  • Rove Dashcam captures a Derecho in the Cherry Valley and Rockford area Northbound on Monday, August 10th, 2020
Driving into a Derecho Captured on Dashcam full footage
From the distance, you can see the dark and ominous line of cloud for miles. This storm packed quite a punch with gusty and destructive winds reaching close to 60 mph and in some locations worst. Limited visibility, heavy downpours and cloud to ground lighting were the primary threats shown in this video. We didn't get hit quite as hard as Iowa did however, it was still quite an intense storm. I didn’t get a chance to capture all the damage from the tornados we had which took place over by Forreston, Mulford Rd, Roscoe and other places. On camera the storm doesn’t seem as intense but driving in it in person was a different story. I could feel the winds shaking and moving the car. Please enjoy the content.

I am glad you missed the worst of the Derecho. We saw a billboard, the old kind with the huge steel I-beam legs, folded back on itself to the ground, on Hwy-30 just west of Cedar Rapids.

it's tricky... when one hit Southern ON and Quebec last month, NOBODY expected the storm to be as bad as it was going to be.. don't think even the experts knew what was coming until pretty late, if not too late. I know alerts were sent out, at least in some areas, just minutes before it hit. For my area? None of us got an alert.. or at least no one in my household (we get Amber Alerts so it wasn't a matter of not being connected). Our side of the city got off lightly, opposite side lost power and trees. But yea.. I'm shocked at anyone who kept driving.. especially in areas with lots of potential hazards like trees and power lines..
