I use sticks propped up against my AR it looks really nice because of the different thicknesses and "stick" or "twig" shapes. I start out with a base coat of black paint, then prop my sticks up and do a coat of green. I leave the sticks where they are and I go around with a few sprays of tan and dark brown here and there. Really cool effects when you spray different colors from opposite angles to create a "shadow" effect.
Just bought my Axis .30-06 a week ago. Then found your video (and was SERIOUSLY impressed--lol!) by your *several* shots at a thousand yards with your Axis...
It instantly made me feel better about buying such an inexpensive rifle!
Bout to paint mine in the morning! Thanks for making your videos!
🖒😎
Outstanding...I used fish net as wrap for a scalloped look.
Looks great! I would like to mention that additional coats of paint are typically applied prior to the previous coat coming to a full cure so there is better adhesion between coats. The instructions on the can may even say it.
Use a thicker twine along with the thin and two colors of paint.....
You can be as elaborate or as simple as you want.
That's what is so great about it....
Great idea!
Right where my mind went too. I like a three color pattern and using a thicker twine with the next color would provide that extra breakup and keep the soft edges working. I'm probably going to roll this method on my new 6.5 Creedmoor rig.
Thank you for the video. Some day I’ll give this a go. I’m a bit hesitant but I guess you could always cover it up.
LBS I tried this on several stocks . I saved the twine since I used several colors. Im going to use it for binding. . my stocks turned out Great. Thanks for Sharing.
Happy to hear! Post some pics to IG and tag me!
I'm impressed, looks pretty dang good. I now think that I may do my PC9 Carbine stock in gray. I like the price WAY better than Cerakote and cheap enough to redo or change if I like. 👍👍
Very nice and simple. I have been wanting to do a paintjob on my Tikka stock just for fun. Maybe something like mostly gray or black with some orange accents because it's my favorite color. I might have to try something like this. Thanks!
Nice. I've wanted to do one with local colors and local foliage as the masking material. Maybe an olive or sage color base coat, then lay some actual sage and maybe some mesquite bows over the stock and hit it with a good FDE/Sonoran sand kind of color. Haven't decided which rifle, but I'll get brave enough to do it at some point.
Looks good I've used this method on a couple of guns I put a couple coats of clear over the paint very durable
I think that is awesome!! A little bit a time and you have a sweet looking pattern. Glad you shared that idea, never saw it done with twine
Same
I just can NOT believe you didnt put the parts back on and show it at the end.. unbelievable.
Awesome job thanks for the info looks alot easier than I though your rifle looks amazing
Great video. I used your jute technique, plus 2 colors (khaki and brown) along with cedar branches. Game changer on a boring black stock.
That's a pretty good camo job. Great video brother!!
I love the look of the rope. I will definitely will be doing this to my hunting rifle. I may also try one with barbwire.
Some netting or coarse burlap strips might look cool as well.
That was awesome, Gives me the idea of blotching the black with Silver and red before wrapping it in twine to give it may be a barbed wire look.
I used an old shirt and cut 2 different patterns into it then used OD Green, Tan, and dark forest green. I used Tan as the base, forest green for the patterns, and OD green to blend it.
That was simple and awesome thanks
Looks great. I reckon after the first coat, you could leave the twine on, wrap more twine, and spray another color.
hondasaki900 Great idea!
Gotta love the creative minds
Cool idea!! Thanks for sharing.
600 grits sandpaper helps the paint adhere better, and provides a grippier surface. Also, I have found that a $3 bag of varied size rubber bands allows for even more pattern flexibility. Twisting up gauze and wrapping might be good too if you don't want sharp lines.
Awesome love it gonna do my Davey Cricket.. ..
I did a camo job on my mossberg blaze 22lr. It has a olive base coat, then i used dark brown and made some stripes all along the stock. Then the last top layer i put a bunch of marijuana leaves for foilage and sprayed over with black spray paint. It looks cool now.
I like the look of the savage. I'd hate to do mine and mess it up. If I had the option of attempting it myself or just having it look like your savage I'd probably just go with yours. Well done.
I really like that. The only thing I might do differently is add mists of darker brown and maybe light green.
Looks good! I'm thinkin it might look real good on my squirrel rifle! Thank you!
Wonderful Thank you
Looks good I did the very thing on my Tikka 6.5cm
Nice
I'd use some slight streaks of green or brown in a few places to give it a bit more contrast. Also, especially with the Rustoleum paint it tends to have a chalky feel to it I don't like when dry. I always seal mine with at least one coat of flat clear coat just to fix that and also helps protect longevity. But you can always just repaint these when they wear- kind of fun to give them a fresh look every so often anyway. Liked the vid!
Thank you! Great suggestions.
I saw something similar with rubber bands of different width. To add more, tie more twine in different spots before removing twine and hit those areas with some od green, and tie more rwine, and hit lightly with dark forest brown. Try that and see what you think! Nature is seldom monotone or bi-toned, nature is also very random. You produced a nice and interesting pattern, but not a random pattern....that is an oxymoron! To camo anything you want randomness, not patterns! Ha ha.
I was thinking he used rubber bands. Would have saved a little time
Thank you for inspiring me. I have an old break barrel Iver Johnson 12 gauge I have begun converting to a backpacker/bugout gun. I ordered a couple of adapters for it...9mm and .22 Cal and I have shortened the long barrel down to a legal length, sanded the wood stock and foregrip and painted all flat black. Tomorrow the twine goes on in preparation for the khaki and possibly white paint. I am going to try tying knots in the twine like barbed wire, my wife's idea. Thanks again brother.
Great idea! Maybe even leave little tails coming out of each knot to look like the barbs?
I learned a great deal about using twine on this project. Had to reinforce it with wire and could not pull it tight enough to get "barbs" close enough to the work to image what I desired. You did say in your video to be sure the twine is tight for that very reason. However, I had some single stat electrical wire that I twisted around 550 Paracord and although it doesn't print exactly like barbed wire it is interesting and I really like the result. Is there any way to share a photo with you without putting our personal info out there?
@@thomasstanovich9997 Sure! If you're on Facebook, send it to me there... facebook.com/thelateboyscout . You can also post it to IG and tag me @lateboyscout
Mmmm....like it, now I'm going to spray my Savage with a brown and khaki base coat, the wrap and spray white.
That would look wild!
I have already done my gun and 6 friends guns and thank you I have made good money off of this I truly thank you sir.... you don't know unless you try..,. Go d bless.,...,,
Looks good 👍
I live in Michigan so we have a lot more forest mixed into our environment. i think I would like to try doing it exactly this way to start then go over top using Officer Greg's wavy line sharp edge/fade method to add some OD, brown, &/or forest green.
Could also camo over the string with sponges and different colors. Would be cool going to try. Don't forget clear coat
I have done my savage 110 in 6.5 creadmore ,but after it dries I went over it with a natural Spong in florescent orange, then 4 coats of matte paint.., it's nothing like I have ever seen.the tan tones it down, but the matte clear britens it up.i already have 6 people that want this done.....,
Cool!!!
Oh yeah, that nifty "camo" job will work great if you're hiding in the pile of STRING.
USAF Capt. ret. 20th SOS, 27th Spl Ops Wing.
I like more of a multi color look, so only thing different would be to paint a few random oriented stripes of dark green and dark brown around on it before taking off the twine just for more of a break up effect. I prefer to paint the entire long gun on the stock...so a bit more wrapping would be necessary. Nice job.
The Marine corps sniper way is to paint it a flat color first, then hold branches from shrubs or native trees in the area you hunting on the stock while you are painting them directly another earth tone color, comes out pretty good for a cheap rifle stock anyways.
you can also do netting for mroe texture
Thanks bro I’m copying that on my cz452 ultra lux
May try this in an AR. Thanks.
I just used a digital camo template it turned out good but after seeing this I like it camo with the sticks and leaves then a barbwire wrap and spay would look pretty cool !!!!!!!!!
Yea that's pretty dope.
You should try this method wrapping the twine around the stock then hydro dipping the gun
Rubber bands break up the pattern very well around 3 to 4 wraps with coats between wraps
Eric the gun guy!
I'm going to do it but lay down some random brown and green for the base coat then twine it up. Will be better for the high desert of Colorado
That'll turn out great!
I don't want to have taken another step. I would have put a coat of slack on top of it which will give you the more of a glossy look
I like the idea, i have some different ideas for something like this
I tried that with twine, the paint just made painted lines. So I used the sponge technique
I saw some of this paint this morning, I had the same idea for a ramline stock. I figured if I searched youtube I would find someone had already done it... Great video! how is the paint holding up?
It's holding up great. If you prep it well, and let it cure, it really bonds.
What "KIND" of paint please? Enamel? Thanks in advance. Great video!
Matte clear over it all
A reasonable person would understand that you were making this video, so you didn't fuss obsessively over the pattern or color scheme. That being said, I would be more particular how the string crossed itself and the pattern it would create, but I'm that way. You're use of twine makes this very inexpensive. I'd like to try using those net bags that produce is sold in.
I do think the base color should incorporate some slight variation in shade of color for depth and better blending into the environment. Then again many people don't even bother to worry about the color of their firearms. Me, I'm a big fan of woodland and always will be.
Maybe when you finish and are satisfied with the camo and such, you might want to spray the finished stock with a couple of clear coats for protection. And you could choose matte, gloss or semi-gloss paint to achieve the look you want.
Can you do that to my stock but with barbed wire?
That can be done, but I don't recommend wrapping the barbed wire... Lay strips of barbed wire in the pattern you desire then coat each side with drying time in between.
Awesome video! So is rust oleum good for holding well and not chipping? It was also wondering if I needed to apply anything else to help secure the paint or if it would be find on it’s own? Great vid!
In my experience it bonds to plastic and resists chipping really well, especially when allowed to cure. However, everything wears over time. A clear coating over the top of it in matte or gloss, whichever you prefer, will help it last.
@@TheLateBoyScout awesome I really appreciate it
Keeping it simple.
Better than rubber bands.
Let’s see it after you have reassembled it.
I showed the other fully assembled rifle at the beginning. It would have looked very similar to that.
I’ve always wondered since like vehicles firearms are heavily controlled by the US. Gov. are 5here any aesthetic modifications that are unlawful or at least frowned upon…for example I’d imagine ps8nting an orange tip on a firearm would be extremely unlawful but are their any other things you shouldn’t do when it comes to painting it… by camouflaging your rifle you are making it more concealable and thus I would imagine the gov has laws against that considering there being heavy penalties for silencers and sawed off shotguns …basically any attempt to make your weapon more inconspicuous seems to trigger the gov.
Goddamit I can’t edit it…but I want to be clear I don’t think painting your rifle 8n camouflage is unlawful I’m asking if there is any type of paint job that is unlawful just a recap
In case you changed your mind how you will remove the paint job ?
There are some pretty good paint strippers out there, but if you change your mind, a solid-color repaint is probably the cheapest option.
Very nice but you first touch it, always use gloves it does help out.....
Looks more like barbed wire than grass.
1000 yd rifle looks good .
Could you put a clear coat on it to help protect it better?
Definitely. I’d go as flat and non-glossy as possible though.
The Late Boy Scout, thanks for the great information and love the videos keep up the good work!!!
What happened from 3:00 to 13:00 ?
update i found it 😂
It's a good idea to keep your greasy hands off the stock once you've washed it. Especially if you just had KFC
This is the Van Halen method.
Savage axis is good, trigger and stock sucks. Your paint job looks great though
Thank you!
Bring an automotive guy, I see no one using primer when they paint there stock, is there any reason?
I never saw a need. Obviously you can do it, and it will probably end up more durable, but this paint bonds to clean plastics really well without primer. It’s durable enough for me.
@@TheLateBoyScout good to know, I plan on painting the magpul stock I’m getting for my savage
No
rubberbands
My girlfriend is fat and eats McDonald’s. Has nothing to do with ur video I just thought I would share with all u strangers , also I took a dump while watching this
Sorry. But this could have been 2 min.
