Same thing happened with Jimmy Hendrix. The best guitar players in the world were mesmerized by Roy. One of the nicest men I ever had the opportunity to be around and a strong Christian.

My Dad is back there playing bass. He was Roy's bandleader and business manager for 20 years and they remained close friends for life. I can tell you that Roy practiced constantly. For instance, when he and his wife would join us for holiday meals, he'd bring a guitar. He'd go find a chair and just start practicing. He could carry on conversations while practicing. He was that dedicated to making sure his audience got what they were expecting. He never took a day off. It meant the world to him to be his absolute best. Thanks for sharing.

"Bless their hearts!" is a Southern expression. I grew up hearing it from family, and still say it myself today.
typically "bless their heart" is a rather kind way of calling someone slow or stupid.

Probably the most common expression upon encountering an ugly child...
"Bless his heart" or your heart, or their heart has multiple uses. As Roy used it, it was a sincere and gracious. But you can also use it as a way of talking smack about a person, but couch it in a way that doesn't sound too derogatory. "That boy never had the brains God gave a squirrel, bless his heart... " or "She's never been an attractive woman, bless her heart."

I think these young people listening and forming new appreciation for the musicians from the past is fantastic.

I saw him in Las Vegas in 1980. He played a few songs then stopped. He stiod out in the front of the stage. He then pointed to the house band. He asked the audience to give them a big round of applause for making him look fabulous. He introduced each band member by name. Thats classs.
Wow, I love stories like that. Like, who does that? Awesome story. I always like him. He always came across as a very positive and great human being. There is a very small group of people that just have that type and f energy that you can feel.

There are some artists that just truly love to perform, love their fans, and appreciate the artists backing them. And Roy was definitely one of them. So relaxed on stage and with the audience.

@@prayingmantis6777 Chris LaDue also did that, and introduced each back member Individually. And several times, he would just leave the stage and let the band go wild on their own. His band even stuck together for awhile after Chris' death, and his son was singing. That band could take off and play about any type of music, and they all acted like they were enjoying every moment. Chris and his band kept everyone rocking, and there were no special effects, with the exception of a mechanical bull. Just a high charged musical night outside under the stars. They have the best rendition of "Life is a Highway" in my opinion, along with a wonderful selection of other rock, country, cowboy, humorous, and ballad type songs . It was such a wonderful evening that was over much too fast.
A friend of mine once said that Roy Clark could stretch rubber bands across an empty cigar box and make it sound like a Stradivarius. Incredible talent on many instruments.
And your friend was correct. He is one of the top most talented musicians to ever grace a stage. I grew up in a family of musicians and I will never forget the first time I heard Roy Clark, I was 5 and my cousin ( Another one of THE greatest guitar players EVER) sat me down and we watched Roy Clark play this very song and I was done, he was my hero then and still is today. I love Larry Carlton (I can hear people asking Who?) and he is utterly amazing, but Roy has him beat to be sure.
What I heard about Roy Clark is that he was a genuinely kind man, that he believed his talent was a gift from god, and he said he felt connected to god when he played. Maybe that's what his expression was about when he closes his eyes. 🥲☺️ Just filled with joy! Good for him! ❤

Roy was a friend of my Dad's. He would stop by sometimes when he was in the area. He was the absolute best musician I have ever seen. You could always tell when he was getting as fast as he could play. His tongue would stick out. RIP Roy.

You go anywhere below the Mason-Dixon Line and you will hear "Bless Your Heart" all the time. Roy passed away in 2018. He was one of our greatest guitarists. Roy does sing. Check out "Thank God and Greyhound" and "Yesterday, When I Was Young".

Interestingly “well bless your heart “ is fraudulently the response when someone says or does something naïve or just not well thought out. A little bit of sugar helps the medicine go down.
Tone and context is important in determining the meaning.
It’s not unlike the phrase used in New Jersey “forget about it”. The meaning can very depending on the way and tone it is said.

I was at a Roger Maris golf tournament for charity. Roy Clark was the entertainment for the banquet. Great show. Later Roy and his band came to the hospitality room . We drank and played Left Right Center. Roy had not drank for a very long time. He was totally drunk , staggering. The band was holding him up. Some asked, " Roy, play a song". He immediatly woke up, play the song, then went back into his stooper. Amazing musician.

Some time ago I was in a band...I was the country part of the show and we all decided a 12 string would fit very well. I did too until we did a 6 hr New Year's Eve show at the local Eagles. One of the Beatles once said....." I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS"!

that explains the look of pain on his face, his fingers being ripped open by those tiny strings, all that sliding, the 12 string is usually played by strumming.... i guess he has calluses on his fingers, and so quick and nimble, no fret noise, he is good, he is the best

"Bless his/her/your heart" is a southern thing. It can be used as a salutation, as Roy used it, but is most often used at the end of a statement to or about someone as an expression of empathy. For example, somebody might say, "Pete's just lost his job, bless his heart." What southerners also understand is that it can be used kind of disingenuously to mask an insult, and there is a joke down here in the deep south that you can say anything about somebody and it's okay as long as you add "bless his heart" to the end of it. So, the reply to the above statement might be, "Not surprised. Pete's never done a hard day's work in his life, bless his heart." See, that was mean, but it's okay, because they added "bless his heart." 😉

Amazing guitarist and talented performer, and very funny. I saw him perform in Nashville, Branson, Vegas and Reno. Each time the shows were a gift without me asking or choosing; each time I was more appreciative.

When Roy Clark passed away a few years ago, music lost an unprecedented entertainer. I used to be so mesmerized watching him play the guitar, or banjo. I can't imagine how many people he has played to. He was one of the best.
I grew up with Roy Clark He was amazing. I loved all the faces he made while playing! He got in to the music, he felt it, you could tell! God Bless Roy Clark we miss you.
Roy could play anything with strings, guitar , banjo and violin and was a virtuoso on all three. RIP Roy.

Roy Clark was one of my favorite entertainers of all time. We used to watch him and Buck Owens on Hee Haw every week.
Another great country music entertainer you may appreciate is Junior Brown. While not quite as outrageous as Clark he also has his own unique style of entertainment.
Roy Clark and Buck Owens were monsters on strings I could listen to them all day long, and Hee Haw was a fun show even though a lot of people up north claimed to hate it, BTW I`m from Boston, Mass. and a country boy at heart, I hate city living. Peace and brother love to you and all.

I spent 10 years in Nashville TN doing electronics work for the music industry and Roy Clark is considered holy amongst professional musicians. He's one of the greats the public doesn't know.......just how amazing he is. If it weren't for Pro-tools I'd still be doing that kind of work.....in Nashville....and loving life. There's some fascinating people who can do beautiful things with an instrument.

Roy Clark was such an amazing guitar player and gentleman. Playing fast on a 12 string is not easy. It blows me away that Rolling Stone didn’t have him on their list of the top 250 guitarists. Personally, I think he should be in the top 100.

Just happened on your videos this evening. It was a treat watching the face of someone who clearly understands something about making music react to seeing a master at work. I grew up in the South in the 60's and 70's, where country music was second only to Elvis, and Roy Clark was one of the most-played artists on the radio stations of the time down there. And yes, he had a knack for picking up any string instrument and making it his own. Some of it was natural talent, but from all I've heard, he worked at his craft every moment that he could.
I especially love this video, later in his life, when his absolute love of the music is so clearly evident.
Many rock ,country stars who knew or met Clark said he was an amazing guitarist .

I'm 62, and I knew as a little kid he was special. If I heard he was going to be on Johnny Carson that night, I'd secretly stay awake to see him. Truly one of the GOATs.

I totally forgot how good this guy was! Not a country fan but remember watching Hee Haw with my parents and I really liked Roy Clarke back then. He could play anything with strings. It's fun to refresh my memory and to see a younger generation enjoying his talent. Huge talent for sure.
I'll never forget when Roy Clark was the head liner at the Garfield County Fair Days in Rifle Colorado. It was the same year that Exxon stopped operations in the area and about 2200 workers were laid off. It turned the area into a ghost town within a couple of weeks. At the end of the show Roy announced that all proceeds from the show is going to be donated to Rifle and the surrounding areas. What a class act he was. RIP Roy.
I'm glad to see some of these virtuoso's being rediscovered by younger generations! I admired Roy Clark when he was in his hey-day. And he could play more than the Guitar too. Another was Glen Campbell and the still living legend, Vince Gill! Often overlooked are the Ladies, like Barbara Mandrell who could play every instrument in the band.
you could put any instrument ever created in front of the Mandrell sisters and one of them could play it, and well at that.
You mentioned Glenn Campbell, who was absolutely a great, great guitar player. The only musician that ever played in the Wrecking Crew, yet couldn't read music. Imagine that.

Back in the early 60's, I was with a couple of friends in club in Juarez Mexico. As we weren't wearing evening jackets we had to sit in the bar. A performer came on stage and played "Malaguena"on the guitar. Fantastic performance. It wasn't until a decade or so later that I saw him on TV and discovered it was Roy Clark.

He always looked like he was having fun.
I got to meet Roy when I was younger. I actually got to interview him for a school project. He was the kindest, most humble man I think I have ever met, and he never let his talent or his fame go to his head. Roy was easily one of the most talented multi-instrumentalists to ever live: his skill on the guitar and banjo are unrivaled in my opinion. I would suggest listening to Malaguena (Spanish-style guitar) and Yesterday, When I Was Young (his biggest country hit). Thank you so much for listening to Roy and continuing his legacy!

Had an older friend visit the area from Michigan and told me he'd never had his heart blessed so many times. LOL
There is a clip of Roy playing this song on the Tonight show with Johnny Carson. Roy breaks three strings while playing and you can't really tell any difference. It's worth checking out.

Someone does something stupid you insult them and add Bless Your Heart, so it doesn't sound like an insult. If someone offends or disrespects you, you say "Are you having a bad day? Great reaction! I love this song. It has been recorded by so many artists. Roy does such a great version of it. He was such a wonderful entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary.
Him playing "Malaguena" on the "Odd Couple" (a sitcom from the '70's/80's?) and "Twelfth St Rag" are just a couple of my favorites. Edit: Never mind. Just saw that you already did them. All live, too.
"Bless Your Heart" is a southern thing. Now they come in two forms. There is the "neighbor brought over some chicken soup after finding out that you have been sick" Bless Your Heart. Then there is the "finding out Little Johnny has been stealing peaches from your peach tree" Bless Your Heart. That one usually comes out as, "Well bless his little pea pickin' heart." One is an " I Love You" the other is an "I'm gonna get you."
One of a kind”………When Mr Roy Clark first came into the scene it did not take long before everybody took- notice in that stage ….that when it came to his country music guitar playing skills and speed…..he gravitated in his own league all by himself and way-above all the others ….and no one ever came close to closing the gap…..and so they just enjoyed watching him perform and becoming part of the audience……
I thought my parents were weird for liking Roy Clark , Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed...I only listened to Van Halen and Def Leppard and thought every one else "stinks". Boy was I STUPID and NARROW-MINDED as a kid !?!?!?! These guys were THE TOP OF THE CLASS - and are STILL to this very day !! These three players I just listed have completely BLOWN MY MIND with their musical abilities and attitudes...they were all also class acts as human beings...wow do we miss them !!!

I think Roy felt extremely lucky to have had so much success (well deserved) and it kept him humble and from taking himself too seriously. He loved to entertain and clown around to garner a smile. I knew him from his time on "Hee Haw" and he always comes across as a really good hearted guy. Gone but never forgotten.

Roy also liked to be comedic. Hee Haw had him play Dueling Banjos a couple of times, usually with a healthy dose of humor mixed in. On another note, Ghost Riders In The Sky has been covered by a multitude of singers. It's probably one of the most iconic CW songs. A very early recording was done by The Sons Of The Pioneers (b/w, excellent version). Johnny Cash did a famous cover also. For a more modern twist, Geoff Castellucci sang it a capella and layered himself.

"Bless your (their) heart" is a sort of universal Southern statement when things are either good or bad. Sadly we lost Roy Clark in 2018 but I honestly believe that you could stretch 6 rubber bands across a cigar box and Roy would make it sound like a Stratocaster. I'm 60. All the guys and gals, across all genres, that I thought were clowns and jokes, when I was growing up, were actually classics and geniuses. Wow... I could have learned and appreciated so much more if I would have just payed attention and not been such a "clown" myself. Man, that OG could play! 👴
I loved roy on hee haw in the 70's but hid it from my friends,I kept a charlie pride 8 track under my truck seat for when I was alone ,,I was stupid for not learning what they knew and trying to be the next jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton
Roy died in 2018. For something completely different find a video of him singing "Yesterday, when I was young", There are videos out there with him not long before he died.
He was an amazing talent and man. Loved watching him play, he always gave his Best.
I grew up listening to country music because that's what mom always listened to. I really like Roy Clark! I'm really into soft rock, but I love me some country every now and then!
As a child I was amazed by Roy’s skill on guitar, he was the first person I saw that literally made it sing

Bless your heart, surprised you've never heard that expression before. Just guessing maybe you've never spent much time in Texas. And it's one of those lovely expressions we use that can have two meanings, kind of like Aloha. It can be a sincere heartfelt wish for you out of love. I once saw Roy Clark and Glen Campbell on TV. They both played the same guitar simultaneously. Unbelievable!

Roy was SUCH a nice guy. I happened to run into him when he was playing Topsfield fair near Boston in 1989. I share his last name, and my grandfather was his second cousin. He invited me into his tour bus, and we chatted for half an hour or so. He signed a photo for my grandfather. He was broke when young so he saved to buy a guitar. Once he mastered that, he sold it to buy a violin. Once he nailed that down, he traded for a mandolin...

He sings, too! You ought to hear him sing: "yesterday when I was young". This song stands out for all of us!
Sadly Roy Clarke is no longer with us , Passing away in 2018 on 15th November aged 85 ......Roy was one of my fav country music performers ....one of the old school R I P mr Clarke
