Lyrics
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win - Hudba
This is the best rendition of Thunder Road...I might have to say...ever...!!
My black lesbian friends love this version
Love the way he lets her sing "Climb in, Mary" at the end. I've never seen two performers enjoying themselves so much.
She explains the back story in this video :)

These two complement one another so well. This performance is a treasure. Melissa is such a passionate singer!
Absolutely the best version of Thunder Road, and the best and most beautiful duet ever ...
Anyone can be your Mr ✅️ he just has to want you
To share a stage with the most talented recording artist of the last 50 years must be exhilerating...this is a fabulous version of one Bruce's masterpieces.
This song absolutely rocks. I love that 12 string that Melissa is playing.
This song is Springsteen's Masterpiece.
Springsteen sings to me only...telling me it's ok to be ordinary and in pain. All will be well in the end.
My friend you wrote the best comment...everything will be ok...you have my wishes too...
@@deunasni2751 My friend a great comment. Carry on. I hope all is better for you 3 years later. If not as you wrote it will all be okay in the end.
these two are amazing together...both sing with such passion...
This is probably the best rendition of Thunder Road...ever...love it!!
I have never been the biggest Bruce fan, but this is one of the greatest music videos In my opinion
Steven, I used to say that Bruce was a national treasure; that he has become our nation's conscious.
But this is an insult to him, and to those around the world who feel about him as I do.
He is simply too great - his themes too univerally poignant, his impact too widespread, his ability to help us all to understand the human condition and be better people because of it, his ability to bring us closer together - for any group or nation to claim him.
Bruce Springsteen is a human treasure.
2 of the best right there. 2 warriors
This song was always well written. The energy and passion of Melissa Etheridge make it unmistakable. This is as good as it gets. Not sure if I will live long enough to have a song grip my passion as this one does. I get goose bumps every time they sing "Tel me what else can we do now except roll down the windows and let the wind blow back your hair" Great use of imagery and less than that...just great harmony
I bet Mary goes with him after hearing that romantic line. :)
When Melissa, at the end of the song says: "...so Mary climb in..." you really have no words to explain the emotion she gives...
"...Except roll down the window and let the wind blow baby "

@@yos9270 here 13 years later also haha
…and now we know why. czcams.com/video/iXjerU6EORU/video.html
Every so many years I have to come back and watch this video. Perfection.
One of my all time favourite songs... reminds me of never ending nights in the 60s in my car with a beautiful blonde girl
Amazing collaboration, amazing musicians, amazing voices. Warms my heart.
Didn't think this song could get better, then it did! :)
Grazie per la traduzione.Canzone stupenda. BRAVI.
1:43, goose bumps every time !
Superb .
Magical! I've watched this a number of times but I never get tired of it.
Perfect pairing of two incredible voices.
It's like two friends talking about their experiences, realizing that they have one in common. They decide to make it a beautiful song. I know Bruce wrote this a long time ago, but they shared the moment in this song. Great performance!
The laughter by Bruce at the end was due to the fact that Melissa almost missed her queue to sing, "So Mary climb in". She squeezed it in but it caused Bruce to crack up.
She'd messed up that part earlier, but got it right at that point so he laughed. (Whew, got it!)
99 out of 100 times you'd be right, but you missed on this one. This is great, a brilliant, - a truly magnificent version of one of Bruce's classic songs. We are watching the best there has ever been or will ever likely be. and Ms. Ethridge makes it even better, impossible though that may seem.
"So Mary climb in..."
Awesome!
"In the lonely cool before dawn!" Beautiful poetry!
probably the best duet in rock history
What a great version - Melissa's voice sounds so much like Bonnie Tylers, it's scary...can't believe there's another woman with such a great rough, crispy voice - I just love the sound of it - so powerfull and unique!
There is only one word that can describe this: AWESOME!
I really like Bruce Springsteen and also Melissa.
But together they rock like no one else.
I remember i saw this unplugged live. The moment Melissa said that Bruce was comin', I tought "Shit, this is gonna be historic". And so it was
shivers down my spine, hair standing at the base of my neck, tears in my eyes. what a beautiful song.
Thank you so very much for posting this video. This is my favourite Bruce song, always gives me chills, and the combination Bruce & Melissa is magical. Thank you!
They both have raw, powerful voices; together, it's magic!
WOW. This is so good it's tear-jerking. And I can sing third harmonies on it! :D Definitely a fitting tribute to my favorite song by The Boss, and as richly, classically folk as he likes to do things these days. This one's a winner. (It's #1 on my All Time Top Ten Rock Lyrics, too.)
Next to his solo piano version on the Live 1975-85 box set, this is my favorite version of this song.
its funny, its not the most perfect song ever, but this performance has to be one of those that moves me the most.
"not the most perfect song ever"
Don't be blaspheming in here.
+Mitch Berg I've got too many favorite songs to count, but if pressed, I'd have to say this is the greatest song ever written. The piano and harmonica intro, sounding like opening the front door to the sunrise, a new day with new possibilities, then "The screen door slams" behind you and you're off.
Pete Townsend said it best "When Springsteen sings on his new album, that's not about having fun. That's fuckin Triumph, man!" And this song is the optimistic, desperate, defiant, beginning of the story of Born To Run. It has every thing that makes Rock N Roll great, but most importantly, Freedom and Fuckin Triumph, man
LEGEND...(WAIT FOR IT)...DARY¡¡¡,I GREW UP WITH THIS SONG, AND THE FIRST THAT I REMEMBER TO HEARD IN MY LIFE, BACK IN CHILDHOOD
wow...i thought this was going to ruin the song...but this was close to as good as the origional...bruce springsteen is and always will be a legend...and the best in my opinion...his music will always be a part of my family..."its more than music...its a life lesson with words that rhyme" - my dad
country singer? i say nay. he still sounds great. he's much older than he was in the 70s and 80s and he's taken a much more subtle approach to his songs, and at his age, in his setting, it seems, it suits him well.
a song with a video that makes me smile and laugh and cry all at the same time.
karma
Is this actually the best thing ever done on this planet?
one of best songs ever. Bruce and Melissa are my favourite singers and togheter.... WOW! amazing performance!
HAPPY 61st BIRTHDAY BRUCE! Europe has music immortals like Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Wagner. America has Springsteen. WE WIN!!!! If The Boss is considered a legend for no other reason, then Thunder Road is plenty!
This is such an amazing collaboration. Two of my favorite artists, i wish they did this more often.
Absolutely love this performance by Bruce and Melissa.
It really doesn't get any better than that. Way to go Melissa and Bruce.
Springsteen is still sounding and looking great!
agreed 100%....what bruce did in the late 70s and early 80s (river tour) simply just wasn't from this world....so many epic versions of songs like badlands, prove it all night, thunder road, racing in the street...
Ill Never forget the 1st Day I heard this song. It was 1979, me and a Buddy went on a Road trip to Wisconsin, Drinking, Fishing etc. From the 1st moment i heard this song I became a Springsteen Fanatic. Best Song Ever. Our Last Road trip was to The Football hall of Fame. Bruce Happened to be in Cleveland. We purchased some sweet seats from a scalper. It was a Night I'll never Forget. My Friend passed away shortly after that. He's "casing the Promiseland" I guess
Spectacular harmonizing here. Always a great song, slow or fast versions.
Bruce Springsteen is the BEST ENTERTAINER of our time,, and he deserves a LifeTime Achievement Grammy award,,even though he still entertaining..lets recognize this enormous talent and thank God for giving him to our generation !!!! Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce
Objectivly
best song of the centuries
wonderful
you can diing quite, bruce,
you done it
Respect
looks like this was done in the mid 1990's hes still got it man. he's awesome, the lady to, never heard her stuff before but the voices mesh well.
They aren't booing- they are shouting "Brrruuuucceeee"! At my first Springsteen concert I thought they were booing, too, until I realized they were saying "Bruce". Happens at all the concerts of his that I have been to.
When I'm driving down the road and this version of the song comes on, I roll down the window and let the wind blow back my hair, belting the song out like I'm on stage with Bruce and Melissa.
Bruce, my friend, will be seeing you next year in Amsterdam. Have front row tickets!!!!
Melissa is perfect for his music!
Mid Nineties... I bought the cd single around 1996... Gee, what a song. A friend of mine - a writer - wrote a small essay about it.
Sheer brilliance. I've sung this along with Bruce at 11 concerts in the UK and America and never tire of it. This just underlines what an excellent song it is, a whole film script in four and a half minutes.
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS SONG, PERFORMANCE, MAN, WOMAN...JUST FANTASTIC!! 👏🏼😝❤️💋💋
this is a fantastic performance, which make me stuck in the moment when I riding with my motorcycle while dust and wind blow my face......
Love the acoustic guitars....love the harmony parts, some of which I always imagined and sang along to the radio ....................
Meeting my bucket list with my dad and brothers and sister.
This is so good I don't want to share it with anyone ---ever.
If any song will give you shivers, it's this version. Just beautiful.
So funny when she messes up at the end! Two absolutely stellar live performers!
How can you not love and respect this performance of an incredible song?
beyond any description and praise...
Bruce keep on singing....
If anyone has ever written a better song than this, I've yet to hear it.
"There are ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you've sent away, they haunt this dusty beach road and the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets..."
Just the greatest lyric.
Oh man alive, truely magical.
Shivers down my back bone brrrrr
Crème de la crème! Formidable!
I wonder if Bruce even knows how fucking great this song is.. This song touches my soul every time I hear it, reminds me of when I was 20, young restless and longing for love and freedom.
The Saviour of Rock n Roll Bruce and Rock renegade Melisa at their best.
This song surface at all my parties, on youtube, spotefy and riped mp3....bruce is brilliant as ever, but melissa brings me the water i`m longing for....the bestt regards for this two artists from norway....
Sit tight, take hold! This is awesome!
stop my heart!!! ear popping, soul stirring, mind numbing, chilling and thrilling!1!! rock and roll doesn't get any better than that.
I lived this dream, it was in Phoenix. I prayed for a good man, worked in Topless bars, Ha ha! Met one right across the street from where I grew up, in a neighborhood bar.
Not that young any more ..... Thank you - a fabulous rendition\
dang, what a great tune. Springsteen sounds as crisp as he did in the early '70s. He's gotta be one of the greatest musicians of the 20th centhry
This gives me GOOSEBUMPS no matter how many times I hear it! Love it! Bruuuuuuce!!! And Melissa too....love you girlfriend.
One of his best lyrics ever - sheer rock and roll poetry!
Storytellers VH1 DVD, Bruce walks you through the lyrics. "So you're scared and you're thinking we ain't that young anymore"...he says he wrote all the BTR songs in 74, 2 years after Vietnam. He said, "NOBODY was ever that young again"...so true. Changed our nation forever.
Such an Amazing Song...amazing artists. I really think Age has brought even more depth to both this evocative, bittersweet Ballad and Bruce and Melissa as Artists. I could cry a River listening to this version.
I am from Leavenworth, Kansas. I never cared for Melissa until this video. If I ever run into her around here, I will ask her how awesome it felt to be a participant in a classic.
Thanks Nathrillo.
I have been a fan of Bruce since the 60s and of Mellissa from the first time i heard her. simply a great duet and a fantastic version
best duet, EVER.
Amen! This is my favorite Springsteen song. To bad he doesnt sing it at his shows much anymore.
Finally saw Melissa live this past weekend. Phenomenal! I have seen Bruce many times and travelled from Sydney to LA to just to see him live. Melissa has now been added to the travel worthy category. Would love to see her live again and will not be waiting for her to come to Australia for it.
The whole VH1 concert of Melissa is beyond greatness!!!
What a powerhouse!!! Show me a more emotional duet
the last line..... This is a town ful of losers and i pulling out of here to win...that is the kind of feeling this song give to me!
fantastic i stood for a while first time in my life i never uttered a word x
I got CHILLS !!!!!! AWESOME DUET
Brilliant!!!!!
The best moment of this for me is when Bruce first sings. I mean, obviously it's him, and all, but he is such a legendary and mythical figure that he doesn't quite seem really real, really present, until I hear his distinctive voice. It's like, "My God, that's really Bruce Springsteen."
Strange, I know, but that's how it hits me.
Best version ever!
bruce springsteen > all bands put together
I will never never tire of this xxxxxx
Just listened to this video for the first time - and time stood still.
Perfect - no more needs to be said.
