An amazing and touching moment of recognition when a playful octopus stops to hug the human she's bonded with as a friend over the span of her life. - Hry
Enjoying the final days of her life. Playing with fish, enjoying her environment, hugging her friend good bye for the last time. What an incredible documentary
A lovely comment Matthew. 😊👍
I wish they lived longer!
She was saying goodbye to him.
I am not ashamed to say as a big bloke from Yorkshire I blubbed like a baby watching this.
I love all animals big or small and cephalopods are some of the most remarkable of them all.
Absolutely beautiful sentient beings that deserve to be cherished.
Not stuck on some fuckwit's plate.
You're a gentle giant. Beautiful comment ❤️

Thank you so much Nola. 😊 X

Beautiful comment from a beautiful soul. 💘❤💗💯💞
Brings me to tears every time I watch this. It's an incredible documentary.
The octopus is the most underrated animal on the planet! What an amazing, beautiful creature. I actually shed a few tears watching this. It made me want to do better as a human.
I agree!
I am not ashamed to say I burst into tears.
SPOILER: I know he didn’t want to interfere with nature, but at the end, I was praying he’d pick her up and hold her. I was so upset he didn’t.😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
This was one of two of my all-time favorite documentaries in my 53 years.
Me too ❤
people don't give animals enough credit, that animal obviously bonded with him on an emotional level and knew her time was short. she was saying goodbye. my condolences to the filmaker on the loss of your special friend.
I'm not gonna lie- I cried ugly when the octopus hugged him!😭🐙❤ It's like she new it would be the last time she'd be with him again.
Genesis 1:28
She is so beautiful.
May she rest in peace.
❤️☹️
I love Craig's open-mindedness and willingness to allow himself to be vulnerable to such an unusual and mysterious creature, and recognize her beautiful qualities - her intelligence, playfulness, sweetness, and the ability to trust and love. Please see this movie if you haven't already. Just have a hanky with you, whether male or female.
I watched this show in it's entirety and it made me cry. I love these elegant, intelligent and beautiful animals. They're so loving and curious and want to trust and be trusted.
My Octopus Teacher is the most amazing story (and movie/documentary) that I've seen in a long time. I shall never think upon octopus in the same way again. They are truly amazing creatures. 🐙
Thank u it’s such an underrated documentary! I watch every day
So sweet, one last hug goodbye
I'm not crying. You're crying! =)
@@rewscott me too!
Very sweet indeed! I literally cried at the last words!
I wish we would have seen the octopus actually go up to him. This was done well. I really enjoyed it. I like how the Sharks cooperated and didn't bother the octopi as they openly mated
Her arm was around his waist, the other one around his arm. So she really did hug him.
God this documentary made me tear up... Just beautiful
Their friendship was beautiful, but watching this sweet octopus endure a torturous death was not. I don't understand how allowing an animal that trusted you and bonded with you to suffer could be beautiful especially when he had the means to help her. Sad? Yes. Beautiful? No.
@@GameChanger597 I don’t think the octopus felt anything. The octopus did not make an attempt to stay in the den or escape the fish, they were already nearly dead. Being eaten is the natural way to die, intervening to save the octopus would be in vain because they were already on their way out
@@tuckrex2038 He didn't feel that interfering on her turf in any was his right. She was on her way to dying extremely soon anyway after childbirth. He wanted to separate her from those predators, but he didn't.
@@jlbaker2000 that’s what I’m saying, it’s not right to intervene in such a natural process, and even at that in this context it’s in vain
Amazing managing to find the same octopus day after day for more then a year...extraordinary!
😢 I love her. I had no idea what octopi were like I’m so happy I watched her story.
I thought she was playing immediately. She seemed completely relaxed and carefree even, just enjoying her beautiful world and all the living, moving creatures in it. Gorgeous, wonderful footage. So sad to know she was dying soon and she probably knew that and was enjoying herself and saying her goodbyes. Thanks for sharing this very beautiful video.
I love how this documentary shows the closeness between these two & the relationship that developed! I really love this film, I'm sure he misses & thinks about her every day. How lucky was he (&her) to have had this experience... just wow!!
And all of us he shared it with!
Yet their closeness ended in him allowing his dear friend to be eaten alive. You would think he would have brought the octopus food while it was watching its eggs or at the very least shooed the fish away from eating it
@@GameChanger597 female Octopus die after giving birth, he was allowing nature to run its course. If he'd interfered it wouldn't have been right and humans disturbing nature and feeling they have the right to is sheer hubris, i applaud him for having the strength to not interfere, it must have taken a lot of courage.
@@EazyPS2 But that’s the thing. He DID interfere. That’s how his relationship and bond with the octopus came to be…. If he would have filmed the documentary and not have gotten involved at all, it would have been different. But he didn’t. He got involved, played with him, visited him, everyday for how many months….
And once he was in danger he would back off and film. He’s an idiot. Imagine the footage or what we could have learned if he would have made the documentary based on his relationship with the octopus. Something no one has seen before. It made no sense to me and makes me angry thinking what that poor octopus felt thinking that was his friend.
@@steffe.g.2043 like I said before, Octopus die after giving birth. There is nothing he could have done to stop it, they all die after giving birth, nothing he could've done to stop that not even bringing HER food would've helped, they give up straight after a they birth a clutch of eggs, FACT
That last image got to me...few things do, but this...this is one of those few. How we humans choose to connect to creatures does matter. So many things can be said without a spoken word, but for a moment of kindness says everything and more than any dictionary can define in a lifetime.
I cried at the end
Me too.
And me. X
everyone did.
Tears here too
Sad but sweet. I had a feeling she was just playing. Octopi are wondrous creatures, so smart.
This is my favorite scene in the movie
Mine too!
Sad to lose your little friend. It’s a pity that they have short lives. I hope that you can make friends with another one. 🌸
Octopus is intelligent and sensitive
This was up there wth the most powerful scenes i ever witnessed, shawshank level
Why the octopus is one of my favorite animals, so intelligent, mysterious. I envy his relationship with her. I can't imagine having this experience with such a spectacular being. I cried so much during the documentary.
😭😭I bawled at that part it was her saying goodbye
I have watched so many of such documentaries, but this..this was was documentary of a LIFE TIME!!!! This is the MOST magical thing I have ever seen and I have learned SO MUCH!!!
Great! Check this out... www.dailymotion.com/video/x7ie2h4
If people in enough numbers could leave our fearful greed driven world long enough to actually take the time to learn what truly amazing, powerful, beautiful and spiritual lessons can be experienced on this very singular earth, well maybe I would have more hope. The future is not written yet...... Films like My Octopus Teacher touch my heart and light up a dark place.
She was a truly beautiful soul.
She was so amazing! So smart and friendly. Sometimes I think of her and cry. I wish she had lived longer and easier life. Hope her babies are healthy and safe. 🙏
It’s like she knew the end was near 😢
I haven’t even watched the show and I am in tears. Phew
From INDIA lots of love to everyone who liked this film and those who got deeply touched by the maker of this film. You have got an enormous heart and wisdom to spot the beauty of little creatures. A heart to love and cry.
I have watched everyone I have ever loved die before their time.
But if one animal, human or any other sentient being remembers you than for their span you never really die at all. X
You are so right.
Beautiful sentiment. 💗💘💖💞
Every sentient being knows when they are going to the darkness forever.
But at least they lived.
If you have done one good thing in your life, love or been loved then your Planck Time Span on this speck of dust is worth it.
But no matter what or how your your circumstances have been never give up. 😊👍
I was terrified seeing octopus as a child but now I find them to be so mysterious and incredible.
Okay, who cut the onions in here. Amazing!
I just found this film by accident and watched it. I thought I would probably enjoy it because I once watched a PBS special where a scientist brought an octopus to live in a tank in his home, and that documentary was fantastic. This film was incredible! It was so moving to see the relationship between Craig and the octopus. Absolutely loved it!
Name of documentary?
It made me cry a lot ….. especially as she aged … damn I’m at it again
Simply brilliant. And I emphasize, brilliant. Recommended viewing.
If you guys like this, you have to watch the turkey documentary. About a man who is the parent, and then friends to baby, to adult turkeys. Wonderful documentary.
Octopus cuddles? Just as with kitten or kid! O bravest planet, to have such things in't!
We have no clue how special it is and allow our ruler's to ruin it for us all!!! We have no clue what we are doing! It's an atrocity!!!
I watched the full documentary, made me cry I would of scared the other attackers off when they came for her if I was the man
Guess that answers my question, you were lucky to know such a special being. It's good to see intelligence and emotions in animals. It makes you feel more humble and helps you gain wisdom and compassion.
I wish all the people who eat them could all see this documentary
So beautiful! Thanks for sharing your journey with her. This changed my life. Xo
There's a PBS Nature documentary called "Octopus: Making Contact" you'd love if you can find it.
Netflix... Or you could try the YT channel of Netflix, sometimes they put them there 4 free
We are ALL connected 😮😢😊 Blessings
I watched the entire documentary for the 4th time today. Such a remarkable film.
Tears, seriously. But ,was she dead the first time he saw her out of the den after giving birth (not the 2nd time when the shark got her?) If so, I wish he would have picked up and held her one last time . All in all, amazing.
The movie is so beautiful .
Thankyou for even this little clip . Xxx
Thats really special. Thank you for sharing this with the world. Now your octopus friend will live on in all of us too.
I want to learn to hold my breath for 30 minutes and one day I will. I'll be able to swim with the fish and make friends with them in the new world 💕 Your documentary was touching 😢
Mr. Pizza Marlon
I want to learn to hold my breath for 30 SECONDS
what a sweet squishy sea spider
He should have "shoed" those damn pajama sharks. I would have skewered them when they were stacked in the cave. Because there will be other sharks. The natural process will be just fine
I am just glad that octopuses have such short lives and exist mainly on crabs. They can grow incredibly fast and consume a lot of sea life in the process. Oh, and they are incredibly strong and smart.
Truely astounding
I was definitely crying
Me too.
Me as well I was balling.😥 so beautiful..
@@erasedfromgenepool.4845 And the bit with the Pyjama shark? Dirty little bastard! Worst villain ever! So angry and upset I was shouting at the TV.
@@rewscott I was more upset he didnt do anything. He wasnt a neutral observer by that point. The octo was a semi-pet at this point.
It would be like a stray cat that youve been feeding for months and you see it hiding from a coyote. Would you sit idly by and let nature run its course or would you help your friend?
@@StuUngar Do anything in what way? The pajama shark attack? That was very upsetting to me too, and him if I recall, but he was trying to remain an observer, and really hadn't done anything more than say Jane Goodall did with the chimps or Dian Fossey with gorillas. He hadn't fed or provided for the octopus or taught or provided for it in any way to help survive. He was just very close. But it's hard not to get involved, and even harder to not feel for those observed. Personally, I wanted to kill the pajama shark. I was crying!
They are spectacular ❤
Amazing, if you didn’t show this I would have no idea that such things existed. Thank You for the post 😁
You make the world feel that bit softer
Thankyou from my heart
I have watched your show beyond beautiful
Love from Australia
Cried my eyes out watching this, incredibly moving story.
It’s like she knew she’d never see him again hence that intense embrace. Maybe she was pregnant (as octopi 🐙 die after giving birth)? I swear i will never eat octopi again 😢🐙
She hadn't yet mated at that point, but did just days later, and produced eggs. It is an interesting thought though, that she might have anticipated that the end was near for her, time for a new generation, and she was saying goodbye.
Please don't ever eat them again!!! We have so much else to choose from!
She said see.. look what I did.
This is an amazing scene and has changed my life forever.
Beautiful story, thank you for sharing.
Not food… Friends.
loved it! Will watch it again, for sure!
I DESPISE the fact that there are people in the world that eat these magnificent beings!!! 😡
Pigs are far more intelligent and emotionally capable than octopuses, yet you make a fuss about the people who eat octopuses and not about other intelligent animals like pigs who get eaten?
Just a man and his octopus
Loved the documentary !
Thank youfor the amazing videos with this wonderful creature. Even her ending is beautiful.
The octopus is one of the most amazing creatures to ever grace the planet earth. They literally came from dna on an asteroid millions of years ago. They are literally from a different planet. Study and seen so many over the years in my career and to this day , out of the 1000s of specials of animals I have seen and studied , the octopus will forever remain undefeated in my book.
God created them.
What a beautiful video :)
That's so beautiful....
Just beautiful
I watched it on Netflix 🐙
simply adorable, all creatures great and small I love them.
Petition to make octopuses genetically live longer!
That is the best suggestion I've heard in so long! They are remarkably intelligent creatures, but the most significant limitation on their intelligence is their short lifespan and lack of overlap in generations. They can't learn from their parents/predecessors, and in effect, they have to learn everything for the first time as it happens. If they were longer lived they could do so much more, intellectually and emotionally!
@@rewscott
What a wonderful post Andrew. 👍
Nature is so cruel
A sentient being living so very shortly just breaks my heart.
😢
My brothers first and middle name is Andrew Scott. Octopuses rock.
Now THIS is the shape of water
I've been thinking the same thing lmao. The bond was more. She clearly felt something more to trust him. Especially the walking on her legs and the dress bit. That was her showing off to him.
I will never understand how he didn't intervene to give the octopus food or stop the other fish from eating it while it was still alive. He has a funny way of honoring this sweet, majestic animal that he loved and says taught him so much.
@ThePizzageek I totally get that when you're someone who's just exploring and keeping to yourself, but when you insert yourself into the life of another animal and make your presence known on a daily basis and form a bond in a connection you never thought imaginable, it just doesn't make sense to allow an animal to suffer like that without so much as offering the slightest bit of relief. I feel as though only someone who is cold-hearted or at the very least someone who is a bit dense would think and feel this way. For those who understand the love between someone who has all the strength and power in the world to do something, and an animal who is innocent and helpless, this way of thinking makes no sense.
@ThePizzageek The entire point of a friendship is to involve yourself in another's world. I'm glad I was warned about the end of this film before I watched it. Now I may not take the time to view it.
@@matthewmosier8439 completely agree.
Yea he definitely allowed it to get hurt for suspenseful television. No way I wouldn't protect something that considered me its friend. Imagine doing that to a dog.
@@GameChanger597 To do what, exactly. Capture her and confine her in a tank? Spend all his time in the water guarding her? Do you bring the street person you befriend home with you or make yourself responsible for them 24/7?
I literally cried from this bRo
Such a great movie. Watch the whole thing!
I was infuriated that the Octopus was out playing with her friend and when the bullies came, he watched, and filmed. That's not how friendship works.
I was pretty choked up too, but you have to understand that as a documentary filmmaker he wasn't allowed to interfere or the project would lose credibility and not be made as it would be considered falsified.
If it helps at all filmmaker Craig Foster was truly choked up about the attack too.
I agree, I hated that part and found it hard to watch. It still bothers me, but we never would have seen it otherwise. Except maybe on CZcams as a simple diver encounter.
@@rewscott I disagree, the documentary was about the bond, he betrayed that bond. If he just setup a camera to observe, that is one thing. But he interacted, and that was the good part. Sorry, not surprised he is miserable, he is a narcissist and possibly psychotic (lacks empathy).
@@doubletake1238 Wow!! Such a conclusion. You aren't a famous credible psychologist are you??
@@brgilbert2 Nope. Just a run of the mill loyal friend.
@@brgilbert2 yea I agree with double take. He definitely interacted and betrayed that bond 🤷♀️. No wonder he looks so miserable. There is a huge reason this didn't go as far and as big as it could have and that's because deep down we all know it. Octopus are highly highly intelligent and we are being wilfully stupid if we think that doesn't translate into emotion and other forms of consciousness. He already intervened 10000000000% and there was no good reason at all to just sit by .
i ugly cried at this
Wow!.so wonderful and tender,..
This is Incredible
My God, what you experienced
was moving beyond words.
You were blessed by the Creator
in that moment.
Human females suffer from post partum, which is hormonal and results in a very serious depression, which feels hopeless. Female octopuses experience something similar, but to a much more debilitating degree. Its very cruel. They start biting off their body parts.
Amazing and beautiful.
Having said what I did, isn’t it about time we shed this anthropocentric view of the world and gave the status or changed the status of intelligence to the many other creatures that we share this planet with. I’d like to say a lot more, but I’ll just leave it at that and hope someone else picks up the reigns.
wow!
Dang. Being forced to think. Another mindless day, lost & down the drain...
