I deployed to the desert twice in the 90s and Hootie & Blowfish were on USO tours there both times. This song is a hat-tip to military families who have to wait at home while their military dad/mom/husband/wife is deployed. It's not an easy thing to do and this song/video showcases those struggles. A fantastic oldie for sure.

24 years ago when this song came out, it spoke directly to me. I loved a girl who had joined the Navy and I was sure that we’d make it thru despite the odds. Spoiler, we didn’t. But because of her, I decided I had to make myself a better man and I did. I never saw her again, but I made sure that if we did meet, she’d say I did alright.
One of the most profound things was when I saw a picture of the mass of phone banks at the Recruit Training Center and I knew that my girl had been talking to me on one of those phones and hearing our voices was the most important thing in the world to us. So then how many other thousands of people had their own similar brief but intense conversations on those same phones.
A year later I came across my own comment and at first didn’t recognize it as my own.
We’re all unique individuals, but we’re all the same.
Each of us is a miracle, but there’s so many of us that it becomes ordinary. We’re all forgettable miracles.
So remember, the other people who have used those same phones to talk to their significant others, that conversation was as significant as your most significant conversation.
You are a good Man, my Dad was a Good Man as well. Navy and FBI.

The closest there is to any form of alternative IMO is New Hollow, but their latest singles have started to sound like any other band, sadly. Their song She ain’t you definitely has that 90’s sound though.

the love of my life and I recently split so he could go get help for his drinking problem and so I could get help for my mental health issues and although he left me to give us both time and space to heal and focus on ourselves and not drag each other down, I will always be here waiting for him and listening to this song as a reminder. ❤

Darius Rucker has amazing NATURAL talent and although he was GREAT as the front man of Hootie, he is even more amazing as a country artist. He is one of the FEW singers out there that have such a bold singing voice NATURALLY. Screw the little whiney boy bands and hooker styled singers, this type of music is where true talent lies. Amazing and worth the money to purchase. I would see him in concert any day of the damn week, he is THAT good.
I love whatever Darius sings, he' s one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. I have seen some "major" artists concerts, the ones that the visual means more than the song itself, but none of them are compared to the Hootie´s concerts I´ve been to, the simpler the best. I miss the days when good music had to do with good lyrics, singer and band and Hootie and the Blowfish had them all, but nowadays people praise singers that scream things we don´t understand, lyrics that have no meaning, concerts as I mentioned before, that looks more like a scifi movie or a circus show with a soundtrack. I do not want to see special effects, fireworks, fire or whatever when I go to a concert to be entertained, I want that when I go to the movies, when I go to a concert I want to see the band playing, hear the instruments and the singer´s real voice...
