergarteners
Is this what you call free?
From the hate that drips from all your crosses
    Are your hands so clean?
    There's a wildfire and it's spreading far
    From sea to shining sea
    When we're all just ghosts
    And the madness overtakes us

There may never be more haunting and stirring lyrics than the adapted Irish Blessing used in this song.
“May you be in heaven before the devil knows you’re dead,
May these winds always be at your back”
Such a sucker-punch, right in the feels. Every single time.

Hey y'all, before reading this I want you guys to hear me out. I'm only ten and I'm spitting facts over here. Im growing up with two autistic brothers, a split up family, and living barley knowing my real family. So maybe instead of saying children are dumb or unwise, maybe just take a look at yourself and think, "is this whole I am? Is this what they are? Am I actually correct?" And maybe, just maybe, you'll become a little wiser.
The song is most likely about all the horrible things about us because we have made ourselves out to be entitled to greatness. We think we are the almighty, the warriors, the fierce ones. I was playing this in my car and just thinking about the lyrics. "My god is better than yours" I can't believe us Christians have come to this.. Remember in grade school when you would have to read about the Muslims and how they forced their Christ upon others and would torture them til they would believe. Remember thinking how horrible they were? WE ARE THE SAME! We think my god is better than yours, my gun is bigger than yours, therefore I have higher authority than you and I am bigger and better than you. When it says the coffins filled with kindergarteners its talking about school shootings. I remember listening to this years ago thinking "why does it say my god is better than yours? I'm ten now and I feel I shouldn't know about all of this. Man this country's impact on the youth. My dad once said "We're spending all this money on some fucking wall but none on education? Some of the schools round here don't even have art class." And as someone who has a general understanding of how bad this country is, this just seems like torture to me. Some schools make you hand in literal cash and if that gets stolen then damn, you might go without eating tonight, or tomorrow night or the next or even the next.

    Lyrics:
My god is better than yours
And the walls of my house
Are so thick I hear nothing at all
I followed you out in the storm
    But it carried you off
And I burned every picture of yours
    Was that not enough?
My gun is bigger than yours
    So let's arm the masses
And see what the bastards do then
Walking tall once set us apart
Now we're down on all fours
Do you cry my name in the dark
    Like I do yours?
These storms are getting stronger now
    Trusses all bend and sway
Lightning hits, the power goes out in the fray
    As the waves crash high
    And the shoreline disappears
I will scream to the sky
    "Hey, people live here!"
My dreams are not unlike yours
    They long for the safety
And break like a glass chandelier
But there's laughter and oh there is love
Just past the edge of our fears
And there's chaos when push comes to shove
But it's music to my ears
May you be in heaven before the devil knows you're dead
May these winds be always at your back
'Cause when we're all just ghosts
    And the madness overtakes us
We will look at the ashes
    And say, "people lived here"
From the penthouse to the holy martyr
    Sea to shining sea
From the coffins full of kindergarteners
Is this what you call free?
From the hate that drips from all your crosses
    Are your hands so clean?
    There's a wildfire and it's spreading far
    From sea to shining sea
    When we're all just ghosts
    And the madness overtakes us
I will scream to the sky
Yeah, I'll scream to the sky
Yeah, I'll scream to the sky
    "Hey, people live here!"

It's been 10 years now, summer of 2014 and this album had just come out, I had just finished my 2nd year of college and looking to get a summer job. I got a call from home hearing that my father had had a stroke and was in the hospital and it was very bad. I had this song on repeat for the whole 4 hour drive on my way home and I was in total shock, did not know how to process or what to feel. When I got by his bedside he was barely conscious and couldn't speak, he just mumbled, but he looked at me and recognized me immediately and was trying to ask me why I was there, as if he wasn't aware of how bad the situation was and that it wasn't important enough for me to be bothered to be there. That was the last time I saw him alive. Now 10 years later I can't picture his face or hear his voice anymore, but if I play this song it all just comes back to me, somehow all my memories of him are tied to this very song and lyrics and I cannot listen to it without tearing up or outright crying. I love this song man, it's my favorite Black Market album song and it's not even close even though there's a lot of amazing songs on there.

My interpretation: he rich men are planning to build something new and the young man is the architect. The new building is going to be build where the other people shown live right now, but the rich people din't think about that when planning. Only the young man visites the place and sees the people. First he refuses the bottle of water but then he accepts the car wash. When he comes home and sits on the couch he thinks about the project again and the other morning he sees the city differently. He now knows that people live there.
I think it fits the song perfectly, it is beautifull and makes me think again how anybody can make a difference.

Radazure, damn that is good. Over the last couple days I have been looking for a good rock-ish band, but still kept my old school punk style. Found a lot of decent bands the last couple days, but they are more hardcore/melodic hardcore-ish than anything. They really lack that raw rock sounds with the punk mix, but growing up in Chicago with the old 88, and then the formation of RA, I guess I got spoiled. The "activist" part of RA is only a slight perk for me. We may share similar ideas, but I find more to their songs than just the activist or political portions. Kinda why I got out of Anti Flag a while back. Focus too much on politics and your life really becomes one sided and spiteful, imho :( . Thanks for the recommendation, I will be looking up more Strike ASAP.
