- Don't take nothin' at all!
Bob Weir - Guitar, Vocals | Dave Garland - Keyboards, Saxophone, Vocals | Billy Cobham - Drums, Vocals | Bobby Cochran - Guitar,Vocals | Alphonso Johnson - Bass, Vocals
When I first started seeing the Grateful Dead in the early 80s, I became slightly obsessed with what Bob Weir was doing as a rhythm guitarist. There was a lot of clicking and chucking and chiming, harmonics here and there and power chords too. Jerry got the crowd excited but Bob was working his fucking ass off up there. When I saw the Wolf Bros project a couple times last summer, he was still doing it. I turned to my son and said, "If you're wondering what Bob Weir's been doing up there for the last 55 years, this is it." It wasn't obscured by what a bunch of other musicians were doing. The guy is probably one of the most creative guitarists who's ever lived.
Bobby kicks ass , and he carried the band through the mid 80s. Yes he was called Rock Star Bobby , but he earned his way . Shit he carried the band through the 90s as well.
That Dew on Europe 72 is all Bobby. He's a mad genius.
Well said. As a guitar guy myself, you're right.
For about a year I questioned why Bobby was so revered as a guitar player. I never heard him, but that was because I had been SO hyper focused and lasered in on Jerry (or John). Then, I was listening to the Sugar Magnolia from The Closing of Winterland 12/31/78 and all of a sudden I heard him clear has day doing his thing. Clinking and clanging and jangling and it’s so wonderful. I’ve never heard another guitar player like him. God bless the Dead.
And dyslexic at that (can't read sheet music).
I come back to this song once every couple of months and lament the fact it is not on streaming services
It only took me 40 years to hear this… holy shit I’m so glad I finally did.
I think all Bobby fans and most Dead fans are happy with the awesome professional level of performance with the players of Bobby and the Midnights.
that was a fan freaking tastic solo
So glad he covers a Lowell George song.
Thank you, Lowell George!
Dear Ol' Dad
Right on Forrest!
Rip Paul Barerre
Written by the great Lowell George!!
I didn't know that! Wow!
Simply one of the best videos on CZcams. Great cover, great band. Bobby fans are people, too!
One of my favorite live performance videos of all time...
Hey now
Can you answer my comment
Billy Cobham is by far the best drummer i've ever seen in my lifetime. There is no second place
Well, ya, if you only saw one that makes sense.
maybe Buddy Rich
Shit yeah
OK.. that solo was absolutely SICK!!!!
Dak TirQue You could not be more correct.
+Dak TirQue I think that every time I hear it. Then after that fantastic solo he just goes back to singing like nothing happened.
randall scott burress yes. It happens to everyone. But theres more. Its not gone forever.
Are you a player or just a critic?
Fuck you, Troll!
Everytime I watch this, I get a chill right down my spine, and a tear or two drop. So beautiful. And then...You get to see the absolute JOY in playing music from Bobby Cochran! What a treat this is. I watch this at least once a year to remind me of what it's all about.
See you soon?
Such an amazing jam......I wish I wasn't 6 when this was filmed.....seen Bobby dozens of times in my life but this is a special song.......hits hard and is still very relevant in weird world we live in today.
So much better than little feat original
That's why you gotta hit every show. Ya never know...
I saw this show at Club Casino in Hampton Beach New Hamster. That's a few hundred miles North by Northeast of New Gerbil. Max Creek opened the show. Then we drove all night to get to Camp Creek in Richmond Maine. Labor Day Weekend Max Creek on the farm. 1983.
Bobby Cochran is a shredder
He was MEANT to play that solo. 🙏👍💙✌
This is so Godamn good , been on repeat constantly Cobham crushing it
The dynamic control that this group had is absolutely amazing. This was played as if telling a story. Set it up, build it up, climax, recovery and epilogue. Wonderful
Rt Carolina I am very impressed by that line-up. As someone who likes jazz as well as anything Grateful Dead related, I would count Cochran, Johnson, Cobham, and Garland as one of the best jazz combo line ups ever!
Jim Grady Well said Jim. We seem to be like minded, check out our channel if you have a minute. I would love to have a subscriber who is also a Deadhead, I need the reinforcement. Thanks, "Rt"
Rt Carolina subscribed
Man, Billy back there. Amazing.
Bobby and the Midnites Reunion 2024
bobby is in his prime! such great vocals.
40 years ago sounds so good.
Well, I just had to watch this a couple of times after watching the I want to live in America music video! I do feel better now, hehe!
(~)}:}
What a stunning Bobby version of a perfect Little Feat song. WOW! Thank you for sharing!
Squiggy Wigginz you couldn’t have said it any better
Bobby in his prime love these lyrics so relevent to todays world
Lowell George wrote this song
Saw them live in 1982 in Dallas. Best group that Weir assembled, and Bobby Cochrane may be the most underrated guitar player ever. Watch Alphonso's head when Bobby starts riffing and Billy Cobham is the very best.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALPHONSO JOHNSON!
Amazing the reverence the crowd has for the musicians
3:05 a perfect shot of Billy's triple bass triple snare Tama kit with custom paint... AWESOMENESS
Monster!!!!!!
Listening to this brings tears to my eyes for all my friends who died suddenly...
Bob's best ensemble ever. Seriously. Billy Cobham? Al Johnson? And Bobby Cochran's bluesy leads are insanely good! This should be re-released (internally by GD if necessary)...
Yes.. I made a comment can you answer it
can't stop watching it either....it's so easy to slip...........so easy to faaaallllll......
How fricken great is this?! best Feat cover ever I reckon...
Feat, for sure.
Seems like some have had the “Black/White” “thing” solved for years.
Bobby Cochran!!!
Bobby's version of the Jerry Garcia Band. His own Amazing side project!
What an Incredible ensemble of musicians! God Damn Billy Cobham!
All-star rhythm section !!!!
This is my favorite thing ever. Especially the giddy up guitar solo.
Ya it might be the greatest guitar solo of all time... History of humanity
It was wonderful picking myself and my girlfriend out in the 7th row on the aisle. A WONDERFUL show definitely!!
I saw them a few times, and they were fantastic! Bobby Cochran is an amazing guitar player! Throw in Billy and Alphonso and you've got a supergroup. And no, that's not Brent, it's Dave Garland.
didn't they meet Brent through side projects though?
@@joshuajohnson8991 yes, Brent was in Bobby's side band Kingfish in late 70s and was brought in after Keith and Donna's departure, late 1979.
That might be the best guitar solo I have ever seen. Man he just lets it go and smokes it!!
That might be the best guitar solo ive ever heard in my entire life
Man, l totally agree,... Just an absolute work of art !!
Does it with ease too!
So different than the Little Feat original 1972 studio version. Nice!
I think there are some songs Bobby "gets", a personal thing, This is one that is amazing. I also love to hear him play Stuck Outside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again. Looking for to 2016 Ratdog
Bob is so under-rated.
gotta love all the Peavey gear on stage :)
One of my fav songs and top it off with how fantastic Bobby always looks in his periwinkle blue shirt makes this even more Heavenly.
Bobby Weir, Lowell George, same song, so different, so similarly perfect.
I agree. Ive easily watched this over 25 times in a few years. It really is a very solid version.
Listen too those drums and bass. This is one heck of a supergroup.
What an amazing performance. If i dont go back to it every once and awhile i wonder if it exists at all
I know he's old now, but darn. This makes me want to be a 60s 70s chick
You've got good taste in men. (And music, evidently.)
Not his Song..
Its Lowell you want lol
I know he’s old now, but darn. This makes me want to be a 60s 70s or 80s chick. And I’m a DUDE!
It was freakin great be a 5een in the 70's to catch a smile at cha
I love the original Feat version but in some ways I like this more. Bobby and the band seem to put more into it here.Always liked Bobby's singing since I saw the Dead back 100 years ago. ;)
Bobby is awesome and is carrying the torch
Cant imagine the Dead without our beloved Bobby
What a great ensemble this was. So lucky to have seen them
SO awesome. thanks for posting, rhis is a beacon !! so good thanks bob weir and thanks midnites and thanks for all who keep this alive
This is a Little Feat song and this crowd must be on tranquilizers
truth!
"Ludes man, ludes"
One can't dance when one can barley see. Although I remember being only able to dance and compliment the world on it's new tie dye.
Little Feat and Lowell thanks❤️
So many comments...none about Lowell...😊
I did❤😊
Music was never this good again, glad to have enjoyed it 😊
I’ve got a smile just as big as his during that solo!! What a heater!!
Love the guitar riff at 4:09 !!!
Bill in the best shape of his life. Shoulders and Boulders man !
I ❤️ this. This was an amazing set. I bought it when it came out on vhs (& promoptly taken off the market a week later after the Dead’s lawyer sent a cease & desist) . IMO the biggest highlight of this excellent set was “Bahamas Mama” an instrumental which was a showcase for Alphonso Johnson.
I love this set too lol. That BM is great but this one hits emotionally for me. Bahama is just fun!✌
OMG I remember...THANK YOU FOR Postsing THIS..
Last night 9-10-2012 I saw Bobby do this again ,AT the TOWER in Philly it was acoustic but in The 80'S i WOULD see him play in cali At the Country Club in Reseda Cali or the Golden Bear in Hunington Beach...Bobby such mad love for you..
I love how Bobby Cochran just takes completely over and lays down the shred of his life!
Wow.

Smoking hot. On time. Whole wheat shreddies indeed!

Bobby Cochran would be good with the Boys in Furthur!!! I'd love to see that!! GD Forever!!

Came back for more....This song is so meaningful, so well played. Get goosebumps down my spine at about 4:30 on
Fabulous collection of musicians.
Thanks for posting this. I was lucky enough to see Bobby and the Midnites at Sheffield Dingwalls in England - fortunately got suspended from school which meant I was free to travel the 60 miles to the gig. Unforgettable
What year was that? It is the same tour we did Lugano Switzerland, and Paris, also.
Hi Bobby....is it really you? It must have been 1983. Such a fantastic gig. @@bobbycochran8427

Great cover
Wow, wonderful! I didn’t know that Ron Santo could play like that.
This is one of my favorite songs!! You Bobby!!
Awesome.
Billy Cobham!
Man Bobby's one off bands were some of the best
This is such an awesome band.
Keeping the thread alive... AMAZING!
This is the real Bobby and the Midnites I saw live in 81, not the brainwashed MTV imposters that recorded that horrific Living In America video. I'd like to hear Bobby explain how that debacle came about. Alphonso Johnson was a kickass bass player who laid down a solo at the show I saw that earned him a high five from Bobby. You can see and hear his greatness on this song alone.
"Living In America" was their version of "We Built This City".
retrospect...I dig bobby! A great artist..!!
Thx! Senor'
Bobby is beautiful!
Holy crap Ola. Amazing.
