Mt. Etna is a so called stratovolcano. That means that the magma under the surface is a pretty viscous one. Thus, the magma may be floating so slowly that it gets cooled down and solidifies inside the mountain, blocking the way. When more magma comes up and starts to press against the solidified magma, the preassure starts building up. Also, the preassure may increase even more because of the gasses inside the volcano. This is how most explosive eruptions are caused.

    Tank You!!!

I'm mesmerised by volcanoes. I'm reminded of Maurice & Katia Kraft, who'd spent their professional lives filming and photographing volcanoes; it was their life's work. Then one day their luck ran out, and they were both incinerated by a pyroclastic flow, at Japan's Mt Unzen, if I remember rightly. It's a fatal mistake to under-estimate Mother Nature.

That would of course depend on how close to the volcano you are, and I don't have any idea. I can at least say that in Alaska in 1912, the largest volcano eruption the last 100 years took place. It was heard 466 km (750 miles) away.
