Impermanence
From Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha, the symbolic gesture in which monks spend great time and effort to create beautiful and intricate Mandalas, only to destroy them with a simple swipe of the hand. All things pass.

    did anyone else feel weird watching this film? I feel like he might have tried things with the octopus. Like the relationship had some weird sexual tension. Was he sexual with the octopus, perhaps? The editing was kinda funny, he was getting that octopussy day/night imho

    It's in the interest of scientific dispassion not to anthropomorphize this animal. Disclaimer: I haven't watched this entire documentary. But from what clips I've seen on YT, the octopus's gestures can generally be attributed to curiosity, exploration, and investigation. What we can gather for sure is that she had this big creature constantly in her life, which she eventually determined not to be dangerous. This does not mean she accepted him as a "friend"; she just tolerated his presence. Even the "hug" - well, there's no evidence that an octopus understands the amicable or social nature of a hug (remember, it's a fundamentally solitary creature), so we really don't know why she clung to him. She could have simply appreciated his body heat. I used to catch garter snakes as a kid, and, even though they resisted at first, eventually they'd voluntarily wrap around my hand and not be inclined to leave, even if I held them back near the ground. This doesn't mean they "loved" me; they just liked my body heat. Octopuses apparently exhibit some of the more primitive emotions, such as fear, anger, and frustration, and even intelligent curiosity, but friendship and love are far more complex; it's a stretch to attribute "love" even to apes, chimps, elephants, dolphins - or your dog or cat.

    • @Arjun-eb1yc
      @Arjun-eb1yc Před 5 měsíci

      what do you think is so unique about human brains that allows us to feel love while other apes cannot? I know you think you are being scientific by trying not to anthropomorphize. But in evolution a lot is conserved, the shorter the evolutionary gap the more is conserved.

    • @RB-bd5tz
      @RB-bd5tz Před 5 měsíci

      @@Arjun-eb1yc I'm a Christian. And before you write me off as a small-minded fool, I have to say I believed in evolution, but now I see that the only "evidence" for evolution is hypothesis and conjecture; it is not scientific because it has never been observed, and is untestable by the scientific method. More to the point: I accept that animals can feel emotions: fear, anger, happiness, sadness, excitement, curiosity - and even "strong like" and "strong dislike" - but "love" and "hatred" involve morality. Biblically, humans are the only moral earth-bound creatures - and there is a definite divide between humans and animals even among evolutionists, who don't hold animals morally responsible for their actions. It can't be said that apes "love" their mates; they don't generally even mate for life. And though a few apes do (as well as other animals), we can't definitively say this is out of "love" per se - they could just realize that it's advantageous to be paired, or it could just be instinctive/genetic behaviour. Real love is unselfish; I can't think of an animal that engages in any relationship that it does not somehow benefit from, or that would, of its own free will, actually sacrifice itself to save another (even if it might protect its mate, companion, or young, up to a point). The simplest explanation is usually the correct (or best) one; ascribing "love" to an animal brings in a bunch of unnecessary (and unprovable) moral baggage.

      Again people like you think animals cannot feel as we do. Even fucking fruit fly's have been shown to have a level of conscious thought. Sorry but someone who believes in a fictional ancient fairytale character walking on water and rising from the dead is fucking dumber than a tapeworm with dementia. Phil.
