My dad was in the Air Force in the early mid 80s and got stationer in North Dakota for a bit. I didn't realize they kept planes going to Russia non stop and would turn around just before their air space and that they flew north to reach them. Can only imagine how much money it cost to keep planes running non stop and the personnel to keep them going.

I grew up just a few dozen miles from Seymour Johnson AFB. If even this one bomb had detonated, Goldsboro and the town I grew up in would have been decimated, if not destroyed altogether. No one ever talked about this when I was growing up. Maybe so we wouldn't be scared but yes, it did happen.

The nuke off Daufusky island was found last year by some Canadian tourists diving in the sound.I grew up boating in those waters,and always thought it was too murky to dive in.
